Sad Girl Dinner ā›ˆļø Last dinner before I go to jail..

My sweet boyfriend made some tie dye ravioli with brie/ricotta and apple, and focaccia last night.

I’ll be turning myself in at 4:30 to begin my ten day sentence..

Update for those asking: It was as bad/worse than I thought it would be lol.. Locked down 21-31 hours a day in our cells, 2-3 hours out, and that was really really hard.. obviously the food was terrible, couldn’t eat much besides carrots for lunch, and pieces of cake and milks I’d trade my breakfast trays for. Made some friends. Started my period and only got two pairs of underwear. They did give me my meds after day 3, so that was good enough. Read five four hundred page novels. I feel bad for a lot of the younger girls in there. I felt really weird yesterday, but I ate a friggin huge breakfast so that was nice. Fucking terrible dude, I definitely never want to go back šŸ™šŸ»

And don’t allow anyone to borrow anything either!

3.5k

u/asystole_unshockable Well-Read & Well-Fed Jun 12 '26

Someone asked the risk with this - allowing people to borrow things has several risks, the most obvious being not getting it back or having it damaged, additionally lending items can be seen as a weakness, as in you’re lending something out in return for protection or you’re lending it because you’re afraid to say ā€œnoā€, leading others to target you. I was the healthcare provider for a state prison and saw this regularly. However with OP having a 10 day sentence in what is likely a county setting, it’s likely not going to be anything like that for her.

OP you got this girl, we are all rooting for you! Show us your first dinner on the outs ā™„ļø!

My mom was an RN that left rehab/long term care facilities after not being able to 'rebound' from a favorite client passing. She thought it would be easier working in a prison setting because she wouldn't feel pity for the population, but she was wrong. She would come home and cry about things she saw in the infirmary.

ETA: She was a nurse at a maximum security prison with a working electric chair & death row inmates.

Damn, that had to be a daily mental roller coaster. Do you think you'd were treated differently at all? Like, did inmates ask you medical questions if they couldn't see staff?

Mom thought 'Marty the murderer' dying on her would be less heartbreaking than 'Gertrude the granny'. She ended up seeing a lot of young guys doing max time for drug related charges tho. I became a social worker because of her experience there.

Having done the same it’s not super depressing (yeah, there are depressing cases, like any of healthcare), but it’s an interesting place that’s high pace and low resource with a lot of ER overlap. You get a lot of the same patients the ER sees.

Honestly, there are some more funny and fun stories aside from sad ones that I didn’t expect.

It was interesting, to say the least! I particularly enjoyed my D rosters, which would be inmates with a (or multiple) psychiatric diagnosis. But like I said above, OP isn’t going to a state facility for 10 days (at least not in my state, that would be pretty unusual) and while it’s not going to be the best experience of her life, it’s not going to be nearly as bad as a longer stay or a stay in a prison environment as it relates to a county setting.

A friend of mine did a couple of weeks so I sent her some books (it was allowed as long as they shipped directly from the retailer to the jail) and one of them was a fancy book with astrological charts based on your specific birthday (not my interest but she’s into it). She said it made her super popular because everyone wanted her to look their birthday up for them. It’s my favorite tip for anyone going to a women’s jail.

332

u/AirlineObjective921 šŸ’š Pickle Freak šŸ’š Jun 12 '26

When I went to jail a girl got a pack of Tarot cards sent to her.

She was super popular after that. Everyone wanted a reading, didn't matter if you were into that sort of thing or not, it was something fun to pass the time.

No experience with jail time (no shade) but I read books about graphology - it’s about interpreting handwriting. Itā€˜s fascinating what you can see.

Whenever I mentioned this, I was beleaguered into doing everyoneā€˜s. Seriously. That’s why I’m not talking about it anymore. I spent hours at dinner parties looking at three sentences and a signature each. Part of the popularity is that it’s rare.
Maybe give it a try?

My bestie's BF had to go to county jail for some weekends due to being super stupid.

He said the worst part is the boredom. The jail library was 99% bibles and 1% Stephen King. The guy who controlled the deck of cards was top dog and everyone wanted to play a hand. It's the only thing available to make the time go by and be bearable.

The food he said was utterly disgusting, like rotten baloney sandwiches. You could opt for the vegetarian diet which was peanut butter sandwiches. He said the side benefit to the PB sandwich was the constipation because...I'm sure we can all figure that out.

Like the other people have said, just mind your business and stay out of drama situations. It’s ok to be friendly! The people in there are people too, you’re not walking in to a facility full of people that want to hurt you, remember that! Those ladies just want to do their time and go home, just like you.

