looks like a Nicolas Winding Refn film

48

u/MisunderstoodBadger1 20h ago

I got the trailer as an ad and within the first 2 seconds I had that thought

33

u/Misdirected_Colors 15h ago

Drive bought so much goodwill for Refn from me. I love that movie. I've tried to watch everything he's done since and just have enjoyed none of it. I guess he's just not for me.

14

u/MF-Dot-JPEG 14h ago

Have you tried the Pusher trilogy? Those are excellent.

12

u/David_Roos_Design 10h ago

And Bronson.

u/TinkerTailorSoulja 3h ago

I always forget he did Bronson. Kinda wish he did more with Hardy, their eccentricity compliments each other

8

u/thedinksterr 13h ago

Just finished the third one last night. Really good stuff. Hadn’t seen Drive yet so decided to start from the beginning with his Pusher trilogy before watching Drive. Glad I did, but looking ahead at his filmography past Drive it’s nothing but middling reviews which is a bummer to see

10

u/Swagcopter0126 9h ago

Can always watch and make your own mind up. Neon demon isn’t for everyone but still should be checked out.

u/AmbroseEBurnside 1h ago

Definitely check out Bronson.

u/Mynsare 1h ago

That is because you need to move backwards in his filmography from Drive. After Drive he has increasingly focused on his neon-branded style over substance.

But he has some amazing movies prior to Drive. basically all of them in my book, Pusher-trilogy, Valhalla Rising, Bleeder, Bronson etc., whereas I agree with you that his output after Drive has become less and less interesting if you are not a complete fan of that particular style.

u/seoulsrvr 2h ago

I kind of love Too Old to Die Young as pretty, atmospheric nonsense to have running in the background but the rest of it since Drive has been a disappointing, shiny slog.

I'm not even sure who the audience for this stuff is supposed to be. Who is the target demo for Neon Demon?

I can't imagine any of it is profitable either. I'm not sure why he doesn't return to the gritty realism of the Pusher series - he would make bank.

u/WafflesofDestitution 1h ago

Who is the target demo for Neon Demon?

I honestly loved that movie. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the vibe of horror and sleaziness of the modeling world that was just lurking below the gorgeous cinematography and the glitz and glam of bright saturated colors. It might be because I like films with disturbing themes but I'm not much of a horror guy (not a fan of jumpscares and such). It's very much style over substance, but in my opinion the presentation was pitch-perfect.

u/Gluwuschel 1h ago

Because not everything is about profitabl, a larger audience and bank...

u/gamersecret2 21h ago

Very curious to see what Refn does with this. Even when his films are divisive, they never look like anything else being made.

70

u/HungerSTGF 20h ago

Besides Drive I don’t think I’ve liked anything else he’s made. Very much oozing with style visually but everything else especially pacing and writing leave a lot to be desired imo

Would be very surprised if this movie turns out to be good tbh

41

u/stenebralux 20h ago

Have you watched the Pusher trilogy? Amazing flicks, imo.

But I do like all his movies... and his crazy TV show.

36

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 19h ago

Don't forget Bronson. Tom Hardy was amazing in that too.

8

u/LuckyDubbin 16h ago

Had no idea he directed that until I read your comment.

3

u/severed13 11h ago

That's the majority of his films for me. Played Death Stranding so I really got to like Heartman, and then left and right I start noticing he directed so many of the films I've really liked

1

u/MissingLink101 12h ago

That's a good film but in my head I always compare it with Chopper which I prefer

13

u/HungerSTGF 18h ago

I should have written "Post-Drive", you're right, Pusher and someone else mentioned Bronson, those are all good.

16

u/Sparrowsabre7 17h ago

Too Old To Die Young was an underapprciated black comedy. So many moments that are just hilarious just because of the situation. Like the hit man hiring another guy to kill someone, but the target photo he hands over has two people in it so the guy kills the wrong one.

The prolonged electric car chase set to Mandy. It's just so surreal.

4

u/uroboros80 14h ago

billy baldwin and the stuffed tiger *TCHHK* leaps to mind

5

u/Sparrowsabre7 10h ago

Truly unhinged performance.

Oh, and don't forget all the cops chanting "Fascism! Fascism!"

3

u/Green_Day_Fan 19h ago

Which crazy tv show? There’s been two 😆.

4

u/ThreeLeggedMare 18h ago

Probably too old to die young. That's a crazy show. I've never been as compelled by something that regularly put me to sleep. No knock on the show, the languid pace and soundtrack kept hitting my power button

6

u/Sparrowsabre7 17h ago

I feel hypnotic or mesmerising are the best description for NWR work. It took me a whole episode to realise Amazon does not do "non-english only" subtitles, they are either on for everything or off for everything, so I assumed the ep that was 90% in Spanish was a deliberate choice that monolingual English speakers wouldn't understand it haha

3

u/Turbografx-17 11h ago

Sometimes I'm in the mood for a visually sumptuous movie. Just pure entrancing visuals and not much else. I guess that's why I really liked The Neon Demon.

2

u/Curnf 15h ago

Bronson is worth a shot if you haven’t seen it yet. I also liked Valhalla Rising but it wasn’t as strong as Drive or Bronson for me.

1

u/Quay-Z 8h ago

I liked Copenhagen Cowboy the most.

u/Shockwavepulsar 2h ago

I liked Bronson, Drive and Only God Forgives because it got close to the line of pretentiousness but didn’t cross it. I personally felt the Neon Demon crossed that line.

