Cat Picture - OC What is actually going on inside her brain?
She keeps showing up to visit me, and every single time she goes absolutely feral for no reason. 😭
She'll roll all over the ground, sprint in random directions, do little jumps, her pupils get huge and her ears are all over the place... then suddenly sit there like the calmest cat on Earth before immediately going back to being a complete menace.
I'm literally doing absolutely nothing. I'm not playing with her or anything—she just decides it's chaos time.
What is actually going on inside her little brain? Do your cats do this too, or is she just a little weirdo?

I notice she keeps checking to be sure you're still there with her. She feels safe to enjoy. And, normal cat behavior.

I chase my cats around the house and people are like, "You're scaring them."
Then, people act dumbfounded when my cats come when I call.

u/Vintage-Grievance 19h ago
One of our cats loved to be chased when he was younger.
My younger sister would chase him down the hallway into one of the bedrooms, then she'd take off in the opposite direction, and he would turn around and chase her back.
Sometimes the game would be mixed with 'hide and seek', where my sister would run and hide somewhere, he'd chase after her and find her, then she'd burst out of her hiding spot and chase him.He had specific "Chase me!" behaviors that would kick the whole thing off (unless people were too busy or tired to indulge him).
He kind of phased out of it as he got older.

I love that story. Ive had a similar experience too. I spent some time on an intentional community with some decent acreage. Most visitors camped in tents on the property away from any artificial structures.
A young tortie on the land decided that I was an easy mark, so on my 10 minute walk to my tent at the end of the night, she would follow me. Every now and then, she'd disappear, wait a minute, then burst out of the bushes and ambush me straight on! I'd usually laugh and she'd run off and do it again. One time she got me so good I legitimately screamed in terror. The absolute sweetheart chirped at me and rubbed my legs until she knew I had my shit back together, then she recommenced the ambush game. <3

Lmao! I love that story! She must have known you’d be open to this type of play, the great huntress and her prey, lol. 😆

u/Heavy-Suit-4217 19h ago
Yeah, when the kitten gets too old for chase it's time for another kitten. Then, old cat just watches.

I get to have a cat at work (shes working too, mouser ftw!) and its so fun to see people do a double take when I go "Mewnshineeeee come say hi" and she bolts around a corner like a dog lol

u/Capital-Debate7619 11h ago
my first cat she loved to stalk us around staircases, slooowwwly, step by step eyes locked on us then she’d run up on us all at once. she’d even stalk me while i was taking a bath lol. my adult cat Loved to be chased-every morning at my bedroom door doing the dance. i didn’t chase her hard, i’m like hopping chasing her and giggling. after a circle around the house she’d be done and we’d end up on the bed lying down looking at each other. miss her.

These appear to be greebles with a 90-degree offset. Hence, the sideways fighting style.

To me it almost looks like the cat wants the person to play with it. That posture is the universal signal for play. I feel like the cat wants to be chased or a play fight.

u/SaulsAll Tuxedo 1d ago
The being near you situation causes physical reactions of happy energy. The brain then tries to interpret the physical signals into actionable desires, thus the rolling and sprinting and twitching. If you were another cat, you might begin engaging in play rough-housing: chasing and pouncing along with kitty.

u/Lumpy_Benefit666 1d ago
If my cat does this kinda stuff its impossible for me to not fight her. Act like a lunatic and your belly is getting got, i dont make the rules.

u/Justanotherbone420 1d ago
Same. Don’t have a second cat and my dogs don’t want to play with the kitten (yet, hopefully. They’re lightly terrified of her), so I play with her so she’ll let me sleep at night 😂 and it’s fun!!
30
u/Bendlerp 22h ago
When we brought the kittens home the dogs were afraid of them because our adult female hated the dogs and basically everything except our son lol The smallest of the two kittens immediately started wrestling with one the dogs and I was like "YEAH! Establish dominance early!" lol. The bigger of the two treated him like a surrogate mother. Trying to nurse etc... The smaller one and him still have wrestling matches and the big one still loves snuggling with him. Hopefully it works out similarly for you.
The other dog they don't care about whatsoever.

u/Joeness84 16h ago
My bosses dog (2yr goldendoodle) and my shopcat (1yr calico) are super besties and roll around and chase each other, then the cat rubs all over her

u/coolcoolcool485 20h ago
I sometimes will get on the floor with mine when they do this (when I get home usually) and omg mine immediately turn into the biggest mushes. They just roll and rub all over and purr, they're so sweet.

