Our "best" player was cut from his high school team (2 schools at the time) as a junior. His dad was an attorney but fortunately told his son no suit lol
Like my former best friend who coulda been in the NBA except for "politics"! 5"8' white kid couldn't even make the JV team and in his 30s still believes this nonsense. Like I played soccer and baseball and was "good" (played in college) and was faster, stronger, taller, and could jump higher than him and am fully aware I was never going to get a paycheck playing sports but had to hear this story a couple times a year.
Before we stopped being friends I showed him clips of Kobe and Lebron in High School and just said "but the coach had it out for you?"
Bro, these dudes with these delusions of grandure can be the worst. Especially since they are usually using these stories as an excuse for their lives being shit.
99% of the population didn't get to be the things we dreamed of when we were kids. I wanted to be a rock star, played my ass off in a bunch of bands and was pretty good. I also made sure I had a career I was working on in case it didn't work out cause I know people that are natural musicians that play several instruments at a high level and write great music that wash dishes at restaurants in their late 40s... I also know people that have never been in a band and can barley play an instrument that have these stories about how they would have made it if it wasn't for that singer that didn't show up to the big gig!!
Same damn energy and it gets fucking old, fast. And its never their fault things didn't work out. It was always, as your friend said, "politics" or somw other nonsense

Fast forward to this kids baseball career crapping out in high school and turning into either a cop or town drunk
