General info when traveling to the Faroes

We have been asked a few times to make a sticky with general good to know info, as a considerable amount of the posts in this subreddit are asking about what to do and how to get around and such. A large part of these questions can be answered or found out by checking the tourism office website out https://visitfaroeislands.com/

If there's something you think should be added to this post, or have some links, then let us know and I'll add it to this post to avoid clutter.

Getting around

Public busses and ferries

Busses in Tórshavn

Helicopter

Places to stay

What to see/do in a week or so?

Some exelent response to this question can be found here, Here, here and also, here and here will there be(at some point) links to similar posts.

Hiking

The hiking guide by the tourist office

Hiking.fo All sorts of good hiking advice, gets updated on a frequent basis

Mykines

Mykines is probably the most visited island(pr capita) in the Faroes, so be aware that there will be large crowds on this island with about 10 inhabitants. The general recommendation is to take the boat out and try to book a seat on the helicopter going back, this is to have the best chance of not getting stuck on the island, as the currents are very strong and can make boat access tricky (to put it mildly). This video from June 2017 shows the conditions at the harbor quite well https://www.flickr.com/photos/31322479@N04/34499712544/in/faves-23485843@N02/

Do respect the wildlife there by keeping proper distance to it, and the locals by not disturbing them with putting cameras through their windows, flying drones in the village etc.

Drones

The rules regarding flying drones in the Faroes are as follows.

  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within 150 metres of a village, town or city or within 150 metres of main roads that connect villages
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within a 5-kilometre radius of Vágar Airport
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above summerhouses or camping areas, or in places where many people are gathered, e.g. at festivals
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above 100 metres from the ground
  • Drones MUST be insured
  • Illegal flying of drones in the Faroe Islands can result in a fine of DKK 5000.

Breaking these rules may also result in some irrate local(depending somewhat on location) taking a potshot at it with a shotgun, and I wouldn't blame them.

And so on and so forth...(to be updated over the coming days/weeks)

This weekend in the Faroes - practical questions

We're heading over for a few days tomorrow, Saturday 18th July. We're staying in Sorvagur in an airbnb style place, arriving during the afternoon.

What options do we have for buying food (shop or restaurant/takeaway) on arrival? Anything at the airport? We can bring a few things to eat but would need a bit of dairy probably.

We're then heading for Torshavn for the Sunday afternoon, going by helicopter and back on the bus. Is there likely to be anything open as a place to eat?

Any thoughts on whether to get a travel pass or to pay as we go on buses and ferries? I think that Monday we'll likely look to take a bus/ferry for sightseeing from Sorvagur, ideas for a route very welcome incidentally, but it seems marginal on a cost basis.

Car Sharing G! Festival

Hi, me and 2 friends are currently staying in Tórshavn and are attending the G! Festival but are travelling by bus. Sadly there is no real Nightbus before 2/4 AM. Is there anyone here who is also attending and going there by car where we could join? We'd happily contribute to the costs, any answers welcome! :)

Travel tips & help

Hi! I am traveling to the Faroe Islands at the end of August from the US. I am overwhelmed by the amount of things there is to do. Does anyone have any recommendations for things I NEED to see or do while there?

For reference, I am there August 20-24, so it is a relatively short trip.

Also, is there any locals willing to show us around their town/ culture while there? I am very intrigued by Faroe cuisine, day to day life, history, and whaling. We only speak english and spanish.

TIA and can’t wait to see your incredible homeland!

Volunteering

I’m interested in volunteering in the farao islands and I read about the Closed for maintenance project. It is too late to apply this year I’m thinking about next year. Has anyone here been and how did you like it? Are there any other projects you recommend?

Does anyone have experience with EES in Copenhagen en route to Faroe Islands?

Hi everyone,

I have a trip planned to Faroe Islands in early August this year. I will be flying from London to Faroe Islands with Scandinavian Airlines, with a 2 hour layover in Copenhagen (arrive 9:30am in Copenhagen, then depart 11:30am).

Copenhagen will be my first time entering the Schengen Area, so I assume I will need to complete the new European Union (EU) Entry/Exit System (EES) in Copenhagen. I have read online about a lot of long lines and delays due to EES. Makes me a bit worried that I will miss the connection.

Has anyone had any recent experiences with this?

Thanks in advance!

Where should I spend my free time?

Hello! I have a trip planned to the Faroe Islands for Sept 17 -21 and was hoping for some recommendations. I will be staying at Hotel Hafnia in Tórshavn and already have a few tours planned and I won't be renting a car. Below is what I have planned already.

