He got to say goodbye to his dog. The good boy waited for him with his dying breath.

It wasn't just the tail wag, it was more so the dog dying as Eumaeus told Telemachus that the dog is waiting to see his owner one last time before he dies

The smallest, shortest tail wag in cinema history… but also the most gratifying for the goodest of all good dogs.

Dogs are a sign of faithfulness in art. The dog was faithful just like Penelope was faithful.

The moment they had the dog laying outside I had a feeling he’d be there until he returned and it was such a perfect way to reveal to his son that this was his father.

bawled my eyes out during this scene bc my childhood dog waited for me to get home from school before dying

Odyssey's "reunion" with his dog was one of the most memorable parts in the poem for me; was waiting for that scene the entire movie and was sadly disappointed that it didn't get me. Definitely one of the changes from the source material that I would say makes the story less emotionally heartbreaking.

With how much people love dogs, you'd see people definitely hate odisseus for that alone lol. Nolan made a smart change while also keeping the scene emotional and important.

IMO Argos was really useful in demonstrating that this pure-hearted being could still recognize the goodness of his owner, an owner who has spent the whole journey unable to recognize himself after the horrible war crime he did. The whole point of the moment in the film was to help encourage Odysseus to reclaim his pre-war identity. Powerful storytelling choice and punishing the dog by having Odysseus ignore him like in the poem would have countered this.

I doubt anyone would hate Odysseus for that, even if Nolan adapted the scene 1:1. He calls Argos a "noble hound," and wipes his tears before anyone can see; if anything people may feel his love even stronger, since I don't recall any tears from Damon in the film. It's a tragic, tearful moment in the poem.

I did like this scene. This was the scene where tom realized it was his father all along

u/glockobell 4h ago

I started fully sobbing at that scene.

No quicker to make the audience turn against a character than seeing them be abusive to animals. Those poor whines as the dog was being kicked had me looking forwards to seeing them get what was coming for them.

I was stunned that's the way they took that, honestly. Great moment.

As soon as i saw Argo in the trailer i knew i was gonna cry.

I did, of course

Argus got the ending that Fry's Seymour never got.

u/CallumRitchie23 3h ago

I lost my dog earlier this week so this one is going to be tough.

u/boomzgoesthedynamite 3m ago

I cried, legitimately. I also couldn’t take that they left the dog outside in that state.
