šŸ“ŗWatch Messi( 39 years) breaking ankles of both Harry Kane and Bellingham who are in their Prime

He is the leading scorer and assists in the WC, absolutely mental. Ppl wonder why we call GOAT. Vamos Argentina, one more WC Leo. Imagine being so good, they call it "rigged" and " fixed".

Sry got the names wrong, idk who the other guy is.

Everything below my hip would shatter or tear if I tried to move like Messi. As a casual watching his first WC, it's crazy to see that guy work.

Regardless of age, his performance this entire World Cup has been utterly stunning. This could've been done by a 25 year old and even then it wouldn't have been ''normal,'' it would've been met with a lot of praise too.

So it makes it even more special when you do factor in his age. Because its really not normal to do this at 39. I grew up with Zidane retiring at 34. Ronaldinho was basically not the same anymore after 28. Cristiano Ronaldo was 37 in 2022 and got benched in the knock-out stage.

I've seen Messi play in 2005 for the first time during the under 21 youth World Cup. Seen him do outrageous things throughout his career and somehow he still manages to surprise me. I wasn't expecting this level of performance, or a spot in the final.

31

u/SuddenBasil7039 1d ago

Funny you mention Zidane because this world cup performance has been really reminiscent of his 06 tournament, watching a great roll back the years and embarrass players in their prime

Lets just hope Laporte doesnt decide to insult his sister in the final

It's not normal, its a long way from normal.

I'm just a casual fan of this sport, but with sports in general you don't see this. Hes been doing it for over 2 decades and already the greatest ever, to still be performing at this level at 39. It defies logic.

I saw someone put it in comparison:

Imagine Maradona competing with R9 and Zidane in 1998, Ronaldo being the star over Neymar in and competing with Muller/Messi in 2014, Ronaldinho playing and leading Brazil in the 2018 WC competing with Mbappe.

All of those players would actually be younger than Messi currently is in 2026.

The best thing Pep ever taught Messi was in-game load management. The longevity and explosiveness of this guy is crazy.

140

u/mbashs 1d ago

Not a fan of Argentina but always loved to see Messi play. The ball control and making all the other players dance to his tune is just incredible, especially at this age.

33

u/Shady420xv England 1d ago

His dribbling really is incredible to watch, MSN was probably my favourite Trio to watch, the way they worked together was incredible and Messi's dribbling/playmaking really shined during those years.

Someone really had the audacity to say Harry Kane isn't in his prime when he has scored 72 goals this season of which 6 goals this world cup I believe (not sure how they differentiate them). Oh yeah and he won the Bundesliga a second time. Like what are we even saying just to undermine what a 39 year old man is doing.

Imagine he wasn’t 100 years old. He would be laughing at them…. Tbh even at 100 years old he is probably laughing at them

28

u/ExaminationFlat9862 1d ago

In 2nd half, Messi’s touch on the ball was just ridiculous. You can clearly tell he’s lost a step but to lose a step and be THAT impactful is ridiculous

10

u/HIEROYALL 1d ago

He’s still so much sharper than all the players around him, legs just don’t move the same...

In the second half, the amount of passes that Ā his teammates squandered was unreal

u/Ok-Revolution-645 World Cup 1d ago

Is the video sped up or is he really that quick??

19

u/LongjumpingPilot8578 1d ago

I’ve heard from interviews with players moving up to Pro how fast everything happens. Separately, World Class elite players talk about Messi’s quickness. Put that all together and, no this is not sped up. This is Messi- well past his prime.

15

u/SuperZayin12 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s zoomed in from a distance so the camera appears to move a lot faster than it actually is. But yeah he is very fast

16

u/Wesstes 1d ago

I can't spot anything that moves abnormally fast in the video, he fell at a normal speed too

13

u/Double_Suggestion385 1d ago

Long lens effect makes him look faster against the background.

Not sped up but creates the illusion of being sped up.

5

u/azrael_lihkin 1d ago

Maradona said about Messi he’s the only players he’s ever seen who runs faster with the ball than without it…

He's absolutely insane for a 39 year old. Still one of the best in the world.

