Video A Class Act: Mbappe is just laughing at the ridiculous hostilities he faced against Paraguay

I'm pretty sure the World Cup is just becoming more open with their dirty laundry is all. The refs are probably picked by how "cooperative" they are with management.
4
u/AI_moderated_failure 12d ago
I don't know. I feel bad that ref has clearly had his cane and glasses stolen by football hooligans :(
22
u/Quirky_Dog5869 12d ago
Well the WNBA is giving some masterclasses on how to ref blindly. They've got hours and hours of footage doing this eith Caitlyn Clarke.

WNBA refs were happily doing thier job poorly while no one payed any attention until she came along.

Terrible sportsmanship from Paraguay, shameful
188
u/shalkyer 12d ago
And terrible ref. Paraguay was doing that all the time and got literally zero yellow cards. Zero. In one half alone Mbappe was held and pushed, and then even punched (what could be even a red), and no real reaction from the ref.
50
25
u/SergeantSmash 12d ago
That punch on his chest was 100% intentional and should've gotten a yellow for sure for that onr, but refs were blind I guess.
32
u/de_Generated 12d ago
Intentional punch = red card, that's the rule. It doesn't even matter if the punch did any real damage, even an attempt at something like this is a red card.
Honestly I feel like there was some kind of manipulation going on. Maybe the ref or someone close to the ref bet on Paraguay not receiving any cards, because even a bad ref can't miss so many obvious fouls.
10
u/sledgehammerrr2 12d ago
Someone bet a lot of money on Paraguay
5
u/Zealousideal_Leg_630 11d ago
The spread was 1.5. Gave France the win, so as not to upset a giant yet still made sure they didn’t cover it
3
u/DueExample52 12d ago
The whole day had some bad and biased refereeing. Canada vs Morocco had the opposite trend, too many yellows, and the same foul immediately carded for Morocco but not for Canada literally minutes apart.

And the kick out on Mbappe from the player who already stamped on Dembele while trying to mess the PK spot up, while Dembele was standing on the PK spot to protect it.
Dude should have seen two yellows and then a red.
3
u/Z0idberg_MD 12d ago
This would’ve been relatively easy to stamp out. For example in this specific clip, the ref could’ve walked up and gave a warning and said anything like that again you get a yellow card, and then after the first yellow the temperature drops.
It’s also crazy how much the Paraguay bench was surrounding the fourth official. They should’ve handed out cards for that as well.

It’s more the ref’s fault. You guys are expecting Paraguay to play at France’s level. They were outclassed in every aspect coming to the game. They are playing to get to quarter finals, the biggest accomplishment for every Paraguayan player and for the confederation as well, it is expected that they go and do whatever they can to win, it is the ref’s job to enforce his authority and control the aggressiveness of the match. He was too permissive and the game got out of his hands.
But you guys cannot expect Paraguay to just play 1 to 1 with France. They are a very inexperienced team in important matches. Terrible job by the ref and FIFA overall

Soccer needs to make fighting a legal (yet penalized) part of the game like hockey. I prefer the attitude of "sure you can cheap shot me and annoy me and shove your hand in my face, but if you push it you're gonna have to answer for it like a man". Watching this made me parasympathetically wish to see the offending players uppercutted. What pussies.

Even if you just watched them this World Cup then you haven't been paying enough attention. They played like this the entire cup and they are the first ones to ever get a red card for covering your mouth during a heated exchange (presumably to say racist shit). This team showed how scummy they were right from the offset of the tournament.

What a waste of a top 16 game. Centering your defense tactic around fouling or antagonizing Mbappe is a low class move. Would rather have watched Germany v France.

Agreed. Antagonising and deliberate niggly fouls are annoying but part of the game but this was way too far. Just not football anymore. Don’t think anyone should be proud of it. It’s just missing the point of sport. And any decent ref would’ve sent some of them off and ended the contest fairly soon.

u/Humble-Lime-420 12d ago
What a waste of a world cup spot. Paraguay should be ashamed of the way their team played. And the ref shouldn't be in this line of work if he can't do his job. You're telling me he was one of the best in the world?

Mbappé is really clever doing that. You tell the rival they are not going to get you and you also calm yourself down by laughing which fights the violent instincts I'm sure he had (because I would too).
21
u/rumnscurvy 12d ago
Zidane's headbutt may be 20 years old but you can be sure everyone on the French side remembers it, coaches included. The team undoubtedly brought up this eventuality and agreed to this kind of strategy in order for it to not happen again.

u/Imrichbatman92 11d ago
Its clear DD and the staff really prepared the team for it.
Its not just mbappe, the entire team took all the roughness and shithousery in stride (barcola too was laughing when they tried to rile him up, olise just smiled at his absurd yellow...), Dembelé acted as if he was going to shoot the Pk and protected the spot to let kyky focus more serenely (though i can't believe the paraguyan players fell for it seemed obvious mbappe was always going to shoot it), and at the end DD preempted any potential fight just in case.
That was imo a masterclass from the entire staff and teams, everyone knew how paraguay would play and we dealt with it pretty much perfectly.
The one bad spot really was the ref... I can't believe he almost didn't give the pen lmao

Can someone explain why they behaved like this?
14
u/beatbox9 12d ago edited 12d ago
If you don't watch often: this was a deliberate tactic by Paraguay. Their coaches told them to do this.
They knew that France was the more skillful side, so their strategy was to annoy and piss the French off and try to throw them off their game, by pushing the boundaries between physicality and fouls.
Which is apparently easy to do with a clueless, unintelligent ref. Especially when you remember that a ref's job is not only to enforce the rules but to ensure the safety of the players--most of the rules about fouls center around player safety. This ref is an embarrassment to the sport.
Ideally, Paraguay was trying to get the French to foul them back harder and get a player or two sent off so that they would have a decent chance against France, because they couldn't win on skill since the French is a much more skillful team. Like a little child who keeps poking their older sibling until their sibling snaps. Speaking of: this video should be posted to r/KidsAreFuckingStupid because of how childish Galarza (#23) is there (and was the entire match).
There's nothing wrong with physicality; but Paraguay--especially Galarza--crossed that border several times. Most competent refs would have carded Paraguay for several of the more egregious fouls and increased the frequency of the cards to calm things down.
The French countered this beautifully though. I have no doubt their coaches knew in advance and told them that Paraguay would try this tactic and to keep their cool no matter what. Mbappe's smile there is part of his counter tactic: he's basically annoying Paraguay back. Smiling in their face while beating them. He was probably saying something along the lines of "sorry you lost. sorry I'm better than you and I scored on you and you're going home as losers soon." That's not "class" so much as it is a sarcastic escalation tactic. And it's hilarious.
I'm glad the French didn't shake Paraguay's hands; and I'm glad the French coaches immediately ran out to separate their team so that they didn't get any infractions after they won.
And I'm glad Paraguay is out after that. It was nice to see the French smiling and laughing and celebrating while Paraguay was hiding in their shirts crying.
