Discussion Clark Griswold from the Vacation movies is a terrible driver.

I’ve been watching the vacation movies, especially Christmas Vacation, for over a decade at this point. One of the most obvious things about Clark, the main character, is that he’s a horrible driver. In Vacation, he let the Ferrari lady distract him and he then later went off the road. Later in the movie, he drives the Wagon Queen Family Truckster through a road closed sign and flies off the road with his kids inside. In European vacation, he keeps driving on the right side of the road even though you’re supposed to drive on the left side in England. In Christmas Vacation, after getting into a car chase, he gets stuck under the logging truck and once he gets out manages to once again make his car fly, this time into a Christmas tree lot. In Vegas Vacation in the opening, he keeps going onto the curb while looking at a pamphlet and almost hits some kids on the street. I’m sure there’s many more instances of him being a terrible driver, but these are some I can remember. Honestly I think his drivers license should’ve been revoked long ago.

Discussion The disappearance of movies that quietly teach life lessons.

Movies like Forrest Gump, Office Space, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, and The Truman Show were entertaining first, but they also left many people thinking differently about work, success, relationships, purpose, and life in general.

Some of these films are still shown in schools, universities, and professional settings because the lessons feel relevant long after the credits roll.

Maybe they still exist and I am just missing them, but it feels like we see fewer mainstream movies today that become part of these conversations.

What recent movies do you think will still be teaching people important life lessons 20 years from now?

Thank you.

Discussion Opening Wedding Scene for the Godfather and Opening Communion Party for Godfather Part 2

I love both movies but I always find myself wondering what if it rained. I know it is fake but to schedule both events like they did and assume no rain is crazy. Especially when you can see that tents were not even feasible given the vast landscape. I just wonder if anyone else ever thought this when watching.

Question Heroine VS Heroine or Villainess VS Villainess

There have been many Hero VS Villain movies. Rather more rare are characters of the same alignment clashing... but it has happened with male characters: Batman VS Superman an obvious example of two heroes colliding, Freddy VS Jason an example of two villains battling.

But what about female characters?

Any movies about Good VS Good female characters? What about Evil VS Evil women?

(You may include TV shows too)

Discussion Movies where the heroes insisted on doing it the hard way?

Years ago I was at a party and they had the movie Battleship on. Not exactly the best in quality cinema, but if you fast forward to the end it's worth it. One of the people at the party served on the Iowa back in '91. And proceeded to tell us exactly the capabilities of the battleship on screen and how there was no reason for them to close to point blank range against an enemy vessel that had a comically short range on its primary batteries, as the battleship was more than capable of shooting things over the horizon. Or the island. They could have sank the alien ship without getting unmoored.

Which led me to ask a question what other movies did the heroes do everything the hard way even if for the rule of cool? Where there was a much simpler solution to the problem facing them and they chose to ignore it or completely forgot it was an option.

Media Website that suggests movies and allows groups to decide on one

Sometimes I am with my wife and we take 45min just to decide on a movie, or I am with family or friends and its a real struggle to find a movie we all want to see.

I started using a website called movieswiper.app which suggests movies you can swipe left or right tinder style. You can create a group and invite other people to see what movies you all are interested in

Its completely free, there is no signup or ads.
I am posting this because I feel like this could serve some people here.

Discussion Gail Daightry and the Celebrity Sex Pass

I saw this twice (last week and this previous wednesday). I miss seeing really dumb movies in the theaters. It is such an easy premise, but the characters shine through. I love the banter between everyone and it is erroneous. The movie isn't taking itself seriously, so why should we? I'm calling it is going to be a cult classic

Question Are there any cases of movie soundtracks being reused either in other movies or TV shows?

I remember seeing some film footage of Duel showing up in an episode of the Incredible Hulk. Has anything like this happened with a film soundtrack?

Sometimes a soundtrack can sound generic to the point that it feels like you've heard it before, but have we actually heard it before?

Note: asking about original compositions, not songs that may appear in a number of films.