My question is what should I do to utilize all the time on my first full day before my tour at 5:00 p.m. in Tórahavn?  Where would you recommend I spend my time? Klaksvik, is this feasible? Or would going to Nólsoy or Sandoy be a good idea? Thanks for any advice!!

My schedule so far

1.  walking tour for 1.5 hours in Tórshavn on Sept 18 at 5pm

  1. 7 hour "All you can see"  tour on Sept 19 with sights on Streymoy, Vágar and Eysturoy islands to the following.

Bøur

Eiði

Eysturoy Island

Fossá Waterfall

Gásadalur

Gjógv

Múlafossur

Oyggjarvegurin

Risin & Kellingin

Saksun

Streymoy Island

Tjørnuvík

Vágar Island

  1. 1.5 hour Vestmanna sea cliffs  boat trip on Sept 20 for 2:30pm. I would need to get myself to Vestmanna

Photography Work Trade in September

Hey folks!

I just booked a flight for the Faroe Islands, and will be visiting from 7 September to 14 September with my partner. I am eagerly looking forward to visiting a destination that I figured was a pipe dream due to expensive flights (not the case now!). I am a professional photographer by trade, and a barterer by nature: reciprocity is a firm core part of who I am. In my 30+ countries I've visited, I've done a fair share of work swaps, trading photography of lodgings, excursions, branding photography, family portraits, etc. for

All of that to say that I figured I'd throw out the offer to photograph your business, property rental, family, ??? if you're in need of new or updated images. My work can be found here, but I'm happy to share previous work trade galleries that I've done while making friends around this wondrous world of ours. Takk fyrir!

Looking for my birth mom

I know this is a stretch, but I’m looking for a woman who adopted her child in 1984 to a Danish family. She was around 16 at the time, as far as I’m told.

If you know anything, please contact me. Because it might be delicate matter for that woman, I would prefer any personal information in dm’s.

If you have any good advice about finding my birthmother, it would be very much appreciated. And if I don’t find her or she doesn’t want contact , I would love to learn about the country, culture and so on. My adoptive parents didn’t talk about this, but as I had kids in my own - it’s has become important for me.

Looking for feedback on my Faroe Islands page

Hi everyone!

I've been building Symbolia, a free online encyclopedia about countries, historical states, flags, coats of arms, and political history.

I've just finished a major update of the Faroe Islands page and would love some feedback from people who know Faroese history.

I'm mainly looking for:

  • Historical inaccuracies
  • Missing events
  • Incorrect dates
  • Missing flags or coats of arms
  • Anything else that should be improved

Direct link:
https://symbolia.org/entry/384
https://symbolia.org/entry/1456
https://symbolia.org/entry/1464

Any corrections or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is there a housing register on the Faroe Islands?

Is there a housing register similar to the Danish BBR in the Faroe Islands, where you can see what materials houses are made out of, and previous sales prices and things like that?

Eg eri føroyingur, men veit ikki um tað er krav at skriva á enskum her? :P

Edit: I’ve been told it’s called a property register. That is what I’m talking about. :)

10 day holiday to Faroes is over ....

I feel so sad, yet so happy for the memories and experiences, we did pretty much everything in the northern Islands, didn't make it to Sandoy or Sudoroy - but that's for another time.

I am from Ireland, I used to holiday in the west/southwest when I was a kid every summer, so I've always loved the Atlantic.

West Ireland can be wild, but the Faroes for me was a whole new level ... incredible, I think it's safe to say it was the best trip I've ever taken, northern Norway would be a close 2nd.

We got so lucky with puffins too , saw them on Mykines and then on Kalsoy [I got incredible photos here] , and then near the Múlafossur waterfall.

Thanks to everyone here that gave me advice ... I will post some photos soon.

Advice for my 1 week itinerary

Hi, I've been looking for trips to go over the summer and noticed that the plane tickets for Faroe Islands from August 23rd to August 29th were relatively cheap. I've heard about the wonderful views and hikes of this place and decided to go with a friend. However, we can't drive so we would have to rely solely on public transportation.

We will be staying in Sandavagur since there appears to be a guesthouse that is a lot cheaper than the hotels in Torshavn.

