Sometimes you forget this movie is based on a story so old the mentor guy is actually named “Mentor”

u/damnyoutuesday 9h ago

That was a "ohhhhh so that's where that comes from" moment

u/Greizen_bregen 9h ago

And the term Odyssey comes from... Odysseus.

u/BigMickKegger 1h ago

Achillessey? Am I doing it right?

2

u/chrisrayn 6h ago

He’s just bringing news of other lands, Zeus’s requirement for Xenia, guest rights. And this professor will go as fast as he wants, thank you.

I mean He Is technically true tho.

1

u/RemyGee 6h ago

Doesn’t the word Odyssey come about because of the name of the poem? The meaning is a long complicated journey and that’s the poem.

u/thejonslaught 4h ago

True, and License to Ill, the debut album from NY Hip Hop legends Beastie Boys was named after Homer's The Illiad.

u/Spider_Dude 4h ago

No sleep till Ithaca is still a banger of a track.

u/thejonslaught 4h ago

I loved Brass Hoplon when I was a kid.

And Odysseus was a great general who returned from a long and brutal war to be king.

In America we also had a great general who returned from a long and brutal war. He became our 18th president.

His name was Ulysses, the Latin form of Odysseus.

2

u/BigHeadDeadass 8h ago

Yeah well in Latin he was Ulysses, who beat Lee in the Civil War

7

u/ImperatorUniversum1 8h ago

My favorite part is Sherman burning down Atlantis

1

u/This-is_CMGRI 7h ago

On those piddly medium tanks? No way. It'd be more believable if it was the heavier King Tiger tanks.

1

u/beary_neutral 7h ago

You want to know where the expression "Trojan horse" comes from?

u/BeefistPrime 3h ago

And Odysseus? Came from the Honda Odyssey

u/YakResident_3069 2h ago

And the Greek word for nobody is a pun on his name because similar sound.

u/CadeCunninghamLover1 1h ago

Wait so this might be a dumb question but where does the title of The Odyssey come from? Cuz there’s no way that was Homer’s original title, cuz the word didn’t exist at that point

u/DustyDGAF 9h ago

Nepo baby.

u/DerelictDonkeyEngine 1h ago

"Mono means one, and rail means rail. That concludes our intensive three week course."

u/ctan0312 9h ago

Lol I thought that during the movie, like “you really just call your mentor Mentor?” And then I realized that’s probably where the term comes from.

255

u/leftysarepeople2 9h ago

wanna hear what they call long journeys?

34

u/Greizen_bregen 9h ago

Or Marathons?

13

u/DukeofVermont 7h ago

Yeah it's named after that super old video game from Bungie, you know the company that got rich off Bungie Jumping!

/s

u/Enough_Sprinkles_113 4h ago

Don't be ridiculous!

It's named after the chocolate bar now know as Snickers, clearly...

u/gurgelhupf 2h ago

This is funny because Marathon is also from Greek

u/pjtheman 3h ago

That's right! Telemachusses!

u/edicivo 3h ago

Is it the same as Honda minivans?

u/Odessey_And_Oracle 4h ago

2

u/Mr-Lungu 7h ago

u/septidan 2h ago

“What is this, some kinda… Odyssey?”

“…say that again”

u/YakResident_3069 2h ago

u/PsychologicalTax42 9h ago

I laughed at that scene because I imagined Nolan was like you’re all gonna learn something here and you’re gonna like it

149

u/BeetsBy_Schrute 9h ago

Also pretty convenient that The Odyssey happened to a guy named Odysseus

u/Cicero912 5h ago

Next your gonna tell me Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig's disease

u/Lowelll 4h ago

Or that Arsenals most enduring and most successful coach is name Arsene lol

u/Ghost-E 5h ago

You ever think what a coincidence it is that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig's disease?

u/Omsy92 3h ago

You gonna make that same stupid joke every time that comes up?

u/Banana4scales 5h ago

Lazy writing...

u/YakResident_3069 2h ago

I read somewhere he's related to Ulysses

107

u/PettyTom952 9h ago

u/PromEmperorHarbaugh 8h ago

Damn what are the odds?

8

u/Polarizing_Penguin11 8h ago

And the protagonist is literally named “the protagonist”. Wait… That’s TENET.

17

u/ThePopeofHell 8h ago

And people are still talking about how accurate skin color and costumes are. Fucking ancient ass story with a god damned cyclops and were worried about trans people and black people… right

4

u/heathmon1856 7h ago

Dude goes to hell and talks to his dead soldiers. I went into the movie knowing nothing about the story and was surprised to see that there were mythical beasts and witchcraft. What an insanely well drawn out story.

u/Impressive-Potato 7h ago

And their ethnicities make sense. They were from countries that are not Greece

u/Cicero912 5h ago

Well, Helen was from Sparta but

u/FlameFeather86 3h ago

Helen's father was a swan and she was hatched from an egg. Let's not worry too much about her skin colour, shall we?

And Sparta? Not a million miles from the northern points of Africa.

u/queerhistorynerd 38m ago

right, why do have so many internet losers come to the conclusion only certain ethnicities can be born from an egg.

3

u/HungerSTGF 9h ago

I’m the Protagonist type shi

7

u/Ok-Range-3306 8h ago

origin of the word siren as well...

3

u/chrisandy007 9h ago

Insert "say that again" gif

3

u/spongebobisha 6h ago

Fun fact, Mentor plays Thor in God of War Ragnarok.

2

u/GameOfLife24 7h ago

Coming from screenwriter that made a character named protagonist in tenet

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 3h ago

"Maybe that's why he became a mentor" - Dwight Schrute

u/Fyrefanboy 3h ago

Fun fact, having a big, deep impressive voice in french is called a "voix de stentor"

Stentor is a trojan hero who was known for his big booming voice

2

u/HEATCHECK77 9h ago

With that in mind am I wrong in thinking - as it occurred to me driving home listening to The Big Picture’s episode around the film - that Antinous’s name is the root of ‘Antagonist’?

Could I Google that? Sure. But where’s the fun in that?

u/belanedeja 3h ago

am I wrong in thinking - ... - that Antinous’s name is the root of ‘Antagonist’?

Yes. Yes you are

1

u/aresef 9h ago

Reminds me of a really bad season of Power Rangers where the mentor has a name but the teens just keep calling him mentor.

1

u/Calinks 8h ago

Yea that was funny to me. Damn this story is old! Lol

1

u/australian_babe 7h ago

Man that’s actually so crazy

1

u/Thanmarkou 6h ago edited 6h ago

Originates from the Greek word "Μέντορας", meaning an experienced individual who teaches important things to a younger individual.

u/An0nymous187 5h ago

Men are pigs.

u/1mplication 2h ago

I loved this moment because I definitely under estimated how old this story was! Cool little tidbit.

u/junkman21 23m ago

When I was making a joke about not spoiling a movie based on 2,000 year old source material? I undershot by 700-800 years!

One of the craziest frames of reference was this: the birth of Julius Caesar was closer to us than the writing of the Odyssey was to the birth of Julius Caesar!

And if that one doesn't blow your mind, try this: the Odyssey is older than SIX of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World!!