Discussion Lee kronins Mummy

I gave it a chance because everyone hated undertone and i liked undertone a lot. This movie was absolutely awful. Blumhouse managed to make another film that just comes off as another commercial horror film taking influence from monumental films and missing everything that made those films influential. I have no praises for a single moment in this 2 hour slog. Even intense moments that could have given some sense of dread are filled with cuts every 3 seconds showing me some stupid face of the lead actors. They did not understand how to create dread with the camerawork at all. 1/10

Discussion I don't understand the Nicolas Cage movie, "The Surfer"

I can't tell if this movie is meant to be a fever dream. The surfer gang (?) on the beach harass Nicolas Cage throughout the whole movie, making him think he's a homeless bum, and generally treat him like dirt. At first you think it's only Nicolas Cages' character they're doing this too, but late on we see a couple from France come to the beach and Nic Cage warns them about some local hostility. We then see the male punched in the nose and the French couple is harrassed the same way, and we see them leave by car later.

So why was this group allowed to harass anyone at this beach, destroy their cars and beat people up? Even the police guy we see in the movie wasn't arresting these people.

Nic believes he is the bum, but then we see the homeless bum in the movie (who shoots the guy in the head when he's kneeling at the end on the beach), so are we to believe Nic Cage and the homeless guy are one and the same? Or the homeless guy actually IS Nic Cage and that's his current self (a bum living there for 40+ years?) while Nic is in his current form thinking about his past?

The more I think about this movie, none of it makes sense at all.

Discussion Something I thought only happened in movies until it happened to me

Movies are full of moments that seem unrealistic until they happen in real life.

For me, one example is from Home Alone.

As a kid, accidentally getting left behind felt like a movie only situation. Then one day my family drove off from a rest stop before realizing I was not in the car.

Thankfully, they came back a few minutes later.

What is something you thought only happened in movies until it happened to you?

Question In Titanic, from the moment the lookout rings the iceberg alert bell, it seems like the rest of the crew are slow to respond to the bell. Did James Cameron intend to pace it that way?

Seconds count in a situation like this, and I always had the impression that, in this movie, the crew respond to the bell a half-step too slow. First, we see the lookout pissed off that no one's immediately answering the phone, then we cut to a guy who strides to the answer the phone, but not so fast as to risk spilling the cup of tea in hand. Then there's a few seconds of back-and-forth which seem hardly different from a "hi how are you" moment and whose pacing is excruciating to watch. Finally, receiving guy hangs up and starts to hustle in a meaningful way.

If this was intentional on Cameron's part, bravo to him because it really amps up the seriousness of the delay. Who knows, five fewer seconds to respond might have made all the difference.

News Ava DuVernay & Netflix Reteam For Constitutional Documentary ‘14th’

A decade after Ava DuVernay‘s Oscar-nominated and Peabody Award-winning 13th debuted on Netflix, the filmmaker and the streamer are back together in the Constitutional business.

Spotlighting America’s long running and sometimes bloody battle with itself over who is a citizen and how much freedom they get, DuVernay’s documentary 14th is set to launch on Netflix later this year, I’ve learned.

“If 13th asked who gets caged, then 14th asks who gets counted,” DuVernay told Deadline of the upcoming documentary. “This is not a film about the past tense of freedom. I’m not interested in asking you to look back.”

Discussion How immersed do you get into the world of a movie while watching it?

Everyone in my life thinks it’s weird how immersed I get into movies

I just watched “Obsession” in theatre and I had to repeatedly pinch myself, look around and remind myself that I’m not living the the world this movie inhabits

And I wasn’t really back to “normal” until like the next day, it was just such an intense, jarring experience that I was kind of destroyed

I mean, I was practically pulling my hair out from stress the first time I watched “The Pursuit of Happyness”

If anything it’s made me enjoy movies less since sometimes I just want to watch something new without it being an emotional, “real” experience

I’ve never cried at a movie, but Ive definitely felt really terrible after watching one because my body seemingly internalizes whatever happens on screen

Anyone else relate to this or am I just crazy? lol
