Servals are not the same species as domestic house cats.

Ehhh you really don't. This one looks like a full 100% serval. They're hard to keep in a house and have everyone be happy. One with the right personality with a cat wheel and a nice large outdoor enclosure is possible for people with money to spend who are really committed to the cat and less so towards their material possessions. They mix these with domestic cats to produce the savannah cat breed. The 50/50 hybrids (f1) can also be a real handful. My understanding is that the ones that could be more broadly considered "good" pets are usually f2-f4. The servals and f1s end up at wild cat sanctuaries with some regularity, some of them just can't be kept happy in a normal house.
If you ever consider a cat like this, make sure you know what you're getting into and find a breeder that has sanctuary quality habitats* for their full blood servals and a policy that they will take the cat back if you cannot keep it for whatever reason. You will spend thousands but that's really the only ethical way to purchase this breed. And even then there's some debate about the whole situation, the demand it creates that bad breeders will fill.
*that's not to say servals can't be in a house, it's mostly that they need the stimulation and exercise outdoors provides, so if the breeder doesn't have that it's a red flag

I’m pretty sure they’re illegal in most counties. I have no desire to actually have a wild cat for real, but I’d sure love to have one visit for a while.

u/popopotatoes160 1d ago
They're illegal in a lot of states too, but not all of the US so people still get them. Up until 2022 there were several states you could own big cats like tigers and lions.

I love cats and have a life long love of cats and know how to read their body language/etc. An old dream of mine is to have an f1 or f2 savannah one day.
Felines of all kinds are such incredible creatures.

Maybe this cat isn’t supposed to be a house cat and better to live in nature outside?

u/Bong_Hit_Donor 1d ago
There are "F1 Servals" which means they are a hybrid of a Serval and a domestic cat
→ More replies (3)7
u/Tremplstiltskin 1d ago
I think they go all the way to F5 based on how many generations they've been bred with house cats
2
u/_-_-_-_-_-_-__-_-_-- 1d ago
So the F value is the amount of generations of Servals x Servals? What does the F stand for?

...is it a cat?
Is it in a house?
Exactly.
NOW. You could say we don't know if it's a house. Could be an apartment. Or a condo.
But since we don't know, it's a cat in a house so it's a house cat

Me to the authorities during a house visit after they peeked in and saw my 100cm tall orange boy, who's currently eating the neighbour's dog
5
u/ARandomNiceKaren 1d ago
I'm gonna guess that the dog was small and yappy. Then, the Serval did us ALL a favor. (I hope it was delicious for the cat.)

I think people don't know how cats behave. My cats have always been wild and loved to bite me and play with my hand. They are curious and will try shit with you. It's funny for them (and good too, they need movement and training) but a small cat will bite or scratch you, while something like this will bite off your finger and cut a wrist vein or something, possibly killing you.

That’s not a house cat, it’s a Serval or something

Any cat is a house cat if they are in the house

u/ender4171 1d ago
If we are being pedantic, that is not technically correct (looking at you /u/Separate-Fly5165 ). "House cats", or domesticated cats are genus Felis and species Catus. Servals are genus Leptailurus and species Serval.

yo, but what if a mouse goes outside? Does it become a rat? And if a rat is in the house, is it a mouse?

u/InternationalPut4093 1d ago
Dont they have to eat raw meat?
5
u/DrippyTheSnailBoy 1d ago
Yep. Cat food is contraindicated for servals.
The raw chicken/pork budget is gonna go cwazy for serval owners.

Probably a Savannah? In NL at least servals are not allowed as pets. Don't know how that is abroad
22
u/Ghstfce 1d ago
Looks like a Serval to me. Savannah cats are the product of a Serval and a domestic cat breeding. Usually a little bit smaller with legs that are longer than a normal housecat, but not this long.

Possibly my favorite archer line, "You gotta get a tire swing, or a tree branch, something! That ocelot is DESPERATE for something to play with. It's like meow-schwitz in there!""

Remember when there was a sub that showed cute ocelot photos, and they would get SOO mad when their posts hit /all and were flooded with Archer memes?

It's a wild cat called a serval. They require huge outdoor enclosures, whole-prey diet and exotic vets.
Nice try, but not a house cat.

Not a house-cat. Not a pet.
And frankly a very fucking stupid idea to keep as such.

I looked way too far to see this. I hope it’s a rescue or something. I feel bad for the kitty if not. Those cats deserve to be out living their best life outside. And absolutely cannot be a typical ‘domestic outdoor cat,’ you can’t just let them out, they will native wild shit up.
I mean, domestic cats fuck up native wildlife too, but people don’t seem to care about that.

100% not a house cat. These are not domesticated. They are wild cats. Do not buy servals.

I would LOVE that cat like its never been loved before. I used to have a bengal cat and theyre incredibly intelligent creatures. I would love one of these.
For the record i wouldn't actually own one... theyre not a house cat. They need to be outdoors and not domesticated imo.

My boss had an fq savannah. (Bengal/serval cross) biggest AH ever, they need tons of room, tons of toys and they cost hundreds a month to feed.
Give me a Bengal any day, they are wild enough for me.

I’m surprised no one seems to have heard of a Savannah cat. It’s a serval/house cat hybrid said to make good pets if you can afford them ($10k-$50k), but they are illegal in some states.
