Dude naw, steam deck is the reason why I keep gaming. Hand held so I can game while the wife watches whatever. Sleep mode will pause your game and most games you can jump back in without restarting.
After adulting and losing the ability to play my PS4 (wife wants to watch shows together, no TV access)I thought I would be limited to phone games forever until I got my deck.

I think its cause your brain is trying to process how to completely satisfy the gaming urge all before bedtime so you're battling which games is worth putting in the 1-2hrs before bed

u/Valkinpunch 18h ago
I genuinely don’t even game during work weeks because there just isn’t enough time before I have to go to bed and be miserable at work the next day. I just tend to watch YouTube or a random show until I’m tired.

u/spicysenpai6 18h ago
I feel this. It makes it more enjoyable to play on weekends
6
u/BryLoW 13h ago
Agreed. Not trying to rush progress makes that game time so much more impactful. I find I end up worrying less if I drop a game too because it doesn't feel as much like wasted time. It was more "I tried this game during my free time and it wasn't my thing" vs "I have to get some gaming done now because it's my free time."

Games like Fortnite, Phasmo, Repo or smaller games kinda fit that time frame.
It's the longer games like Cyberpunk, Skyrim, RDR2 or Assassin's Creed that really makes it hard.

u/Icky_Thump1 18h ago
I recently got back into CS2, after having not touched it since shortly after CS:GO came out (2012). I didnt think at 37 i had the hand eye coordination anymore, but i've surprised myself. It's been a great quick fire in and out kinda game to scratch that itch. Super fast loading into matches. I dont play the classic modes, just Deathmatch and Arms Race.
3
u/DumberThanIThink 17h ago
Did you ever play competitive on CS:GO? How does your experience compare now? I used to be a MG2 or so level player mostly playing Mirage, Dust 2, and Inferno but stopped playing once Valve cracked down on the skin betting/gambling markets. Haven’t tried CS2 at all.

u/RoyalShine 17h ago
Played live service games in the past but focus on single player now
Those games fit the time frame but also change how you approach a game and can ruin your mindset about single player games, not to mention are way more financially predatory and built around FOMO and microtransactions, and one day will be taken from you unless it's a behemoth like World of Warcraft, Runescape, etc (and even still...)
Once I stopped playing games like League/Overwatch/etc and only did single player games, and most importantly chose to remember that these games should be treated as art and experienced, not consumed...you grow from experiences that single player games give you.
I understand some people only play socially with friends and have limited time, and that's fair. No judgement from me. I can only explain my own feelings. Comparing something like going through the Yakuza series, or the Persona/SMT games, or the Danganronpa games, or The Silent Hill games (specifically 2, goddamn) and comparing that to League? I just prefer expanding my horizons and experiencing new stories with a clear start and finish, over sweating and either having my interest fizzle out or have the devs ruin my game with a bad patch. It's rather depressing thinking about it that way but that's just the way it is.

Tbh Cyberpunk isn't really that long, I did damn near every side quest in the game that wasn't a collectathon and my playthrough clocked in at 30 hours. Had the final mission of the main story available in like 12-15.
7
u/Grasher312 18h ago
Kinda like that. For me it's thoughts like "Wait I gotta do this. And then this. Could probably also do this. Wait what should I do, this or this?"
And all of this processing while the game is loading puts me off until a day when I'm entirely free, no one is bothering me, and I can forgive myself for wasting up to 8 hours just dysoning the entire map for content.
It's why I started playing Rogue-Likes. It's the closest thing to online session games without actually going into that sad rabbit hole. An hour's worth entertainment without any consequences and obligations.
Ngl that sounds kinda sad too.

