This is why I don't watch movies... In case I accidentally watch a 'good' one and come away with a 'positive experience' 🤢

Hmmm at what point does a movie get so many negative reviews that it becomes cool enough to like it? And then when do I act like I dont like it when it gets too popular again?

6

u/mr_pineapples44 7h ago

I feel like however many dislikes either "The Love Guru" (the underappreciated gem) or "The Master of Disguise" (the cult classic) has. Those are the only two films that should be watched by anyone trying to avoid qualityslop.

Some people only feel satisfaction from hating things and letting others know that they hate them. They will take time and energy out of their miserable lives to let others know. It’s strange but seems to be true to some extent.

u/LogicalInfo1859 7h ago

My sociology prof. (it was some quarter-century ago) called that 'necrophilia'. Her example were people who first open papers to see who died or what bad happened.

Doomscrolling really isn't a new phenomenon.

I’m sorry but ā€œquality slopā€ is hilarious. It sounds like something someone who strictly watches avant garde French indie movies would say.

42

u/LunarGiantNeil 7h ago

Just another by the numbers movie hitting all the expected notes. Dime a dozen masterpieces that cannot begin to reflect the true depravity and failure of modern society. The human condition requires 16mm black and white bolex kino to really EXPRESS. Didn't even have a boom mic dip in frame. 10/10 which means it's unwatchable gold.

Every movie is qualityslop because, for good or ill, somebody will enjoy watching anything. Ironically or no.

The only solution is to outlaw movies entirely.

u/SolidusDave 5h ago edited 4h ago

there's some nuance to this. At least when the number of reviews is high so bots etc.Ā  are diluted out a bit.Ā

  • Critics high and audience (very) low usually means it's pretentious/artsy Oscar bait and either very boring or very weird for the general audience.Ā

For me,Ā  it's a very risky watch.

  • Critics low and audience high means it's usually an entertaining popcorn movie and/or you will like it if you are fan of whatever franchise/ source material it's from.Ā

For me,Ā  usually a save watch.Ā

7

u/Raise_A_Thoth 1h ago

So I'm sort of the other side of that.

When I see high critic low audience I think "artistic choices were made, this will be a unique experience and there will be at least some craftsmanship and quality in some aspects of this film. Narratively, or thematically, there are likely to be risky choices that don't resonate with mainstream audiences. This is a movie I crave."

When I see low crit and high audience scores I agree with you that it's likely to be aimed at people who are already familiar with and like the premise and/or source material. Many MCU movies fall here. So do certain kinds of war and action films. Is the war film about war and the surrounding effects, or is it about a hero who saves the day for the Good Team and punishes the Bad Team? The former could be high crit - high aud OR high crit low aud depending on how critical they are of war itself, and the latter is more likely to be low crit high aud.

114

45

u/pancreasMan123 5h ago

A looooong time ago he actually reviewed movies and never commented on "woke" anything. He made the shift because it makes him money.

I watched the shitty action movie on YouTube based on his book and it commits many of the film "crimes" he talks shit about constantly.

He probably makes the joke about being an alcoholic because he needs to drown his sorrows knowing how much he had to sell his soul to be a far right grifter to become wealthy.

Id bet behind the camera, he doesnt believe a single thing he says in any YouTube video he's made in the last like 8 years.

18

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 5h ago

I believe it. The top Twitch streamer Asmongold is like this too, a guy who made interesting content, then became a huge grifter and definitely doesn't believe a fucking word out of his own mouth.

Pretty sure his mom dying fucked with him so bad he felt like he had to "be a successful adult"(even though he already was by most standards), but the only answer that came to his mind on what it means to be a successful adult is societies dumbass notion that wealth=success/a mans worth.

And grifting right now, to this crowd, is the easiest money you'll make.

Not sure if he's got a drug addiction yet, but I expect one before long. How much time can someone spend like this before they lose their sanity? Might end up killing themselves tbh, I'd be on the lookout for the headlines

To paraphrase Dick Jones from what I believe is a movie, ā€œWho cares if it’s right or not?ā€

He's gonna make a video disregarding everything that happen in the movie and just lie for 15 minutes.

61

u/EchoOneFour 5h ago

Bot farms reviewed it for max score on audience... It's probably harder to make a review as a critic account.. might need some checking from actual people to make an account like that

17

u/ThatUsernameWasTaken 3h ago

You need proof of purchase to review, too, which means someone bought a load of tickets for those bots. Basically the same as politicians buying tons of their own books with PAC money to get a best seller sticker.

It's the old strategy the US administration deploys when caught with their pants down, here they can say something like:

"The so-called professional reviewers, who by the way is taking money from fake news, are trying to pull us down. Look at the real numbers, the people, you just cant beat that."

Its so obvious at this point. I remember a dude using the word Lügenpresse, it all seems very familiar..

12

u/mildpandemic 2h ago

9

u/AspectOW 2h ago

Exactly. People that enveloped in their own paranoias, conspiracy theories, and/or prejudices will never be persuaded otherwise; there’ll always be some excuse, some angle, some blind logic they’ll use to convince themselves they haven’t wasted years of their life on hatred.

25

u/GimmeYourMomPlease 4h ago

As someone whose seen the film, and went in with an open mind, there is no way these reviews are legit.

It's a shockingly bad film. I don't even mean the woke parts; that aside, it's a really bad film in every respect, from the woeful direction, stilted dialogue, really quite awful script and comical editing. Nolan phoned it in and produced one of cinema's greatest blunders. It will be studied in film schools as a cautionary tale of big-budget disasters and will tarnish Nolan's legacy as a film-maker.

The reviews are a bit like Emperor's New Clothes. Once the audience reviews hit this film's word of mouth will collapse the box office and the mainstream shills will fall into line.

(/uj, this is a real comment copied from the critical drinker subreddit)

The thing i always find funny about this is how much they overestimate the size of their bubble. All morning I saw coping about the critic score "just wait for the audience score to come outttt!!!!!". And it's like, the only people talking about black actors and Elliot Page being a Trans man are you guys and the people making fun of you guys. The rest of the population who is going to see this movie wont think twice about.

You spend all your time in the Critical Drinker, Quartering, Geeks and Gamers, Nerdotic communities, trap yourself in that bubble, and you just assume that the rest of the world is as hateful as you and cares about "wokeness" as their main criteria for analysis of media. And anyone who isn't is obviously lying and a paid shill. In reality the rest of society that actually touches grass looks at them as the creepy little weirdos they are.

It’s almost like they had no power from the start. The previous movies they thought the pushed to failure were always going to fail with or without their rage.

The stupidest part is they got mad about the casting for two characters who have a combined screentime of maybe TEN MINUTES in a 3 hour film.

Speaking of questionable casting I cant imagine a puppy ends up growing up looking like a dog like that.

They're all shills. I know the movie sucks even though i haven't seen it. If the movie's good that means I was wrong to piss and shid :(

Where is Henry Cavill when we need him; leaving the production for the sake of some integrity and sincerity...

Why do people want a movie that they have never seen to fail so bad? Like, get a actual hobby or something.