I spent almost 48 hours in county in my very early 20's and the girlies and I all ended up friends very quickly lol. We were hooting and cheering as each girl got called up for release. "Cellmate" and I ended up having a convoluted joke about how we were only in there because we opened an old time capsule and found a 24 pack of Zima.

Years later I went in for a blood test ordered by my doc for some medical concerns and when the phlebotomist turned around it was her and we both screamed "ZIMA!!!!" at the same time. 10 days sucks but ultimately OP will be just fine.

u/WoodsandWool Foraging Bog Witch Jun 12 '26

I’m really torn about this because it does depend a lot on the specific county.

Generally, county isn’t too bad and you’ll likely be fine OP, but some counties jail is actually way worse than prison. Not local holding jails, but actual county jail for longer non-prison sentences can be much much worse than federal prisons due to a number of factors like lower budgets, overpopulation, etc. Fed prisons are actually usually pretty decent, state prisons are typically rougher.

OP keep your wits about you, don’t share anything, be polite but don’t be overly nice or people pleasing. Set your jaw and have some sharp edges until you know what kind of crowd you’re in. 10 days is very short and I’m sure you’ll be just fine, just keep your head on a swivel and assume everyone wants something from you.

Source: been to both city holding jails & county myself, and have unfortunately had a lot of loved ones serve longer county sentences and federal prison sentences.

46

u/AirlineObjective921 šŸ’š Pickle Freak šŸ’š Jun 12 '26

She knows how long she's in for and has a boyfriend who made her a going away meal; she'll be fine.

I was in County for 3 months and most of the stress was not knowing when the heck I was gonna be let out and having no one to call outside.

One of the other ladies had a pen pal from the guys side of jail who made a joke about female jail being just a bunch of girls braiding each others hair and he was surprisingly accurate.

25

u/WoodsandWool Foraging Bog Witch Jun 13 '26

I hear you, and I hope that’s OP’s experience. But respectfully, it really depends on the county & even just the current inmates. I’m not trying to scare OP, just want her to keep her wits about her and not go in with a false sense of security. It should be obvious pretty quickly what the general vibe is.

you can do 10 days in county no problem - promise! i’ve been in county jail a few times, and your biggest problem is usually gonna be the boredom and the drama (because of the boredom lol) with a 10 day sentence

also, with a sentence that short, commissary might be an issue. there’s a chance you won’t get it until right before you’re released, which sucks

take advantage of tablets and video calls - they’re expensive after awhile, but worth it. 3 years ago my husband was in county for a month (yes i know, we’re ridiculous lol) and i scheduled video visits for us twice a day. he said it kept him sane and gave him something to look forward to. so take advantage of that!

read books, watch crappy tv, and find a nice girl or 2 to bullshit with. you’ll do great šŸ’•

u/mschanandlerbong___ Hazy Grazer šŸ˜¶ā€šŸŒ«ļø Jun 12 '26

One of my old friends had to do the same sentence, so that was helpful for some insight. I also have an ex that spent several months in jail as well(yes, I have always been an idiot šŸ˜‚), so I’ve been on the other side. My main concern was being able to have my antidepressants/anti anxiety meds (non narcotic), but it seems like that won’t be an issue. Thank you for the kind words and insight, I’ve honestly been so anxious all day and can’t even eat which is super frustrating. I probably won’t respond to any more comments because it’s a little overwhelming. I didn’t expect so many responses at all, but I sure do appreciate the kindness. šŸ’“

He said there was a couple weirdos in there but it was overall no big deal. If you have a family history of addiction, it's possible there is a genetic predisposition involved in your struggle. You might need help from a physician who treats addiction rather than therapy alone. Some people need pharmaceutical help to stay clean.

Use every tool at your disposal to beat this, because you deserve a better life and the risk of harming others when you lose control is not worth the temporary numbing of your pain. Talk to doctors, social workers, addiction specialists, therapists, whoever you need to talk to in order to figure this out. It is pretty much impossible to beat it on your own, so you have to find the help that works best for you as an individual.

My brother also died from alcoholism 4 years ago too.. in the past year I’ve done 3 months of intensive therapy programs including 30 days in patient. Relapsed. Moved into a sober living house with some awesome women for several months.. I maintain personal therapy weekly, and still go to meetings once in a while. I’m really trying man. It sucks having to be someone that has to work so hard for it. Took a long time to admit I’ll have to do this forever, but that’s just the way it is I reckon. Thank you though for the advice regardless.

Yes! Naltrexone and Wellbutrin are shown to be helpful pharmaceutical therapy for sobriety when used in conjunction with other therapies (like talk therapy).

