Advice How do I keep my cat off my computer?

This is Chomper. He really likes being on top of my computer. I pick him up, I say “no”, then place him on the floor. He’ll get up on top of it as soon as I go into another room. Should I keep scooping him up or just let him lay there?

Edit: thank you all for your advice and for loving Chomper! He’s surrounded by love! Thanks again! 🥰

One does not simply say "no" to a cat.

217

u/Professional-Team324 Jun 13 '26

I mean, you CAN, they just don't care to hear it lol

59

u/MurderousButterfly Jun 14 '26

There is literally a little 'no' pocket in their ears. That's where all the no's go, so the cat doesnt actually hear them.

Doesn’t even have to be a desktop pc

I feel like you should add a surface thermostat that activates a fan pointed towards the kitty to solve the issue

I used to think that standard issue cats were "plain", but my current cat is one and I just really like how similar yet unique their markings are.

My solution was to encase the PC.

Don't worry fellow tech enthusiasts, it has enough room to breathe. I checked.

And no it's not on the carpet.

The note cards thrown everywhere was from my cat hopping onto the shelf and knocking them off so he could lay down.

The sticky note pad is to protect the power button from furry tippy taps.

58

u/CathairNowhere Jun 13 '26

I ended up turning off "power button shuts pc off" in the settings, it still works for hard reset but I have to press it really long, so at least it stopped the "accidents"

40

u/unicornsfearglitter Jun 13 '26

What is up with the trend of having the power button on top. Clearly the designer wasn't a cat owner.

35

u/Jewsusgr8 Jun 13 '26

I'd wager the designer was a cat owner and was influenced at claw point to make this design for all households to struggle with keeping their PC on while cats are walking the premises.

I used to have a roommate that would watch movies over FaceTime with her long distance bf. My cat would hang out with her, and slowly it melted his cat hating heart. It wasn’t long after they got married that they got 3 cats, all his idea. That was over ten years ago and they’ve lost two now, she finally wants dogs but he’s insisting on more cats lmao.

Probably twice as much height as is needed. Fans should work at full efficiency with only a couple inches (4cm) of air gap. Plus, you don't want to leave enough room for that bugger to get underneath the riser.

50

u/ugihfff Jun 13 '26

yeah, but probably the only thing the person had. seems to work well enough for that little rascal

IF he's covering vents and air intake, maybe try placing some kind of elevated mini-table/platform or smth for him to sit on, although those may not work as your little orange goblin probably likes the warmth of the computer. I'd say leave him be AS LONG AS HE ISNT COVERING VENTS, if he is, keep scoopin' that boy

1.1k

u/Pitiful_Option_108 Jun 13 '26

This. Cats like warm sports. Like you just kinda make sure the vents aren't blocked and you should be good.

403

u/BlackSwampMage Jun 13 '26

Gotta create a more desirable spot nearby. I have a little platform underneath bout calf height sitting down for my girl to hang out. She usually lays there instead of on the pc. But occasionally if she wants more attention she’ll go up there in eyesight.

100

u/Icarus059 Jun 13 '26

Exactly what I did, there's pc table mounts for cat beds, which I put to my left side that's elevated and my kitties usually go there instead (unless there's a scary noise then they climb back on the pc because it's under my desk and is a hiding spot)

63

u/Flimsy_Category4211 Jun 13 '26

This is the answer, but also your cat probably does it to be near you as much as have the warmth

Might I suggest a nearby box on the floor? Very rare that my orange one can resist the cardboard.

92

Maybe try one of these? If he likes the warmth, you can add a small pet safe heating pad.

20

u/CruzaSenpai Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

If you go with this solution OP (this is pretty cool), make sure the bed is mounted higher than your PC tower. I suspect your cat likes it because it's warm and because it's the highest point near you that it's comfortable to sit on.

Edit: Also make sure the bed is easily accessible. If it's a difficult jump or dismount, the cat won't care.