I think its being a bit done with games. I rarely have the urge for it anymore - Not because playing games is not okey, just other stuff is nicer. Even reading some article often feels more fullfilling than gaming. I waited for silksong for so long and have it on my pc, played a few bosses and just didnt play much more.
Last game I was hooked on was bitburner though, where the game is programming javascript so I guess my brain often craves either more stimulating games or more relaxed activities like reading or seeing a tv show.
I still love games though and currently Im waiting for the new amanita design game to hit some dirt cheap price. Its like I cant be bothered to spend money on games anymore.
Bitburner is also free btw

u/SwoopzB 18h ago
Yup. I usually spend ~3 hours/ night gaming with my partner during the week (no kids).
We have 2 distinct ways to utilize that time.
Either play 2 different, short form games for about an hour an a half (shooters, roguelites, etc)
Or
One long form game (survival/ craft, factory games etc)
We opt for option 1 most of the time, because it feels like we did more while the evening moves slower playing in 15-30 minute chunks.
Option 2 games usually gobble up those 3 hours pretty quick and before we know it, it’s 11:30 pm. We dub this “getting lost in the sauce” and try to save it for the weekends. Unless we are really hooked on something. Like we currently are on Satisfactory 😫

For me its just staying consistent with what your playing. Dont play more than 1 or 2 and dont debate it just start it when I have time.
If you start it and decide you dont feel like playing than sleep would be more productive or do something else entirely. Debating in your mind which game you might want to play is just a waste of time.

Literally me last night. Open warhammer total war, cycle through some factions to start a new campaign, alt+F4...open crusader kings and explore the map looking for a fun start...alt+F4, check steam for anything new, nothing interesting, go to bed.
2
u/Jaegernaut- 16h ago
Warhammer: TW is probably my all time favorite game to go back to, but with 1790 hours played across all 3 games, there is a limit on how much I can really enjoy it anymore.
How many campaigns can you play before you've seen every permutation and scenario you care about? How many times can you play your favorite factions/lords before they become hopelessly repetitive and boring?
I keep it installed even when not actively playing a campaign, so I can go back now and then to thumb through the faction selector and maybe start a new game. 9/10 of these "visits" end with me closing the game and not playing anything.
Sometimes thinking about playing the game is more fun than actually playing it.

not necessarily. I haven’t played video games consistently in years now, and as much as I want to, I really struggle to sit down and actually DO it. for me, I believe it is executive dysfunction issues probably related to ADHD.
5
u/Wufje 16h ago
Very recognisable. Medication helped me get that spark back, but before medication and with diagnosis, what helped me was saying to myself:
"just play for 30 seconds to see if you feel like it" and then try another game.
Most of the time I could really enjoy the game for at least an hour. Hardest part was actually starting it and doing something. If not, I asked myself what I really needed. Usually it meant an overstimulation from everything (repeated every 3 to 5 weeks). I shut it down and went to do nothing for a while. Some chores or whatever that I needed to do for 2 weeks already. Do that for one or two days and I was fine again. No podcasts during that time. That one took me a long time to figure out.
Trying to figure out the balance like everyone else. In the mean time, hope this helps somebody.
3
u/NeutralKuchiKopi 16h ago
I saw a Youtube video mentioning this method a couple years ago and it changed a lot for me. You don't have to commit to anything, and wasting 30 minutes wondering what you'll play is worse than "wasting" 30 minutes playing 3 different titles and deciding they aren't what you want to play right now. No harm was done but at least you DID SOMETHING with your time.

Yep I'm diagnosed but it's much worse now than before. I might have much higher standards for games and what I find enjoyable tho.
And mental fatigue can be a pain.
Too tired in the head to play games, especially if they require decisions or inventory management instead of just going autopilot.Edit: bc I see this type of thread over and over, I will say that ppl ALWAYS generalize that "it must be depression".
There are so many possibilities. One of them is indeed ADhD, but also more. And I hate to admit it but ofc it can in many cases be true that today's social media and constant dopamine could play a role. In theory.
Personally I have become a perfectionist compltionist while also being too tired to play.
Black Flag was super fun on day one but now it's just another chore where I play to kill time and do what the objectives and map says.
No hate, just how it felt on day 3 - maybe it's more my mood tho, and/or maybe I played too much.Still, gamers staring at their library without anything feeling like worth the time or tempting is real. And it kinda sucks.
I'll end my rant by saying I miss the gamer I was before I learned so much about quality in games and performance.
After having my standards raised to the sky, it sucks playing so many games that don't have the same dedication.→ More replies (1)3

from life or gaming? Because this happens to me often but I'm also constantly sleep deprived. I want to play the games but because of the lack of sleep I just can't gather the mental energy to really get into something. Other times I want to play something but I don't have the several hours to accomplish a section of a game I'm playing without leaving it halfway in the middle, which I don't like to do.

