Brooo! Ima barber and this is insane. Use the damn trimmers. Never return to this barber. Ever.

1.6k

u/Wildtails Jun 17 '26

With the scissors even not a straight razor, at least there could be some mild excuse with how quickly a nick can turn into a cut, ive never cut a client like that šŸ™ƒ

1.2k

u/SimUnit Jun 17 '26

I've never cut a client like that either! I am an accountant, however.

Budget cut. Mentally more devastating.

Right you can tell the barber was behind the right shoulder using a downward angle with the scissors. If they had been even 1/4ā€ inward he coulda lost the whole side of the lip.

BTW. Sorry OP.

u/alexs9648 Jun 17 '26

True, but a barber got the inside of my lip with trimmers. I've had an ulcer in that area for like 5 months now

31

u/HastaNadaBueno Jun 17 '26

Yeah it’s not fool proof. Their trimmer could be offset or they could be too firm/aggressive. I also have a client that swears any vibration near his lips cause upsets so he trims his mustache himself at home.

I always keep my trimmers/clippers set safe and I don’t use a lot of pressure when performing services. It doesn’t take a lot. The hair is being cut on the outside or the skin so why press down ?? Even with straight razor shaving, the razor is sharp enough not a lot of pressure is needed.

20

u/alexs9648 Jun 17 '26

Yeah this guy was someone I'd left like a decade ago... He found his way into my current barbers. The dude moved the trimmers without a care, and somehow jammed it under my lower lip. He carried on casually without an apology.

47

u/HaterMD Jun 17 '26

Not to be the usual Reddit alarmist, but slow healing mouth sores are definitely something I’d bring up to a doctor.

21

u/Deprestion Jun 17 '26

Certified Reddit doctor here, the guy you replied to is gonna die 3 hours ago.

7

u/howismyspelling Jun 17 '26

u/ShinyGal999 Jun 17 '26

More than a nick it looks like he took a chunk directly, damn

5.3k

u/n4th4nV0x Jun 17 '26

His lip probably just burst apart without the muscle tension.

Must have bled like a bitch

1.5k

u/Rightful_Regret_6969 Jun 17 '26

That would need a stitch. Right ?

1.7k

u/PolloePatateAlForno Jun 17 '26

100%, I would think that without a stitch or two it would leave a crater there permanently

874

u/guess_33 Jun 17 '26

It will fill in, but there’s going to be a patch/scar there. I’ve lost 2 fingertips to slicers and they both healed that way.

Lips scar easily and are really hard to align perfectly when stitching back together. There’s nothing to align together in this scenario. It just needs to scab over and fill in. Trying to pull the skin together would probably create a worse looking scar than just letting it heal.

340

u/jimmy_robert Jun 17 '26

It felt so good, you tried it a second time?

423

u/guess_33 Jun 17 '26

I was just building a knives tolerance in my fingers. Kind of like Rasputin to cyanide.

53

u/my_nuts_wont_drop Jun 17 '26

I shaved off one with a mandolin slicer. Now I never use a mandolin slicer. Maybe I should try your strategy instead so I can enjoy the convenience of a mandolin slicer.

This has been a paid advertisement for mandolin slicers

30

u/Firefly_deadlock Jun 17 '26

Somehow everyones brain goes entirely blank when the mandolin comes out.

I worked in a professional kitchen and we threw away the mandolin after the 5th person used it to absolutely destroy a finger.

Never a single problem with the actual butcher-style electric slicer.

9

u/Glandtoglandcombat 29d ago

What the fuck were y'all processing that a deli slicer was an adequate substitute for a mandoline? I can't think of anything I cut with a mando that I would switch over to a slicer if the mando was out of commission.

It will leave less visible scarring properly sutured with a 6-0 nylon.

No, itll heal up on its own we dont stitch unless it crosses the Vermillion borderĀ

Ā Sure. It will heal as is... Just poorly.

Edit: I suture such tissues daily šŸ‘

21

u/TheResuscitologist Jun 17 '26

As do I. EM... that wouldnt get sutures in any ed ive ever worked at by an er doc I know

26

u/ICameSawAbstained Jun 17 '26

I'm aware.Ā

My experience some decade ago in my ED rotation would line up with your account. Your priorities are much more preservation-of-life orientated, and cosmetic outcomes are not high up that priority chain.Ā

Hats off to you for manning resus šŸ¤

But yes, if you want almost no visible scarring, suturing is the way.Ā

u/HipsEnergy Jun 17 '26

When I split my lip all the way through (a finger fit through it), I videocalled my cousin who's a plastic surgeon. She told me to keep it closed as well as I could, and to avoid going to emergency. Lips are extremely hard to stitch, and if they were stitched wrong, they'd bunch up and it would be much harder to fix. It took six months for the swelling to come down, but you can barely see the scar now, seven years later.

13

u/guess_33 Jun 17 '26

I’ve lost two finger tips to mandoline slicers. The doctor told me that they couldn’t stitch it because there’s nothing to stitch back together. They just wrapped it and let it do its thing.

I no longer touch those slicers.

335

u/HastaNadaBueno Jun 17 '26

Yeah the barber must have used the word ā€œnickā€ to downplay it. A Nick is a small scrape or cut. This is a full removal of a half inch of his lip. He must have been trying to trim a stray hair with a downward angle of the scissors and didn’t see his lip would fall inside the cutting area. Absolute disgrace of a barber. Either arrogant, lazy, negligent, or all three. This might have needed stitched. I can tell by looking at it no styptic powder was applied(would have been unbearable) but that also means all he got was the ol paper towel treatment. Pat it til it stops bleeding. SMH.

u/thatselverguy Jun 17 '26

Ever since reading the story of someone catching HepC from the barber, I've had a bad feeling of going there. I don't think I've seen a single barber take adequate care of their tools. But maybe they do rotate them out and clean them in the back and I just don't see it.

At a minimum dude owes him the cost of the doctor's visit and tetanus shot. The barber should be insured, so it's not like he's going to bankrupt him or anything, but there could be a few thousand dollars worth of expenses to get that to heal up (plus lost wages going to appointments, etc).

35

u/DismalSoil9554 Jun 17 '26

I split my bottom lip in 2025 and i still have a raised bumpy scar. OP should get a doctor to look at it asap and ask for damages.

It sounds cruel, but a professional who gets paid to improve peoples appearance should face consequences for literally disfiguring someone's face!

19

u/BananaPalmer 29d ago

Yeah dude, whatever the barber equivalent of malpractice is, this is that

This should never happen

14

u/GrokMonkey 29d ago

Barbers are licensed! In every state they have to be qualified to prove that they won't do this. There's literally an implicit assurance to every customer that nothing like this will happen to them in the U.S.

OP 100% needs to fight for coverage of any medical costs, plus damages if they had to miss work for treatment or if it's ultimately disfiguring (and that chunk of their face doesn't look like it's gonna grow back).
