Babou is an ocelot, not a serval. But they're both crepuscular.

33

u/Large_Cloud_1611 1d ago

Ocelot or ocenotalot, either way this is a lot of cat.

Better known as buyer’s remorse

102

u/LiteratureMindless71 1d ago

What's with the ears though? I haven't seen many and they all have had that pointy ear thing going on

389

u/Large_Cloud_1611 1d ago

All cat have pointy ears. Except elephants, who don’t have pointy ears because they are not cats.

60

u/Pissadvisor 1d ago

Same thing with bears

29

u/HoboArmyofOne 1d ago

Black bears have pointy ears 🤷

70

u/Pissadvisor 1d ago

Well they must be cats then

5

u/Legitimate_Glass_306 1d ago

Bears, lions, tigers… ALL CATS!!🤣

10

u/Naked-Jedi 1d ago

Lions ✔️ Tigers ✔️ Bears ✔️

Can I pet dat cat?

3

u/richincleve 1d ago

True.

I've NEVER seen a bear with elephant ears.

Not Scottish Folds

26

u/Naked-Jedi 1d ago

Well that's clearly a snake. You can tell by it's stripes.

4

u/ididntunderstandyou 1d ago

Does it unfold into an origami sheet ?

5

u/descipaul 1d ago

And fish

6

u/GooseMay0 1d ago

In what world are elephants not cats?

3

u/arglarg 1d ago

That's a useful distinction, I'll stop pzzz pzzz pzzz hippos

2

u/HighChinaman 1d ago

Because if elephants had pointy ears and could control them they'd be able to fly like Dumbo.

You might be thinking of caracal cats. They have the pointy pointy ears.

its not several cats, its just one

4

u/Metharos 1d ago

No it's just one cat you can see it there

6

u/Dense-Consequence-70 1d ago

Probably a Savannah cat, a serval/house cat hybrid?

Servals are not the same species as domestic house cats.

499

u/DeuceMandago 1d ago

well unfortunately he is in the house

129

u/RCalliii 1d ago

And he seems quite opinionated.

86

u/AnotherDamnTransAlt 1d ago

“Unfortunately”? I wish he was in my house.

47

u/popopotatoes160 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ehhh you really don't. This one looks like a full 100% serval. They're hard to keep in a house and have everyone be happy. One with the right personality with a cat wheel and a nice large outdoor enclosure is possible for people with money to spend who are really committed to the cat and less so towards their material possessions. They mix these with domestic cats to produce the savannah cat breed. The 50/50 hybrids (f1) can also be a real handful. My understanding is that the ones that could be more broadly considered "good" pets are usually f2-f4. The servals and f1s end up at wild cat sanctuaries with some regularity, some of them just can't be kept happy in a normal house.

If you ever consider a cat like this, make sure you know what you're getting into and find a breeder that has sanctuary quality habitats* for their full blood servals and a policy that they will take the cat back if you cannot keep it for whatever reason. You will spend thousands but that's really the only ethical way to purchase this breed. And even then there's some debate about the whole situation, the demand it creates that bad breeders will fill.

*that's not to say servals can't be in a house, it's mostly that they need the stimulation and exercise outdoors provides, so if the breeder doesn't have that it's a red flag

12

u/AnotherDamnTransAlt 1d ago

I’m pretty sure they’re illegal in most counties. I have no desire to actually have a wild cat for real, but I’d sure love to have one visit for a while.

3

u/popopotatoes160 1d ago

They're illegal in a lot of states too, but not all of the US so people still get them. Up until 2022 there were several states you could own big cats like tigers and lions.

7

u/Phraaaaaasing 1d ago

You mean up until 2022 there were serval states???

3

u/CovidDodger 1d ago

I love cats and have a life long love of cats and know how to read their body language/etc. An old dream of mine is to have an f1 or f2 savannah one day.

Felines of all kinds are such incredible creatures.

Maybe this cat isn’t supposed to be a house cat and better to live in nature outside?

u/Bong_Hit_Donor 1d ago

There are "F1 Servals" which means they are a hybrid of a Serval and a domestic cat

7

u/Tremplstiltskin 1d ago

I think they go all the way to F5 based on how many generations they've been bred with house cats

2

u/_-_-_-_-_-_-__-_-_-- 1d ago

So the F value is the amount of generations of Servals x Servals? What does the F stand for?

5

u/Bong_Hit_Donor 1d ago

Filial Generation. F1 F2 etc are successive generations

14

u/Dense-Consequence-70 1d ago

It’s likely a Savannah cat, a serval/house cat hybrid.

55

u/wearing_moist_socks 1d ago

...is it a cat?

Is it in a house?

Exactly.

NOW. You could say we don't know if it's a house. Could be an apartment. Or a condo.