u/LiquidDiviums 17h ago
Also, video games should be an activity that helps you relax, enjoy, and disconnect from your daily activities. Video games are supposed to be fun.
Try to treat video games as a hobby and (if needed) build a ritual around them. That way, you can associate the activity with something that you enjoy and that it’s for yourself.
If video games feel daunting, overwhelming, and you can’t withstand more than 15 minutes, you might need a break.

Yeah I honestly can't relate to the experience of booting up a game, staring at the title screen, then turning it off. If I start up a game it's cause I'm in the mood to play games. And if I'm not then I'm doing other stuff.
I feel like you only really hit this point if video games are basically the only thing/interest going on in your life is that, so your habitual routine becomes work, video games, sleep, repeat.

When wow came out in 2004 I joined my IRL friends group to go to BFD.
I sucked at the game and I realized why, because I’d only play for 2-3 hours at a time.
My friends walked me all the way to BFD from Org and dude it was like “are we there yet?”
From me sitting down to the START of BFD it was maybe 90 minutes. I remember thinking “who the fuck sits around and enjoys this shit?”
Now eventually I got sucked in but it took years of blizzard breaking me down. Looking back at some of their classic vanilla choices it was really grimy how they dragged people’s time away from them just to get a subscription fee extension.
If you want to feel great one day go to prison for a month, I bet you feel like a billion dollars on the day you’re released….doesnt make it all worth it though does it?

The engaging with something new part is what gets me. I have 10-15 games that I just cycle through and keep replaying because I know I enjoy the games. When I think about getting a new game my thought process goes as follows:
- I should get a new game
- But then I have to learn said new game
- What if I don't like the new game
- Then I've wasted money on something I won't Use
- You could refund it
- No way I'm going to be able to buy a game and immediately play enough to know if I want to refund while the window is open
- Even more importantly, it's the time wasted more than the money
- Sigh
- I'll just play Mass Effect again

I'm born in the 80's and have kids. I don't recognise at all. I play no more than three games at the same time. When I finish one, I pick up another one in my huge backlog. I always finish them. It's a passion.
3
u/TheRageful 10h ago
Yup, my solution too. Stick with a game and beat it.
I also used to idle, watch videos, doomscroll, launch and quit the same three games. I've realized that if gaming is a hobby of mine, I have to be willing to put in effort to engage with it. So I make the effort, nearly every day. Sometimes it's hard at first, but once I am in the swing of things I am much happier for it.
I have probably completed more games in the past few years than my entire childhood at this point and I am having a great time.

The closest I've come to this is just the pure paralysis of having too many options and no game feeling "right."
Granted, that's happened to me on and off since I was 20.
I've honestly been doing better in playing my backlog since turning 38, because I feel like I got a better sense of what game genres I should play when I'm in what moods, something I wasn't in tune with before.
Like if I've been REALLY stressed I need something a little brainless and creative (minecraft creative mode)
If I'm really high energy, and I'm worried about falling asleep, I actually go for intense action (think, Devil May Cry games) which help drain my energy.
If I know I have an hour or two, I download a campaign for Left 4 Dead 2 I've never played before. (The longest I think I've ever found was 2.5 hours, but they're usually around an hour)

I make a list of games I'm currently playing or want to play. I most play stuff before the PS3 era, mostly NES, PS1, GBA, Gameboy.

Gotta fight against the waiting mode for a few hours before you actually boot something up and don't draw any satisfaction from it because you wasted almost all of the time you could've spent playing

Take a break, start watching game trailers build interest for new titles and play when ready.

Same dead tired from work.
Manage to get into the game menu
Stare at menu then log off and sleep
Edit: Feels all I do is work and sleep

I've found that having the least amount of games installed at the same time helps a lot with this

I have definitely done that, only because I am too tired to game, but refuse to admit it.
