I had a 180 lbs long haired Saint Bernard once. I could brush his coat to shed his fur, and I'd be able to fill two large shopping bags just with fur - and then my wife would still question whether or not his coat had been done at all.
I love animals but I can’t imagine owning a huge dog and keeping it inside given all the fur. I struggle with my small dog and cat because of all the fur. It’s really a lot.
For Saint Bernards it's mostly seasonal. Mine slept outside on the snow most winter, as his winter coat was so thick that he'd overheat if he didn't.
In the late winter when the snow started to melt, he'd eventually end up curling up on the last spot of snow - usually where we'd piled up the snow or had a snowman.
Then in spring he'd dump that big coat over a couple weeks in giant wool-like fluffy lumps.
Or... a whole new carpet! I reckon if you walk on it long enough while it accumulates, it may start to felt. Give it a year, and you can just pull off the new carpet.
My mom had a Shiba Inu and while she loved him, she absolutely hated having to clean up his fur all the time. She got hardwood floors in her new home but ended up having to vacuum even more because the fur would just float around on the floor. And the dog hated the vacuum cleaner and would always try to attack it whenever she vacuumed.
We have 3 dogs so lots of dog hair. The one that sheds the most is named Finn. I tell my wife how much hair I swept in units of Finns. “I swept up two Finns today”

Enough hair to make a whole new pet. Cat or dog, either one.