Here's what I have planned so far:

Day 1 (August 24)- My plane would arrive on August 24th at 1:25 pm. I would take the Bus 300 at 2:20 pm to take it to Sandavagur. After settling everything down, I will take the 4:00 pm Bus 300 to Miovagur and do the Trælanípan & Bøsdalafossur hiking trail. This takes about 2.5-3 hours and I might want to watch the sunset. Unfortunately the last bus going back is at 5:50 pm, so I would have to walk back to Sandavagur from Miovagur.

Day 2 (August 25) - I don't have any hikes planned on this day, maybe I'll visit Torshavn?

Day 3 (August 26) - I plan to do the Drangarnir tour guide this day. There shouldn't be any time issues this day.

Day 4 (August 27) - I plan to go to the Mykines on this day. I'll catch the 8:30 am Bus 300 to Sorvagur, arrive at 8:55 am, and be at ferry spot at 9:30 am. I get approximately 5 hours on the Mykines, and have to be back at the ferry spot at 2:15 pm. Then, I'll catch the 4:30 pm bus back to Sandavagur.

Day 5 (August 28) - I plan to go to the Kallur Lighthouse this day. I would have to catch the 7:05 am Bus 300 to Torshavn. Then, take the 7:55 am Bus 400 to Klaksvik and arrive at 9:25. Is this 5 minute window between the transfer too risky? The ferry is at 10:00 am. I return to the ferry spot at 3:10 pm. Then, I take the 4:25 pm Bus 400 to Torshavn and arrive at 6:00 pm. At Torshavn, I take the 7:00 pm Bus 300 back to Sandavagur.

Does this look sound? My main concern are the bus times. Worst case scenario I'll miss a bus or a bus runs late, I would either miss out what's planned on that day or won't have a way back to the guesthouse. This is my first time planning a trip and I hope all goes well. If you can provide any advice, comments, or insight, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi! I wish to ask why it seems to be so difficult to spell “Faroe Islands” correctly.

Of course, I don't speak for everyone, but as a Faroese person, I physically cringe when people spell the name of the country incorrectly - for example, "Faroe Island," "Faroe," "Faore," "Fareo," "Färöer" (German), "Faeroe," etc. About half of the posts here misspell the country's name, despite everything else in the post being spelled correctly.

I just can’t understand why it is so difficult to spell, when even the name of the subreddit you're posting in is called "Faroe Islands." You see the name on Google, your flight ticket, your hotel booking, the airport gate, the airport's welcome sign, this subreddit, and other places. Im curious how you still end up spelling the name incorrectly?

Maybe other Faroese people don't care and think I'm making a big deal out of a non-issue, and think I should worry about more serious matters, which I get, but I can't help finding these misspellings odd and a little bit careless or disrespectful.

The country is spelled "Faroe Islands" or "the Faroes" in English, and "Føroyar" or “Föroyar” in Faroese. This is because the country consists of islands, not an island. By spelling it "Faroe Island" or "Faroe," you're implying that there is only one island you are visiting.

Very welcome to share your thoughts, thank you! :)

Visiting in April

My fiancée and I are getting married in April of next year, and we’re thinking about the Faroe Islands for our honeymoon. We know April weather can be unpredictable and cold, but we are from a pretty cold place in the United States (Minnesota) so we are fine with that. Our bigger concern is whether businesses and tours will be open.

When do tourist businesses typically open for the season? Would we have a hard time finding puffin tours, fishing, hiking tours, and similar at that time of year?

Thanks!

Faroese bank if moving to Denmark?

Hello,

Anyone here who has moved to Denmark for a few years for school or worked in Denmark as well are there any issues with using a Faroese bank account to receive pay and is there any real need to open a Danish Bank account?

Shoes

Hi everyone! My husband, 17 month old, and I are coming to the area in early August. We’re trying to decide what shoes to bring which is a little complicated because we’re also spending a few weeks in Norway and then Copenhagen after Faroe Islands.

We are not planning on doing any difficult hikes since we’ll have our 17 month old. Would hiking sandals and sneakers be ok or should we definitely bring hiking boots?

Thank you!

2027 Summer Commercial Fishing Job

Hey!

I just visited the Faroe Islands for the first time and fell in love with it. I want to spend next summer there, probably working on a commercial fishing boat. Do you guys know of any places that hire for the summer? How hard or competitive is it? Is there anything I could do to be a more attractive candidate?

I don't have much experience in this area, but I live in New England, so I'm confident I can get the necessary certificates next year.

I'm a Danish citizen with a basic level of the language. I'm not sure if that helps, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Any responses are appreciated, thank you!