But since we don't know, it's a cat in a house so it's a house cat

4

u/Ken_nth 1d ago

Me to the authorities during a house visit after they peeked in and saw my 100cm tall orange boy, who's currently eating the neighbour's dog

5

u/ARandomNiceKaren 1d ago

I'm gonna guess that the dog was small and yappy. Then, the Serval did us ALL a favor. (I hope it was delicious for the cat.)

u/NekulturneHovado 1d ago

I think people don't know how cats behave. My cats have always been wild and loved to bite me and play with my hand. They are curious and will try shit with you. It's funny for them (and good too, they need movement and training) but a small cat will bite or scratch you, while something like this will bite off your finger and cut a wrist vein or something, possibly killing you.

2

u/Reylend 1d ago

Why he maow?

4

u/z-vap 1d ago

Felidae is the entire cat family, defined by shared anatomy, carnivorous diets, and evolutionary traits. Servals, domestic cats, and big cats all belong to this same family.

Not the same species, but the same family, and subfamily.

2

u/EmperorGrinnar 1d ago

Tigers aren't house cats either, even if you keep them in a house.

u/lousybrowser 1d ago

That’s not a house cat, it’s a Serval or something

326

u/MomentNew4925 1d ago

Any cat is a house cat if they are in the house

12

u/rtennen 1d ago

Yet when the lion lived inside when she was a cub they call her a lion not a housecat

11

u/Bata600 1d ago
  • A house-lion

6

u/rtennen 1d ago

For 5 months yes. That we got her her own place

2

u/pb20k 1d ago

Council Wars!

6

u/ender4171 1d ago

If we are being pedantic, that is not technically correct (looking at you /u/Separate-Fly5165 ). "House cats", or domesticated cats are genus Felis and species Catus. Servals are genus Leptailurus and species Serval.

8

u/Separate-Fly5165 1d ago

Lighten up and have fun you fuddy duddy

3

u/ender4171 1d ago

Guilty as charged, lol!

3

u/Creepingdeath444 1d ago

yo, but what if a mouse goes outside? Does it become a rat? And if a rat is in the house, is it a mouse?

5

u/TheMaveCan 1d ago

Man, you can't go to bed dead! That shit would be redundant!

3

u/h1zchan 1d ago

If a rat is in the house, does the house become the Rathaus?

6

u/InternationalPut4093 1d ago

Dont they have to eat raw meat?

5

u/DrippyTheSnailBoy 1d ago

Yep. Cat food is contraindicated for servals.

The raw chicken/pork budget is gonna go cwazy for serval owners.

What a high pitched meow for such a large cat. Wow.

2

u/Lunar_ticket 1d ago

You gotta check how cheetahs make sounds

5

u/JonathanKuminga 1d ago

Likely a Savannah, which is a hybrid Serval x Domestic cat

11

u/Opening-Lettuce-3384 1d ago

Probably a Savannah? In NL at least servals are not allowed as pets. Don't know how that is abroad

22

u/Ghstfce 1d ago

Looks like a Serval to me. Savannah cats are the product of a Serval and a domestic cat breeding. Usually a little bit smaller with legs that are longer than a normal housecat, but not this long.

5

u/Straight-Bet1 1d ago

Literally the phrase that went through my head while watching this.

Possibly my favorite archer line, "You gotta get a tire swing, or a tree branch, something! That ocelot is DESPERATE for something to play with. It's like meow-schwitz in there!""

20

u/thisguyfightsyourmom 1d ago

Remember when there was a sub that showed cute ocelot photos, and they would get SOO mad when their posts hit /all and were flooded with Archer memes?

It's a wild cat called a serval. They require huge outdoor enclosures, whole-prey diet and exotic vets.

Nice try, but not a house cat.

16

Could be a Serval or an Ocelot. It also might be mixed with a house cat

3

u/I_Am_Zeelian 1d ago

There's a cat breed called Savannah which is a serval x domestic cross.

23

u/IcyVeterinarian8881 1d ago

Not a house-cat. Not a pet.

And frankly a very fucking stupid idea to keep as such.

8

u/Existing_Intern_4764 1d ago

I looked way too far to see this. I hope it’s a rescue or something. I feel bad for the kitty if not. Those cats deserve to be out living their best life outside. And absolutely cannot be a typical ‘domestic outdoor cat,’ you can’t just let them out, they will native wild shit up.

I mean, domestic cats fuck up native wildlife too, but people don’t seem to care about that.

Give me a Bengal any day, they are wild enough for me.

Omg, obviously OP knows it's not a house cat!

1

u/Dense-Consequence-70 1d ago

I’m surprised no one seems to have heard of a Savannah cat. It’s a serval/house cat hybrid said to make good pets if you can afford them ($10k-$50k), but they are illegal in some states.
