Advice I really want a cat but my boyfriend doesn’t think I’m responsible enough. What should I do?
I finally convinced him to let me do a trial period with his beautiful baby. And it took a lot of convincing for that to happen as he was so against cats. The cat loves him more than me (of course) and he will play with the cat and the cat to play with him. I vacuum every day, have a nice e litter, and use the oder sprays. I try everything in the book to combat the cat hair ! Even with all the effort that he sees me putting in he still says “Oh we’re gonna give him back at the end of the week, right?” He works long hours and I’m home alone a lot which is why I would want a cute furry friend.
(Edit) - I didn’t really expect this post go off as much as it did! I barely have anyone comment on anything I post lol.
-I have a full time well paying job
-I used to have dogs my whole life, the oldest one lived till 21
-I used natural cat safe cleaning stuff
-Yes I have saving on my own end
- I’m not 21 (so please stop dming me asking if I’m in collage with a 35yrs bum bf)
-Sorry if I phased it weird, English isn’t my first language
- I hate the term “ trial period “ because the organization found him from makes everyone do it to make sure they are a good fit. No I didn’t adopt him.

. BIG UPDATE!
Wow, thank you to everyone who gave thoughtful and helpful responses. I just want to address a few things.
First, to the people criticizing my writing: you stink 😂 I speak multiple languages, and I honestly did not think I needed to put that much effort into a Reddit post. Lesson learned!
Second, to everyone telling me to leave my partner: I was honestly very upset because I already love this cat so much. However, my partner apologized and explained that he did not mean for it to come across the way it did. His concern was more that we now have “big people money” and may want to travel occasionally.
We are not constant world travelers. We go back to Europe from time to time and may take an occasional fun trip. Once I explained that I have friends and colleagues who would happily stay at our place and care for the cat, he understood. He has never had a pet before, so he genuinely did not understand how these things usually work.
He has actually fallen in love with the cat too.
Unfortunately, I have noticed a few behaviors that concerned me, so the sanctuary I adopted him from is taking him this weekend to a foster home with other cats. They want to see whether he needs a feline companion or whether he truly prefers being a solo cat, as I was originally told.
I am completely supportive of this because I want what is best for him. I told the sanctuary that if he truly prefers being an only cat, I will happily take him back. If he clearly needs another cat friend, I would honestly consider adopting a second cat.
To everyone who gave me cleaning and litter advice: thank you so much. It genuinely helped, especially switching to a different type of litter.
To the people asking why I went to the internet for advice: people ask questions online every day. That is literally what Reddit is for.
To those saying I am in a toxic relationship: my partner and I go to couples therapy, communicate openly, and work through disagreements. I think we are going to be okay 😂
My partner also has sinus issues, which contributed to some of his concerns.
And no, I am not treating the cat like an accessory. I understand that a pet is a lifelong responsibility and a living creature. I actually hate calling this a “trial.” However, the sanctuary uses this process to identify potential behavioral, medical, or compatibility issues before finalizing an adoption.
I truly love this baby. I spoil him way too much and have already spent an unreasonable amount of money on him.
And for everyone asking his name:
Żabka Hotdog Max!
Finally, thank you to everyone who understood that bringing a pet into a shared home is ultimately something both partners need to agree on.