27

u/Ok_Following_3174 20h ago

The way he shields the ball against Kane, who's twice his size, is incredible. Kane literally goes flying.

13

u/mattlloyd_18 20h ago

Messi’s centre of gravity has been no joke for decades. There’s a reason he is the best ever

9

u/Ok_Following_3174 20h ago

Many players who faced him have mentioned it—his incredible leg strength. They could never knock him off the ball.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/ShockOlate14 19h ago

it’s the leg to torso ratio that makes such a huge difference in Messis favour. He has a decently long torso for his size with tiny legs which means that he’s capable of holding off taller players whilst having far better balance and quicker movement.

49

u/thisisBigToe Netherlands 1d ago

To be fair, a Messi in his prime would have bagged a hattrick yesterday.

17

u/Hopeful_Expression57 1d ago

I was genuinely so amazed by what he was doing yesterday. Consistently creating chamces successfuly, assisted both goals, the second goal almost goes entirely to him. And my most favourite part of yesterday's match was his dribbling. Words can't describe how ecstatic it was to see him dribbling through english defense and consistently beating them, and creating another record for the most successful dribbles by any player in a aingle match. BY A 39 YEAR OLD IN HIS LAST WORLD CUP AGAINST ONE OF THE BEST MIDFIELDER OF THIS GENERATION.

Messi is somewhat lucky to have a team that notoriously doesn't give up. Even if they get scored on, they never get blown out, which helps Messi in the latter part of the game when moments become more decisive. Messi conserves most of his energy until the 60th or 70th minute, and that's when he really wakes up. Amazing to see really.

15

u/Sneshie 1d ago

I think he inspires a lot of that energy. Imagine playing alongside the best player in history. It could either be the most nerve wracking or inspiring feeling in the world depending on the attitude they show towards the team. It does feel like Messi collaborates with the team in a way that makes them wanna perform in front of their idol.

Idk, just my head canon.

Argentina can still compete without Messi, but they will not have the same level of threat because they are losing a great player who can change the outcome of tight matches.

The next World Cup will be a major test for Argentina. From being a favorite to becoming a contender is different.

Unless Messi decides to keep playing until he is 43. Which would be another unbelievable chapter in football history. šŸ˜‚

The Messi that Europeans said was too old and washed to play there and laughed at him for joining the MLS.

43

u/dakowiml 1d ago

I've been following his career since 2005. This is how it's gone:

''Messi is nothing without Xavi and Iniesta.''

''He will be nothing without Guardiola.''

''He can't cope with physicality.''

''He's fat.''

''He can't do it in another team.''

''He is invisible against English teams'' (this was said when he was still young and hadn't scored yet against English teams. He ended up scoring almost as much (in the CL) as C. Ronaldo had done as a player in the PL. With far fewer games than Ronaldo).

''Not the GOAT without success with his country.''

''He is NOT a leader. His Argentina teammates couldn't care less about him. He delivers them nothing.''

''Wait, its rigged. No wait he's washed. No wait, it's rigged? Yeah, its rigged!''

He will forever ,until I die , be my hero. He is what we all aspired to be as a footballer and it's beautiful to see everyone's dream become a reality even if we just witnessing his greatness

It's pure frustration/anger/annoyance that England were forced to sit off the ball after scoring the goal, having played well up to that point.... Messi had a field day from that point forward and the game was only ever going to end one way - Argentina could have easily scored 4 or 5 goals.... What a shitshow from the manager.

The last goal itself shows everything. Ball hit the post and rolls out of the box. And a 39 year old is the one showing the burst of speed, alertness and just pure desire more than any other player. And this is coming from the guy who have practically won everything in this sport already, he can treat this world cup like a retirement tour and noone can blame him.Ā

You can't play scared and submissive against Messi. That was England's mistake in the second half. They went into full defensive mode because they were afraid of Argentina, even though they were already leading 1–0.

