the twang of the bow synced up with the music was so freaking good, got me pumped up

u/Able_Advertising_371 10h ago

it was at that moment pattinson knew he was fucked

u/Brandon_Me 9h ago

I love that he as a boy watched Odysseus hunt. So the instant he heard the twang he knew.

And you can see it in his face, just his entire life flashing before his eyes in a second.

One of the best scenes I’ve ever seen in my life was everyone realizing it was Odysseus, but before anyone else realized it was Pattinson’s character trying to escape and Penelope locking everyone in there bc they both knew. Genuine chills. That whole scene is one of the most hype of all time

45

u/Brandon_Me 9h ago

I couldn't agree more.

u/AquaAtia 7h ago

It was a great scene 2700+ years ago and still is now. I didn’t remember every detail of the book but I remember the ending and was eagerly waiting to see Matt Damon’s Odysseus go ape shit and kill the suitors

u/willmcavoy 42m ago

"I don't need to kill everyone, just you!"

8

u/heebs387 7h ago

Felt like a mirror of the Red Wedding.

3

u/heathmon1856 7h ago

I was on the edge of my seat and locked tf in.

u/1mplication 2h ago

Absolutely. Great ending scene, and it made me wonder how transfixed people must have been when hearing it sung or told in the traditional sense, thousands of years ago.

u/YakResident_3069 2h ago

Was it better than the Return with Ralph fiennes?

9

u/_BallsDeep69_ 9h ago

He’s like “oh shit gotta go bye yall”

5

u/TJeffersonsBlackKid 6h ago

And hiding while letting everyone else fight and die for him. Little bitch.

3

u/Impressive-Potato 7h ago

"Dear go, that's Jason Bourne"

8

u/thecricketnerd 9h ago

Too scared to even grab a weapon and approach Odysseus until he was already completely surrounded

3

u/Impressive-Potato 7h ago

Get the swords! Get the spears! The shields!

u/WoahBenny23 10h ago

hearing it in the first act then it coming back in the final fight was sensational

13

u/chrisrayn 6h ago

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that was the plongiest twongy twang I’ve ever heard from a bow. It seems so sonorous. Like the string had elastic in it along with the other stuff. It resonated with a lasting set of euphonic tones. It was an incredibly well designed sound effect.

u/WoahBenny23 1h ago

it’s the bow tang in harmony with the harp strings

13

u/Acrobatic-Assist-574 9h ago

So insane that he did an audio callback like THAT. Iconic

66

u/Aaragon 10h ago

Something you've wanted the entire movie to happen finally happening is a trend I wouldn't mind more movies getting behind.

79

u/Your-average-scot 9h ago

This is basically chekhovs gun and is one of the most widely used narrative film techniques of all time

15

u/Zohaas 9h ago

Recently, there has been a trend of subverting expectations, so it's less common in "cinema".

12

u/ZizzianYouthMinister 9h ago

Yeah I was almost expecting him not to strum the bow in the last scene

6

u/hithere297 9h ago

Is "subverting expectations" really a recent "trend"? When it comes to mainstream cinema at least, I feel like things have gotten more safe and predictable in recent years.

1

u/Zohaas 8h ago

The pendulum definitely swings back and forth.

Edit: there's also a trend of setting up something to pay off later, then focusing on it and not doing the pay off. As a checky wink to the audience.

7

u/Public-File-6521 9h ago

You mean like Holland exposing his gut and wrecking the suitor in the same way he learned with his teacher?

5

u/sheetsofsaltywood 9h ago

Somewhere out in the world, you just made Rian Johnson cry.

5

u/leftysarepeople2 9h ago

It hit on Circe's island too.

u/inFAMXS 3h ago

So fulfilling cause everyone knows only Odysseus could make that sound you knew it was on

u/thesmash 10h ago edited 10h ago

The score for this was incredible. Ludwig is a strong contender to win the Oscar for score.

u/big_mustache_dad "A second Starscream has hit the World Trade Center." 9h ago

The sirens scene where they put the wax in their ears and it dulls everything was brilliant

8

u/Digit4lSynaps3 8h ago

I remember thinking in the theater "thats exactly how it feels when i put my noise-cancelling earbuds in"

17

u/hesnothere 8h ago

Saw it in IMAX an hour ago. When Patel puts in the right ear, and that side of the speaker mix muted, I almost wanted to fucking cheer before he even got to the other ear. Fantastic attention to detail.

7

u/howtospellorange 7h ago

I had to control myself to not actually pump my fists in the air during that lmao

u/sirius4778 2h ago

Yeah that made me giddy lol

u/pjtheman 3h ago

I loved the moment where one guy pulls out his wax and frantically swims to the sirens. You could see the grim acceptance in the other sailor's face as he realized there was nothing he could do to stop it.

