Like not even a combined color scheme of the flags of each of the three countries hosting the world cup.

3.0k

u/FearTheSpoonman Jun 07 '26

Mexico, US and Canada has loads of potential with the flags too.

How about the letters ARE the trophy?

593

u/ClothesNo3433 Jun 07 '26

wait the C U M normally isn't the trophy?

It absolutely looks like an artistic representation of a sperm.

Reminds me of how many of us Brits thought the London 2012 Olympics logo resembled a couple engaging in oral sex.

32

u/Nekawaii19 Jun 07 '26

Hahaha I remember that! Sorry to say it was not just Brits, here in Mexico we made fun of that, too.

it's worth noting that the logo changes for each host city to represent them.

149

u/CocoMilhonez Jun 08 '26

It's amazing how all of them look hideous.

31

u/MajesticKoala3332 Jun 08 '26

The custom backgrounds look fine, imo it's the world cup that looks like an amateur photoshopped it on top

14

u/CocoMilhonez Jun 08 '26

Which is why all of them look hideous.

It looks like an amateur job by someone's nephew who self-taught himself Corel Draw. Even most backgrounds are nothing special and some are just bad.

I love how the "26" was the perfect opportunity to represent the whole american continent.

The vertical "26" in the new logo is already vaguely the shape of The Americas, they coul've leaned into it a bit more.

165

u/WarmBaths Jun 07 '26

it was meant to be a template so each host city could have their own design to go with it

83

u/Fazion Jun 07 '26

I don't like host countries not displayed on the logo, like on every previous logo ever. Super weird.

801

u/Jetstream-Sam Jun 07 '26

Since it's in three countries they probably couldn't agree on how to display it. Or America insisted it was just them.

407

u/Saltire_Blue Jun 07 '26

I don’t think it would be that difficult with some imagination

Euro 2000 was held in Belgium and the Netherlands

Euro 2008 Austria & Switzerland

Euro 2012 Poland and Ukraine

World Cup 2002 Korea & Japan

Fair enough it’s the first times it’s being held across 3 nations but still, shouldn’t be too difficult to come up with something that looks like a prison logo!

229

u/DefinitionOfAsleep Jun 07 '26

I don't think the logo is particularly "Japan" or "Korea".

111

u/lxpnh98_2 Jun 07 '26

I didn't know Google Chrome hosted a World Cup

22

u/DefinitionOfAsleep Jun 07 '26

97

u/TwentinQuarantino Jun 07 '26

It's quite sad they were able to agree on the entire organization of the world cup and even on the logo itself, but not on this, and because of it the logo looks undone.

They should take inspiration from Euro 2012 - Poland/Ukraine. They seem to be sane enough to agree on how to display it.

40

u/Maleficent-Drive4056 Jun 07 '26

We have no evidence they couldn't agree on how to display the countries...

9

u/thepkboy Jun 07 '26

uhm there's a comment on reddit saying it and it has positive upvotes, that's proof enough for me.

10

u/MessiLeagueSoccer Jun 07 '26

It would be so easy to just have a silhouette of all 3 countries with their respective flags/colors and can still be a little abstract and fun while still being recognizable.

615

u/gmehje Jun 07 '26

Ha. Love that. I designed that one flipping ages ago. Good memories.

171

u/Saltire_Blue Jun 07 '26

You designed that logo?

Cause that’s cool as fuck if you did

714

u/gmehje Jun 07 '26

Yep. Here’s the original sketch and my workings on the typography. Was the first one to use the trophy (needed something culturally neural as first to be co-hosted.) also made up of 6 circles which are the 6 FIFA confederations.

146

u/Saltire_Blue Jun 07 '26

That is amazing!

Thank you for sharing, I have a lot of nostalgia for that World Cup and that logo is a big part of it

208

u/gmehje Jun 07 '26

My pleasure. Brings back great memories. Also did the official poster, mascots, stadium dressing tickets etc.

46

u/Ill-Importance-9225 Jun 07 '26

Would be really cool if you could share some of those sketches

172

u/gmehje Jun 08 '26

This was never an official poster but to me it’s the most beautiful way of showing the elegance and authenticity of the logo. The calligraphy version of the logo was created as a gift to me by one of the two artists who helped with the official poster.

it's what you get when you have three countries that are not in their best geopolitical relations host a world event

All of this done just to eliminate as many continents as possible from going up against Saudi arabias bid for the next one or the one after I can't remember

That's what happens when you host 70% of WC games in a country that actively hates football. Most folks in the US don't even know it's happening, I've seen so many of them refer to it as "The FIFA thing that is happening soon".

