中国学习 | Studying in China Studying in China Megathread - FH2026
If you've ever thought about studying in China, already applied, or have even already been accepted, you probably have a bunch of questions that you'd like answered. Questions such as:
- Will my profile be good enough for X school or Y program?
- I'm deciding between X, Y, and Z schools. Which one should I choose?
- Have you heard of school G? Is it good?
- Should I do a MBA, MBBS, or other program in China? Which one?
- I've been accepted as an international student at school Z. What's the living situation like there?
- What are the some things I should know about before applying for the CSC scholarship?
- What's interviewing for the Schwarzman Scholar program like?
- Can I get advice on going to China as a high school exchange student?
- I'm going to University M in the Fall! Is there anyone else here that will be going as well?
If you have these types of questions, or just studying in China things that you'd like to discuss with others, then this megathread is for you! Instead of one-off posts that are quickly buried before people have had a chance to see or respond, this megathread will be updated on a semiannual basis for improved visibility (frequency will be updated as needed). Also consider checking out r/ChinaLiuXueSheng.

中国生活 | Life in China Am I really entitled to severance if my employer has not paid my social insurance?
I have heard that I could be owed one month salary for each year my company has not paid my social insurance. I know for a fact that the agency I'm working for has not paid a dime. It sounds like I can resign immediately because of this as it violates labor law. Just seems too good to be true. I am already back home in England and don't plan to return for the upcoming year. I figure if I am going to resign regardless I might as well try to do this as they were awful to some of my coworkers with illegal penalties and threats
Has anyone gone through this or know someone who has?

经济 | Economy China’s Talent Revolution: The Threat Europe Still Underestimates
kathrynread.comFor the past few years, the dominant HR narrative about China has been remarkably consistent. Foreign executives are leaving. Chinese companies are localising. Opportunities for Western managers are disappearing (or even long gone).
There’s a lot of truth in that story, but it only tells half of it. The full picture is more nuanced, and considerably more important for anyone running an export business or a European manufacturing operation.
China’s talent revolution isn’t simply about replacing expatriates with local managers. It’s signalling something much bigger. Chinese companies are becoming global competitors at a pace that many European businesses still underestimate, and their changing approach to talent is one of the clearest indicators of where they’re heading next.

语言 | Language Is it well written? Help
Hello, I wanted to thank my thesis supervisor by giving him a postcard. He is Chinese and I wrote the postcard in English, since that is the only language that we have in common. I am from Mexico and never had the pleasure of learning Chinese before. So I looked up how to thank him in his language. But I have no idea if I did it correctly. Is this enough? Is it badly written? Thank you in advance. Sorry if I did something wrong

语言 | Language Translation of ethnonyms regarding Han people from specific places in China
So I am doing a translation of a Chinese academic article at the moment. It's about Han Studies, more generally anthropology. The author uses a lot of ethnonyms for different groups of people from different places of China. Does anyone know the rules of when to use the -(n)ese suffix or maybe some resources where I could look up specific ethnonyms? Things like 上海人,湖南人,广府人 are pretty easy to translate as they are pretty common and either just carry the suffix or have English translations that are based on the local language. But things like 江西人,沈阳人,or 湖北人 have me stumped. Can these carry the -(n)ese suffix? I never heard someone say Jiangxinese, Shenyangese, or Hubeinese before

历史 | History Why did Deng undertake the southern tour at such an old age?
Yes I know the economic reasons he did it, coz China's economy was stagnating after Tiananmen and Deng needed to set the ball rolling again.
I'm just finding it a bit hard to understand why an 87 year old politician who's already done all he can for the CCP and China, would then go all the way to Shenzhen, rather than just relaxing and living out the years of his life in relative peace. Like that's a age I'd link with relaxing and winding down, not bold political steps.

中国生活 | Life in China People living/studying/working in China — what's your honest experience? Please mention your city and what you do
Hi all. I'm planning a move to China for a master's degree and would love current, real experiences from people actually on the ground rather than travel-vlog impressions.
If you're up for sharing, please start your comment with:
- City:
- What you do: (student / working / other)
- How long you've been there:
- And then whatever you can share on:
- Food — eating out vs cooking, groceries, how easy it is with dietary preferences
- Cost of living — rent and a realistic monthly spend for your city
- Safety — day-to-day, and as a foreigner specifically
- Social life — making friends, dating, language barrier, expat vs local circles
- Daily life — apps, payments, banking, VPN, healthcare, anything you wish you knew before arriving
I'm from India, so if any fellow Indians are here, your perspective (especially on food and community) would be extra helpful — please mention it. But I'd genuinely love to hear from everyone, and honest negatives are as welcome as positives. Thanks!

语言 | Language Why continue to learn mandarin?
I need this post to vent and especially for some cultural ass kicking. At this moment I'm fighting very hard for motivation to keep learning mandarin. Im 2 years in with daily exercises. I am in china right now and I feel like no one really wants to talk to strangers like me beside the sporadic extroverted Didi driver. With my chinese In-laws I don't dare to talk very much because of this strict culture differences where you can't say shit directly. My wife always makes things up when I want to say no to something. Its always awkward. Today we drove to a beach, we are there for 20min enjoying the weather suddenly someone says "走“.. we have to leave again and no one knows why. This happens on a daily basis and feels very disempowering. It's my second time in china.