You got this one day at a time OP 🫶

ETA: the person below reminded me that GLP-1s are being talked about/researched/used off label for addiction too. We have much better pharmaceutical options now, and ones that don’t replace addiction with a less harmful addiction. Worth exploring for anyone in recovery - they might not be appropriate, but worth having a conversation with a healthcare provider (assuming one has access to healthcare).

Wishing you the best on your 10 days! I lost my best friend to alcoholism 4 months ago. Her mom had passed away 3 years prior and she really struggled those few years. By the time she was admitting it, it was too late. She was in the ICU and then left and checked into rehab, we were all so fucking proud, and then she caught an infection and couldn’t overcome the damage that was already done to her little body.

I miss her every single day. We spoke on the phone literally daily. I’ve felt so lost without her. I was closer to her than my sister or my family tbh.

I know I’m just a stranger but if you can’t do it for yourself (which sounds like you’re really trying), do it for your brother and all your loved ones. We are all just getting by without her.

Be strong!!!!!!! And good luck! We are all rooting for you ✨✨✨

You probably won’t even be in long enough for commissary to be a thing you have to worry about but bring some cash on your person just in case.

49

Seconding ā€œbring cash.ā€ In my jurisdiction, the jail will release you at any time of the day or night and for a single woman that can be rough. If your phone dies and they don’t let you charge it you’ll want money for a taxi or something!

I support reforming the prison system, destroying for profit prison system and heavily champion restorative justice. In this case, since she was passed out in her car, I'd double up on treatment. Punishing addicts very rarely works. Might feel good for the billionaires owning the work camp prisons, but doesn't do much for addiction.Ā

My mom is a raging alcoholic. Has been for my entire life. She’s 70 years old and got her first DUI last year. Her sentence was 1 night in jail and an interlock device in her car for 6 months. She learned absolutely nothing. IMO she should have spent a year in county. Dry her ass out. She put multiple people’s lives (including mine as a child) in danger. Driving under the influence should be considered a violent crime. While I agree that shaming people for addiction doesn’t really work, having them experience actual consequences and not just one night in jail might help with accountability. I’m so over the dancing around addict’s feelings. At some point it is a choice and choices have consequences.

Dont make after friends. Like, be friends while you are there, but dont take numbers and be like "let's keep in touch!" . (Or take numbers with the intent of throwing them out) . I say this bc 10 days is not long enough to know someone, and you dont really want to befriend career criminals. I stayed in for a month. At the beginning I thought I might have a few outside friends afterwards . By the end i decided I dont want to keep any of them in my life. It was a good call- I seen the same people nodding out in the streets and causing chaos , and that part of my life is done and gone.

She got a dui for being passed out high in her parked car. It's not better, but it is a tad more information.

It's really important information imo. It takes it from a "you are a wildly selfish wreckless person and you deserved worse" to a "oh yeah, I can see how that happened, that fkn sucks."

Not operating the vehicle is everything.

Hey girl! Just wanted to say you’re not alone in struggling with drinking. It took me 5 years to finally quit. Hardest thing I’ve ever done. You seem like you’re self aware and willing to grow and learn, which is the best thing you can do right now. You got this. You’re not alone in having been through the struggle.Ā

Don’t forget- you’re a visitor to some of the people that live there. Don’t complain or brag about what you’ll do once you’re out. Stay quiet- the house mouse (the one who gathers intel will help you right away). Don’t talk about money on your books or the fact that you can call. Some women don’t have it that way and the bragging will get you in spots you don’t want to be in. Grab a book immediately if you can! Don’t judge the food- graciously take it, if you don’t want it, offer it to the house mouse. Your sidecar (the one next to you will hopefully keep you sane). Keep cool. Don’t shower when you want- watch the flow and get in when it’s not a popular time- you don’t want to take a time that belongs to someone living there. Wipe the food tables down/ if they see you being helpful w that/ you won’t be voluntold to do toilets.

I’m really proud of you for owning your mistakes and taking accountability for your actions. That is not an easy thing to do.

Congratulations on your sobriety. It seems like you’re headed down a better path. Keep going ā¤ļø

No temptation for 10 days! gotta think positively

Do you meditate? I would highly recommend beginning the practice as a way of staying centered while in that very upsetting and chaotic environment

ps meditation is my FAVORITE drug and it is free and always available 🧘

Can't believe I get to use this "The Wire" quote.

Proud of you for working to maintain your sobriety and accepting your punishment for your unfortunate choice.

When I was in college I spent 3 days in jail. The ladies with me were honestly pretty nice but one of them snuck in drugs which resulted in our whole area being strip searched. We didn’t have enough beds so every night someone took the floor on this weird plastic cot thing.

Otherwise, food is gross, and it’s hard to stay clean. Overall would never go back but you will survive and hopefully continue on your path towards bettering your physical and mental health.

Good luck to you!!!!!!