51

u/rhunter99 9h ago

There’s a scene where it sounds like ticking and it reminded me of interstellar

4

u/RobotChrist 6h ago

Ticking is the sound of Dunkirk tho

2

u/GameOfLife24 6h ago

Reminded me of Dunkirk too, now that you mention it, I believe he enforces a ticking musical piece in all of his movies to denote urgency and stress

26

u/UpsideTurtles 9h ago

Bro could win an Oscar for every score he does

4

u/SkoomaSkoomSkoo 8h ago

He damn near does

12

u/asian_hans 9h ago

The buildup of the Troy siege from going out of the horse to opening the gates was fucking phenomenal

5

u/redz191 9h ago

Saw the preview of this scene in it’s entirety in my Avatar screening way back in December and was fucking hyped

6

u/STLOliver 9h ago

Just imagining the Academy voters hoping to spread the wealth watching this like “Damn, we’re really gonna have to give this guy ANOTHER Oscar? Alright, so be it!”

5

u/thesmash 9h ago

He’s just operating on a different level, undeniable talent

2

u/TJeffersonsBlackKid 6h ago

That will put him one behind John Williams.

But I’ll be damned if he doesn’t deserve it.

u/karateema 1h ago

Cosidering Dune 3 will probably be ineligible, i think he might seriously win 2 Oscars in a row

u/WriterV 1h ago

Ludwig is the primary reason I wanna watch this movie, much as I'd love to see an epic movie set to a score that fully utilizes ancient greek instruments one day...

53

u/TheAsianToothpik 10h ago

The music in this movie actually put me into a full body sweat. Not since Fury Road do I think I’ve done that

150

u/Kopitarrulez 10h ago

Saw this Monday and that last twang with the Hathaway turn around shot fucking stays with you forever.

13

u/chizzmaster 10h ago

Incredible acting

54

u/mikeyfreshh r/Movies Veteran 10h ago

The music in general was fucking good. Ludwig is on a generational run right now

9

u/binky779 9h ago

Bringing back the Sirens musical cue when Obysseus sees Penelope was S-tier.

4

u/seclusionx 9h ago

Been on one. The throughline of all the different music he has made is straight up insane.

3

u/chriswizardhippie 8h ago

I loved the soundtrack and didn't know until your comment OF COURSE it's Ludwig dude's becoming one of my favorite modern composers. Might be early to give him the Elfman or Williams comparison but dude's good at it.

u/ClubSoda 4h ago

Ludwig is very good but is he Zimmer level? I don't know.

62

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast 10h ago

That's probably the auditory moment I most want to hear again in theaters. I want to go see this at one of the Air & Space IMAX theaters as soon as I can to experience that there

12

u/chriswizardhippie 10h ago

It was fantastic. There's one scene that bothered me where he does the bow struck and the strings don't play. Also the death of Agamemnon was so much of a jump scare that scream Lupita does was so loud in IMAX

9

u/WoahBenny23 10h ago

that scream actually is jarring as fuck😭😭

1

u/cindybobindy21 7h ago

Lupita shines as a horror queen, loved her in Us.

4

u/vinicitus 10h ago

I saw that coming from a mile away and it still jump scared me 🤣

1

u/UpsideTurtles 9h ago

yeah same I gotta buy tickets, never actually been to the one in downtown though

29

u/derpington1244 10h ago

The twang was absolutely incredible, that shit has staying power

20

u/Ladikat 10h ago

Gave me goosebumps

3

u/derpington1244 10h ago

It got me so hard I cried for some reason lmao

1

u/heebs387 7h ago

Getting a boner and crying at the movies simultaneously, I don't know if I should be sympathetic or jealous.

10

u/BradBrady 10h ago

Truly cinematic especially the final fight.

chefs kiss

2

u/ThePixieVoyage 9h ago

The score was my favorite part. So good

2

u/rammo123 6h ago edited 5h ago

Instant ascendence to the pantheon of all-time great sound effect moments, up there with the Attack of the Clones seismic charge.

u/Wuktrio 4h ago

The archery itself was absolutely atrocious, though. Matt Damon used that bow like he was in Men in Tights.

2

u/timetravlrfromthepst 10h ago

Yeees! That was so good!

1

u/Ryanblakbird 8h ago

I wish I do not know that you shouldn't do that to bows. It ruins it. Especially that bow which seems to be heavy because only him can string it. Kinda ruined those scenes for me.

2

u/ManintheGyre 8h ago

I also cringed at the half-assed archery throughout by all the main characters. Kinda casually shooting from the hip I've never seen that.

1

u/heathmon1856 7h ago

Lmao. What? I’m sure this is a thing if he wasn’t stringing the bow on his own.

u/hopscotch0 3h ago

That with the thunder as well set the tone. These was Odysseus's version of Zeus's thunder and he is coming back to claim what's rightfully his.

u/pogchamppaladin 2h ago

Genuinely in the running for the best Nolan sequence of all time. Absolute perfect capstone to the film.