6

u/dzan796ero 1d ago

The second half of the game was the most comfortable and composed Argentina has looked for the entire competition. Usually crazy saves late in the game draw a veil of despair over attackers but there was none of that today. I think Argentina actually gained back a lot of the stamina they have been burning over the past few rounds

7

u/Rare-Imagination-373 1d ago

They were tired as well. They knew it was a match of the century.....at 70min, their coach should’ve changed some members......in defence and midfield..... Argentina are known to do their max at those exact time.... reinforcing strength was necessary.

Plus argentina coach changed 5 of their players....so half of their team still had 100% full capacity.

Messi’s legs are like watching a video on 2x, while the rest of players are stuck on 1x speed.

16

u/Sight_Distance 1d ago

Big dudes like Jude and Harry might win a long distance sprint, but that quickness and agility of the smaller players cannot be matched. Messi just so happens to have mastered everything and uses his size to his advantage. He kept the ball through numerous challenges near the box and sent wave after wave of near perfect crosses in - matter of time until they connect a goal or two.

Messi doesn’t have a game who rely on speed like MbappĆ© for example so he can be older in the sport and perform well

2 FIFAs ago, they were saying that it would be Messi's last FIFA at peak performance, and yet here we are. I guess medicine must have also greatly advanced, because the retirement age used to be 32.

You can see the ball and Messi's legs being remotely controlled by someone from FIFA.

38

u/baronfebdasch 1d ago

Or the odd narrative that all of Messi’s game is taking dives and drawing penalties. Dude does not dive

20

u/PeruAndPixels 1d ago

He really doesn’t. You see him taking tough tackles and often trying to push through them.

This is crazy, bro.

Serious, I'm brazilian, but i have to say that in my opinion Messi really surpassed PelƩ now as the king.

If he wins another World Cup against a better team with Argentina sunday, then i would say this gets unquestionable. He would have the same two world cups titles as PelƩ (if we count the ones they really played, since PelƩ only played some time in the first match in 1962, got injured and then Brazil won it even without PelƩ), and the 2014 final. Three whole best World Cup's player too (i think it's a fact now that he win it again for this edition).

What make me think this is, especially, the fact that Messi did all this with a national team that clearly fully depended on him, had its limitations and clearly wasn't on the first tier of contenders to win these 3 world cups i mentioned. PelƩ was crazy in his world cups too, especially 1958 when Brazil wasn't even a world cup champion yet and we had the Maracanazzo trauma, but as i said in 1962 Brazil won even without him which show how crazily strong Brazil was back then even without him. I can't see Argentina even getting to the semifinals in 2014, 2022 or 2026 without Messi.

15

u/Ron__P 1d ago

Like Pele he will have won his World Cups when not at his peak.

It's sad Pele was injured in 1962 and 1966, he was far ahead of everyone.

It’s Messi, it’s very difficult to put a muzzle on him even he is past his barca days. Very few teams have defended well against him and even when they did, they had to put so many ressources in doing so they created space and problems elsewhere. That is why Argentina don’t need Messi to defend. He does however need the ball, so I suspect that Spain’s system will work well in that regard

Notice how he lifts the ball above the leg before the last tackle. This is insane.

u/Headlessoberyn 1d ago

Lol people in the comments debating over prime being one or two years apart from jude and kane's age... i don't think that's the point really, i think the point is that there's a 40 years old goblin putting professional players in his pocket and being the anchor of an otherwise mess of a team.

5

u/TheBSQ 1d ago

MLS forced him to up his game. Euro-poors can’t keep up no more.

As a Lakers fan, this is familiar territory.

We been watching 80 years old LeBron do this to everyone more often the past two years when he goes for dunks. When he goes to the rim, defenders still think twice about stopping the truck that he can be.

What’s that saying? Beware an old man in a profession where men die young?

Anyone in the world would have gone down twice against Kane and it would not be considered a dive. And yet Messi stood his ground. It's amazing how some people can call Messi a cheat for diving.Ā

Even as a neutral, you cant help but be amazed at what this man can do. He decided he was going to provide as many chances as he can for his teammates to score..and they didn't let him down. He was constantly finding dangerous passes. How can someone be the best goal scorer and yet the greatest play maker when its required of him
