His 40 year old, 5'6" ass was beating these early 20's, 6'4" to all the 50/50 balls and the putting his crosses on a dime. While they were couldn't get their crosses off the ground.
He just wanted it more.
37
u/SaltShakr 1d ago
He was pocketed before the first goal. It wasn't until Tuchels terrorist plan which involved 8 people in the box and absolutely no one pressing the wide players that they could spray the box. Messis crosses were incredible, but he didn't even have to break a sweat to get them in
15
u/thegoodvm 1d ago
I wouldnt call that getting pocketed, that's just how it usually plays when it comes to him (both his playstyle and how opponents are usually more wary of him at the beginning of the match than later)

u/Brilliant-Map2492 1d ago
He starts playing like a 10, then reads the game and plays whichever position is required. In this case he became a right winger.

u/United_Engine_5719 1d ago
Yeah and its almost always after the 2nd hydration break when he switches to the right. Love to see it
11
u/Long_Refuse365 1d ago
imagine saying a guy who had 10 successful dribbles, 2 big chances created, 4 key passes and 2 assists was pocketed at any point in the game. Messi's standards are that high.

u/Texas_Shepard 1d ago
Yamal has just as good dribbling stats or almost and everyone calling him washed.

u/Daanfunger 1d ago
argentina dominated england for the whole second half. when you see the "match momentum chart" they had the advantage even at the moment that england scored
→ More replies (1)4
u/compute_fail_24 1d ago
Yep, even when England went ahead I said to my spouse I thought Argentina was dominating and the statistics would catch up. How many headers did they have that just went right at the keeper or just to the side of the goal. This game could have easily been 4-1.

Messi always looked pocketed until suddenly he wasnt. Blink and argentina is on the board
2
u/ProfessorTraft 1d ago
Everyone forgot about Tucheliban because they played attacking football against weaker teams. Bro lived up to his namesake as soon as they met someone in their league
2
u/DueExample52 1d ago
Also on the goal, a little overlooked fact is thar Spence had slightly hurt himself in the box and took time to recover and run outside, so nobody was on Messi until he got closer and had time to evaluate and perfect his cross unchallenged.

u/Rasputinsball 1d ago
Yeah very "pocketed"

This is the only dribble he made in the first 50 minutes and it amounted to absolutely nothing. Stop watching the games through reddit

15 minutes to go they put the pressure on and Uk gave up 2. Hate him all you want but they earned that one.

TBH they put the pressure on all of second half. Well deserved victory. Happy to see UKs ultra defensive strategy post 1-0 didn't pay off.

Why are you calling England the UK?
Itās easy to remember:
England lost a football match to Argentina.
Argentina lost an invasion to the UK.

There really is no debate. Heās the greatest to ever play the game.
39 years old and he single handedly takes the momentum on his shoulders and gets two assists. Despite England doing their best to gift it, he looked dangerous every time the ball went near him.

I think the dislike (to the whole argentinian team really) comes a lot from the unfair referee decisions.

Not single handedly, Enzo was brilliant and was a big factor in it. Argentina as a whole were, but they play to get the best out of him and it shows.
Enzoās goal was brilliant though

Agreed. Pelé is the actual goat. Beckenbauer is more influential. Same as Neuer. Gerd is the best striker of All time. And Thomas Müller is the Messi Kryptonite. Messi one once in 8 Duelle the two had. Messi performs bad against Thomas Müller

Yes, he is, but having a second WC would silence some of the older Argentinians that claim Diego is.

I don't think they'll burn - definitely a drop off from 3 world cup finals in the past 4 tournaments, but they'll get back to it again as they did before.
They won 2 before he arrived, so the country clearly has history of producing talent, so I'm sure there's a few Argentinian kids out there who's names we'll know quite well in 8 or 12 years.

Doubt. Will they be number 1, unlikely. But Argentina still have talent, and will likely still be around the top 10-15 teams like they have for almost their entire duration before Messi.

3 finals in 4 world cup. Do you understand that? Insane!

From a sheer odds perspective, in a single game elimination tournament, that is actually incredibly insane. The stats on that must be wild.

When messi assisted 1st goal - he was offside, FIFA didn't even show a replay or any check for offside.
When messi assisted 2nd goal - he first stepped on England's defender, Spence. Again, no VAR check, close replay, anything. For the same situation, Egypt got their goal disallowed.
Rigging is so obvious, this is getting pathetic. I am not even talking about how aggressive Argentina played the whole game, they should have had 2 red cards. Simeone massaged Spencer's eye from inside with his finger but nothing was done.

Bro single handedly assisted every goal by Argentina. I think the talk with Bellingham during the half time riled him up and then there was no turning back. Many have already said this before, you do not mess with Messi, he will turn on a beast mode that wouldnāt like to see. And mind you, he is close to double the age of many young players around him, but he beat them at their youth and stamina.

I don't even like that team. Some of the players play dirty and are arrogant. but the ones that play well- play with a lot of passion and run very fast. The English were tired by the second half and did not have the same passion. The Argentine team can light up on fire at any random time usually by the end lol

6-7 game tournament, not that importantā¦. /s
People love to go credit Ronaldos mentality as if he was perfect in that sense, I think itās the opposite. It ended up hurting hin in the latter stages of his career. Messis mentality and how he captains this Argentina team are incredible.

Heās an amazing player but his attitude is awful, along with the rest of his team. To me, heās not celebrating for himself there heās goading the losing team, like so many of his teammates did.
His blatant fouls during the game were disgraceful. If this is his last World Cup he could have shown class, for me he hasnāt. The way he bosses around the referees is also shocking.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the GOAT. Iāve heard people saying Messi is so much better than Ronaldo this tournament. Of course he is! Ronaldo is 41. Messi 39. People told me hitting 40 is like a switch being flipped and your body starts changing. I didnāt believe it. It didnāt hit me at 40. It hit at 41. I feel itās the same for Ronaldo. Itās sad to see such an amazing player come to the end of his career.

I means more to him because his legacy will be remembered and not of his team mates who on paper have the same number of international trophies. GOAT debate with 2 world cups titles is stronger than with one world cup when others have more.