54

u/ShookMyHeadAndSmiled Jun 07 '26

It's got nothing to do with the people. The 94 US was the first World Cup to ever sell our every game. There's nothing wrong with the local support for the game.

It's 100% a racist administration that frankly doesn't want foreigners coming here. International hotel bookings are way down because it's been made clear that this isn't a safe place even for white tourists.

With some clever omitting of the trademarked words, you will very much be able to. When there was a world cup in South Africa, clothing brands in my area were selling t-shirts saying just "South Africa" and some football motives, to avoid this.

It will be fine if it would be this same thing, but the text just:

There's a lot of evidence pointing towards the idea that fifa want to silently rebrand the fifa world cup to just "fifa"

They can do what they want, nobody even calls if the FIFA World Cup, it’s just the world cup

111

u/daisychaincrowns Jun 07 '26

Unfortunately morons here in the host city I live in are literally referring to the tournament as "FIFA" like saying shit like "did you get tickets for FIFA" ... thanks I hate it. And I think the dumb logo plastered all over the city with FIFA in huge letters is not helping.

50

u/HappyCyclist-604 Jun 07 '26

Partly it's due to World Cup's lockdown on the trademark, so that all bars are just advertising variations on "Summer Drink Specials" (with picture of a soccer ball) or my favorite "Two Bars, One Cup, See the spectacle!" (for a pair of dual-owned bars across town).

That's just so weird to hear as European and I really hope it doesn't come to us too. It feels like for ages now that countries with only very limited Football culture trying to use this sport to astroturf themselves.

For a lot of my friends and myself since the Russian worldcup its just not a joyful thing anymore. They dont even care about slavery (Qatar) or if the host nation is a war aggressor. Could they at least keep the name? It's like someone is loving it to destroy just for the sake of destruction and a few more gambling ads.

Trying to rebrand to just FIFA is somehow a worst idea than even trying to rebrand twitter to X. Throws away a great trademark for something that no one ever uses.

People literally hate FIFA, it is despised brand connected to deep corruption, unfair monopoly and all around shittiness but somehow they tolerate it cause they hold the World Cup which is generally viewed incredibly well. Nobody is going to call it just FIFA

6

u/iamnosuperman123 Jun 07 '26

It looks like it was created on PowerPoint.

u/vidys Jun 07 '26

Or Paint

well actually, it would look better in Paint as it would take more effort to create something there

In 2026 saying a design looks too shit for AI is quite something

Everyone in this thread is missing a lot of nuance in the logo.

See, that white space is a 2 and a 6, like for 2026.

Oh you did get that?

Well did you know that is the trophy they're playing for in the middle?

Huh. Ok. Then I got nothing

65

u/spoodigity Jun 07 '26

I kind of dig the 26 frame, but they slapped a jpeg trophy in the middle that comes across as lazy and uninspired.

30

u/MikeW86 Jun 07 '26

It would have been about 12 seconds work to just turn that trophy jpeg into a silhouette as well. I'm not saying it would have saved it but it would have been a slightly more congruent design choice.

The 2 and 6 is really fat, which just seems hilarious.

Apparently, FIFA said, "the logo was designed by its own in-house brand team, with support from several consulting agencies."

Designed by committee, guided by corruption.

23

u/-Profesorius- Jun 07 '26

This means it was designed by fifa peace prize wiener and consulting team was AI and yes ppl from administration.

Ain't no way that garbage took more than 1 person to make. I've made more complex/interesting logos after 2 months of experience with photoshop.

context?

OK, since most of the replies are being more unhelpful than usual, I did some research. This is a TikTok star called Emily Zugay, who does hilariously awful recreations of company logos. Presumably, she'd do a better job on a World Cup logo than whatever this was, and frankly I'm inclined to agree.

I mean even Santa Clara has a better Superb Owl logo this year and that was just a basic LX with a vaporwave style color scheme inlay.

Well I mean “Levis Stadium of San Francisco in Santa Clara” or whichever why they try and hide its in a completely different city this week.

I think 2014 was crap. Looked like a facepalm. 2026 is just so unremarkable, but far from a joke I think.

u/PurpleSkullGaming Jun 07 '26

  • 2018 idk

  • 2022 showing the infinite suffering necessary to build the stadiums and keep Qatar relevant politically