Agreed, she wants to play, but, given that she’s out in the “wild,” she is also periodically checking for dangers. Looks like she hears or notices something when she pauses, aka the calm moments, but otherwise she wants play time!
Also your dry grass probably feels good on her back and sides.
17
u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 22h ago
All of this! Probably each thought cycles though the brain “ Happy! play! what’s that-check. Happy! play….”

Or sit in the complaint box. My tuxedos complaints were about food. My calico had occasional problems with not getting enough treats. It was funny to watch them cue up once.
7
u/Lost_it_all24 20h ago
My cats spoke some limited English. Food, hi, love, no. I think that I could recognize: quick get out of the water I save you, I played with your kids I deserve treats, where were you I got hungry, why are you putting the baby in water‽, you people are so weird, no I don't want more cuddles, it's time to wake up and feed me, etc.

Visits? I live hear!

u/Pocketus_Rocketus 1d ago
I once heard that the greebles they chase are just their eye-floaters catching their attention. Just like us, there's stuff in the fluid of their eyes that sometimes is visible. While we just ignore it, they see those lil floaters and think there's a bug to be chased. The wild weird head movement? You try keeping one of those floaters in the center of your vision!

I tell my tuxedo that I’m gonna come at it like a spider monkey all the time. She also loves to show you how big she is and puff her tail up all menacingly, when she does that, I say she’s jacked up on Mountain Dew
71
u/CommitteeImmediate66 1d ago
I would try to play with her! Get a wand toy or even a ball (some cats enjoy chasing them). She looks like my cat if I ignore her asking me to play. Either that or that part of your garden has some smell she wants to replace with her own
44
u/CatDogAU 1d ago
She needs to poo or did a very recent poo.
(I’ve got a grey boy and calico girl, not bio-related, who both telegraph their poos with chaos beforehand, then celebrate their poos with chaos after.)
21
u/Antique-Mouse-4209 22h ago
Our calico girl loudly announces a successful poo as she's coming out of the box. Then sometimes gets the zoomies!

Maybe back is itchy. See how the skin right above the tail twitches right before she jumps. My cat has feline hyperesthesia and does a similar thing.
In her case, if she's feral, I bet it's caused by fleas. Can you get her treated?
14
u/actfatcat 23h ago
Fleas, so obviously itchy.
10
u/esperind 17h ago
yep, its kind of concerning that people dont recognize one of the tall tale signs of fleas. Any sort of prolonged twitching is suspect of fleas or some other biting insect.
12
u/cslexotics 22h ago
Thanks for mentioning FHS. It’s not well known! I have one with severe mutilation and it’s NOT fun!
18
u/Horror-Outside7410 23h ago
I said the same. Can't believe so many people think she's just happy when she's trying to dig her back into the ground.
12
9
u/carriegood 22h ago
If she's feral, she probably does have fleas, but the rolling around on the ground is meant to entice the viewer to pay attention and play with her. My cats have all done this, and none had fleas. I had one who got so frantic for attention he'd practically throw himself down onto his back and wriggle like a Mexican jumping bean. Another one would get walked outside on a leash, and he was always rubbing his back on the ground because it feels good, no fleas on him either. If fleas were the issue, she'd also be scratching and chewing at her fur to get to them.
13
u/mooshinformation 21h ago
It's the skin on her back twitching right before she bolts that makes me think she's itchy and/or has FHS
5
u/carriegood 21h ago
My cats do that all the time, though. Especially when they're in overload mode like OP's.
3
u/El--Borto 20h ago

Cause I’m a stupid fucking cat, and I don’t know shit, and I don’t know what it is to be sad.

I have no idea how much the world sucks, cause I have no reference levels.
Holy Hell, that guy’s bringing me food! The food sucks but I don’t even know it.
Now I’m shitting in a box, cause I don’t give a fuck, and the guy throws it out for me.
Now I think I’ll lie down here. Now I think I’ll lie down here. Cause I got no fucking bills to pay.
Sometimes I look out windows cause I’m stupid as hell! Holy Christ, it’s a piece of paper!!!
I have no idea how pointless I am, and I don’t even know I’m gonna die.
Now It’s time to get to bed. Gotta get some fucking rest, cause it’s the best day ever tomorrow!”

I don’t want to he this annoying person, but her back spasms every time before she freaks out might means she has fleas, allergies, or feline hyperesthesia. Maybe you should show this video to the vet just to make sure she’s just orange and nothing else. She’s adorable 🧡

If she isnt fixed, then this is in heat behavior. Unspayed female cats are pretty much always in heat, ready to procreate. Because she likes you and feels safe with you she is acting silly, overly friendly and presenting when she lies flat with her back legs slightly splayed.
If you want to make her a pet, get her spayed. She will still have the zoomies and roll around, but the belly down presentation with the twitching down her spine and hips will go away.
