Classical literature

Has anyone here read any classics? Most have read Shakespeare but has anyone ever read John Milton? There are many classics, I’ve read many but not enough, does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts they’d like to share?

Communism

Karl Marx defined communism as a classless, stateless society achieved through the inevitable historical overthrow of capitalism by the working class. In The Communist Manifesto, he summarized its core practical objective as the total abolition of bourgeois private property and the centralization of production in the hands of the public. Ultimately, this system replaces exploitation with a cooperative community of free producers, distributing wealth according to the principle of individual ability and need.

Scholars define Marxism as the analytical tool used to critique capitalism, whereas they view communism as the actual socio-political structure created to replace it.

I’ve met my own fair share of communists, in my friend group there’s 11 communists. The main joke being Itaukei people can’t be communists.…

They’ve all been influenced into communism by social media, and only two have actually read theory!

A common theme in a survey

About a week ago, my group of 7 did a survey in school. Among all questions presented to the students, a common theme appeared: dislike towards the current PM and approval of the former authoritarian state of Fiji.

With the rise of social media, children are getting more and more radicalised. Though the Fijian world hasn’t fully adapted to the culture of social media they have developed a digital identity. The recent civic and political tension, especially since 2022 has caused many of the youth to disapprove the current government and express a strong dislike towards the current PM, Sitiveni Rabuka.

Fijian Youth

A large number of my social circle are political, identifying themselves with multiple different and very contrasting ideologies. (One is even a Stalinist!) one of my closet friends, lets call him S, was recently talking to me about nationalism in Fiji, and how ethnonationalism is dominant is itaukei circles. He is a radical Itaukei who has many strong opinions of things and has often taken traits from political ideologies to form his own “political ideology”

It’s nice to have a personal ideology but he isn’t a ethnonationalist unlike the elderly part of his family. And the more I thought about it, the more I realised that many Itaukei people who are exposed to western ideologues often don’t develop ideas of nationalism. Patriotism sure but not ethnonationalism. I’ve talked about this to at least 18 of my itaukei brothers and sisters and none have associated themselves with ethnonationalism.

Suva housing location recommendations from locals/ other expats.

We are considering a move to Fiji with our preschoolers soon. Rental budget is not an issue as it's fully paid by the employer and has a high ceiling.

Per chat gpt Domain, Nases, tamavua and Laucala beach estate are ideal for us.

We are looking for a house with pool, yard, excellent construction, good schools, things to do for our children close by, expat community with access to groceries stores and cafe.

My wife will need to travel a lot and I don't drive soa place from where I can easily commute via taxi to keep my child busy is essential . Google maps make everything look so far and hard to make sense area wise. Is it typical to have a driver?

I welcome local tips on navigating kids lifestyles, location and things to keep in mind.

We are an international family and have lived in Bangladesh, Europe, Caribbean, India, etc so understand what it takes to adjust as an expat.

Thank you

Left wingers

For the past few years I’ve considered myself a left winger, leaning towards socialist or social democracy. Are other Fijians socialist or do they lean more capitalist? I’ll be shocked if a Fijian was a communist….

Travel Fiji Bati Rugby League

Hi,

Might be an odd question. I'm travelling to Fiji soon and would love to pick up some Fiji Bati Rugby League merchandise. Are there any recommendations as to where (in Nadi) I could find some?

Big fan of international rugby league, really want to see countries like Fiji come through and kick some arse on the global stage!

What lures should I use?

I’ll be fishing at Momi on an upcoming trip. I’m a total newbie to all of this, so I'm looking for some advice will these lures work for casting from shore?

I’ll be using a 5 piece, 11 foot medium heavy rod that can cast 3–6 oz lures. I have an SP Minnow up at the top for scale.

Thanks! :)

Craig Marlow the artist?

OK, total longshot, We stayed on Toberua Island and fell in love with a print in our room. Hotel told us the artist was Craig Marlow. Was able to track down a facebook profile in Suva, and sent a couple messages but no dice.

Anyone know Mr. Marlow or have contact information?

Thanks!

Thoughts on responsibility

Recently I’ve been thinking more about Fijian politics and I was speaking to one of my friends about it and he started talking about nationalism and whatnot, but the idea of responsibility came up and he said something along the lines that Fiji can’t take responsibility and needs the aid of others.

Now is this true? Well I think it’s fifty-fifty, the Fijian government desperately needs help from other countries (what my friend called adult countries) and is quite gradualist. My friend considers Fiji to have a culture of laziness and this extends to all parts of Fiji and thus Fiji, a “childish nation” needs “adult nations” to help it.

Honeymoon planning

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon and are set on Fiji. We are looking to book in either April or may next year for 8 days and have heard Denarau or Nadi are the best options to stay as we originally wanted to stay at the marriot in momi Bay but heard it's to isolated for day trips and activities? Anyone have any recommendations on resorts ideally adult only in these areas? (Sheraton/Hilton or sofitel?) Also activities and things we can do throughout the day would be greatly appreciated as we don't want to miss anything! Any fun recommendations or ideas from experience please let me know!

Fijian house prices are hectic

For what you get, seems extremely over priced. A old place in an out of way part of town is already a 1 million. You can get luxury villas in other parts of the world for half that.

Is this flow on effect from being so close to Austrailian hyper inflated property market?

How is Naisoso Island not wiped out during a hurricane?

The island sits about 4 feet higher than sealevel. I thought any king tide would swamp it.

Have any other tourists been accosted by religious groups after returning from Fiji?

I got back from Fiji a month ago, and since then I have been receiving correspondence via email and post from religious organisations. I am hedging my bets on one of the hostels providing my billing information to these groups.

Has anyone else encountered something similar?

Found: Special Signed Fiji Flag from Scotland Fiji Rugby Match in 2019 at Murrayfield with personal comments all over it

I found this Fiji flag that a kind lady gave to my 10 year old son at the Scotland Fiji rugby match in 2019 at Murrayfield.
I was sorting out his flag collection and found that it had a lot of personal comments on it and I need to return it to the rightful owner.
I am hoping someone will recognise the comments and be able to find the lady whose flag it is.
I have a couple of photos of the lady but do not want to post them on here without her permission.

Can anyone help?

‘Protect identity’ - The Fiji Times

A Common name, a common identity. A common thread that unites the multicultural communities that we've talk about in the same breathe when we talk about Fiji. All the coups, all the damage done, and all the efforts to reconcile years after the fact. Where and when do we cement the pain of the past and move forward together. A common name, a common identity, how best do we acknowledge the contributions of other ethnic groups who help developed this country that we are also so proud of? How best do we recognise the those of Rotuman, Samoan, Tongan, Solomon, European, Indian, Nepalese, Chinese, Korean, Tuvaluan, Banaban ancestry, who for generations have called Fiji Home, whom we've been been raised with, studied along side and worked in partnership with. More than a common name, a common identity for those of us lucky to call Fiji home, a common identity that unites us despite ethnicity, social status and hierarchy and beyond rugby.

A common identity and a shared name that reflects the warmth of Fiji.

Why not a common name? A common identity?
