Matt Damon, Samantha Morton, and John Leguizamo are the only performances in The Odyssey that deserve to be seriously considered for an Oscar nomination, and maybe even a win.

Having finished seeing The Odyssey, Matt Damon and Samantha Morton deserve to nominated. Everyone else, not so much.

I thought Tom Holland was out of his depht. Anne Hathaway was good but Penelope is painfully underwritten, she's only in the movie for the first and final act (forget a Lead nom). Robert Pattinson does a good job as the amoraL Antinous but he never got a big scene. John Leguizamo is good but I kept expecting him to crack a joke. Charlize Theron, Zendaya and Lupita are given nothing to do. Elliot Page is excellent in his one big moment with Odysseus in what seems to be the Otherworld. But he's given very little to do.

For me, Matt Damon and Samantha Morton are the best ones to compete. Damon leads this story with nobility and strength, I was impressed by Damon's range and it's his best work since Ripley. It's also the first time I feel Damon embodied his real age instead of the usual boyish stuff.

Samantha Morton's role isn't as small as critics are saying. Her whole arc is self-cointained and she dominates it. She's terrifying, tragic and wise. The scene where Circe transforms the soldiers into pigs is unbelievable and Morton's monologue transfixing. She's in the movie for 10 minutes but you never forget about her and she's definitely the MVP.

Discussion Which actor could you randomly see winning three Oscars?

Post image

I’m not talking about Cate Blanchett, Emma Stone, or Denzel, but rather actors who only have one—you see them working on projects that help them achieve that.

Penélope Cruz is an incredible actress; she has already won an award for *Vicky Cristina Barcelona* and has also secured two wins for *Volver* and *Parallel Mothers*. She has such an extensive body of work that I wouldn't be surprised if, in the future, she wins another award for Best Supporting Actress and another for Best Actress.

I just watched Weapons for the 1st time. Does anybody think it deserved more nominations besides Best Supporting Actress for Amy Madigan?

I 100% agree Amy Madigan deserved to win. She absolutely deserves to keep her win and nomination but honestly I also wish it had been nominated for Best Actor for Josh Brolin, Best Actress for Julia Garner, Best Supporting Actor for Cary Christopher (I still believe Sean Penn deserved to win for One Battle After Another but I still believe he should've recieved a nomination), Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score

I was watching Creed. I been a huge Rocky Fan. Sylvester Stallone should’ve won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars in 2016. I would give him an Oscar if I was a Voter. He gave an incredible performance in Creed as Old Rocky Balboa. He only won Golden Globes and Critics Choice. He should‘ve won. He deserves it.

For me, i think I'd pick Olivier, because he *did* also win Best Picture. I may have forgotten or missed one, but i think these are all of the films where the director/actor won one of the respective awards and was nominated for the other.

1948: Hamlet Olivier- **Actor** Director

1977: Annie Hall- Actor **Director**

1982: Reds- Actor **Director**

1990: Dances with Wolves- Actor **Director**

1992: Unforgiven- Actor **Director**

1998: Life is Beautiful- **Actor** Director

2004: Million Dollar Baby- Actor **Director**

Discussion You've now been ordered to do a (near) complete overhaul of the 2010s Best Supporting Actress wins. What does your new Best Supporting Actress lineup of that decade look like?

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

Now it's time to redo the Supporting Actress lineup of the 2010s.

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE YOU COMMENT YOUR NEW LINEUPS:

Two of the rules are the same as always, but for the supporting lineups I'm modifying the first rule:

  1. You can leave ONE winner of the decade unchanged, because I feel like the supporting lineups generally have fewer duds/outright bad choices than the lead lineups. You don't have to, you can overhaul the whole decade if you want, but know that you do have the option to leave one as is. If you choose to leave one winner as is, though, choose wisely. The other nine wins, even the ones you like as is, must be changed.
  2. For the other nine winners you're changing, or all ten, you have to STICK TO THE NOMINEES from those years, so I'm afraid that means no Mila Kunis in Black Swan or Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers.
  3. Ties are allowed, but try to use them sparingly.

With those three rules in mind, picking up where you left off in your alternate timelines with your new 90s, 2000s and 2010s Best Actor winners, your new 90s, 2000s and 2010s Best Actress winners, and your new 90s, 2000s and 2010s Best Supporting Actor winners, and your new 90s and 2000s Best Supporting Actress winners, what does your new 2010s Best Supporting Actress lineup look like?

Here's mine:

  1. Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech (2010)
  2. Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids (2011)
  3. Helen Hunt, The Sessions (2012)
  4. I'm keeping Lupita Nyong'o in 12 Years a Slave (2013)
  5. Emma Stone, Birdman (2014)
  6. Rachel McAdams, Spotlight (2015)
  7. Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea (2016)
  8. Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird (2017)
  9. Rachel Weisz, The Favourite (2018)
  10. Florence Pugh, Little Women (2019)

Samantha Morton is a better candidate for Best Supporting Actress than Anne Hathaway

Hathaway is given very little to do. It's a small part with two great moments. Morton's part is also small but it's self contained so you get a better showcase and Morton is fantastic.

Which version of a film gets submitted to the Academy for awards consideration?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Big event movies like The Odyssey are sometimes released in different formats like IMAX, 70mm IMAX, and so on and so forth.

Do the filmmakers pick a version for the Academy to consider? Could the cinematography look better in one version but the editing seems better in another?

I know many voters see quite a few of the nominees at home on screeners and there are already grumbles about how that affects their ability to judge BIG movies.