0

u/HungNordic 18h ago

Bronson is his best in my opinion

4

u/atclubsilencio 13h ago

It looks so much like The Neon Demon, which I personally loved , but it just seems like more of the same.

1

u/Ms_Meercat 10h ago

I also like Sophie Thatcher and have seen Charles Melton do excellent work in May December so I'll give it a try for that combination for sure

206

u/carlogeppetto 20h ago

I would watch anything for Sophie Thatcher.

52

u/themegx 20h ago

She’s been one of my fave actresses these days! She crushed every role I’ve seen her in

44

u/ohverychill 20h ago

I haven't seen a ton of her stuff, but I thought she was great in Companion and Heretic

33

u/themegx 20h ago

Saw her first in Yellowjackets and then watched these other two mainly bc she was in them, and enjoyed her role even more in those. I probably woulda watched both of the movies eventually as I like horror, but they moved up the list bc of her

8

u/MaskedBandit77 19h ago

Prospect is worth watching, if you haven't seen it.

u/batikfins 3h ago

I’ve only seen her in these two but she crushed it in both. Holding her own against an industry vet like Hugh Grant is no small feat.

-3

u/Conscious-Quarter423 20h ago

she was serviceable in yellowjackets

22

u/themegx 20h ago

I def enjoyed her role more than most of the others in the teens timeline

15

u/jan_67 18h ago

Her facial acting especially in crying scenes is amazing imo. That woman can seriously act with her eyes like few can.

14

u/Monahands 20h ago

Charles Melton is a fantastic up and comer as well. This movie should be really interesting.

25

u/Schwight_Droot 20h ago

Such a babe

14

u/WhoStoleMyBicycle 19h ago

If she were a president, she’d be Baberaham Lincoln

10

u/ModestMouseTrap 19h ago

Sophie Thatcher becoming my new celebrity crush. She’s such a great actor

2

u/trampled_empire 12h ago

I was going to make the same comment

3

u/SpikeyPT 16h ago

she's actually my wife

13

u/bluehawk232 20h ago

Saw trailer this looks trippy as hell

42

u/SamwisethePoopyButt 20h ago

I am excited to watch this movie (as a fan of Only God Forgives and Too Old to Die Young), even though I'm like 95% sure Refn is washed and it'll suck shit.

33

u/BobbyBriggss 20h ago

Why do you think he’s washed if you liked Too Old to Die Young?

Copenhagen Cowboy was good too.

13

u/Mantis_Toboggan--MD 19h ago

Two things are true for me simultaneously in regards to Too Old to Die Young...

  1. I like the show, I've watched it twice, which is something with how long it is

  2. It's incredibly masturbatory so I often end up laughing at Refn's heavy handedness

Weird to me that I can be enjoying something but also occasionally yelling "Refn, you pretentious hack, wtf is this!" at the screen. I think that's why I like him though and will always give his stuff a watch.

11

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 19h ago

Tbh this is probably why him and Kojima get along so well because the same thing happens to me when i play a lot of Kojimas games lmao

2

u/isavedlatin40 12h ago

Copenhagen Cowboy is crazy good. Can’t wait for season 2

1

u/Quay-Z 8h ago

Is that ever going to happen, though?

2

u/covert0ptional 20h ago

Yeah exactly lol. That show is like all of Refn's strengths and weaknesses dialed up to 11. I loved it and it's stuck with me ever since I saw it, I'm interested in whatever he does next. Still have to watch Copenhagen Cowboy, though.

1

u/SamwisethePoopyButt 20h ago

The last few episodes of Too Old to Die Young were already trying my patience and Copenhagen Cowboy felt like him circling the drain tbh. The reviews are bad too. But I am open to being surprised and will at least try to enjoy it vibes alone. (Though I don't smoke weed anymore so it's not gonna be like the old days.)

1

u/andykekomi 20h ago

As long as he didn't use AI in this I'm willing to trust him.

22

u/JesseKilgannon 20h ago

So excited for this. Big fan of everything Refn has done

11

u/BurgerNugget12 20h ago

The reviews for this worry me. Still excited to see it tho

25

u/ZombifiedSloth 20h ago

Everything he released after Drive hasn't reviewed well but I still liked them.

10

u/stenebralux 19h ago

Same. I like that there's some people out there not trying to do conventional narrative films. As much as Lynch gets praised nowadays by the movie nerds and critics.. people have a hard time accepting anything that doesn't follow the same expected movie structures.

4

u/ZombifiedSloth 19h ago

Yeah, I think Lynch is a good comparison in the sense that Refn is just making stuff he wants to make and isn't really interested in whether anyone else likes it. No one else is going to give you a TV show where your main characters are a lowlife child molesting corrupt cop and a cartel boss with a mommy fetish. And then have the big climax of the show be the cartel boss getting pegged before unceremoniously executing the cop with a machete.

u/THEpeterafro 1h ago

Personally they excited me. I love a good trainwreck

3

u/Mantis_Toboggan--MD 19h ago

If there aren't bizarrely long drawn out shots like Too Old to Die Young I'm going to be disappointed. Loved and hated that at the same time, but it feels like a Refn staple now. Unsure if he will have enough running time to get into much of that here.

3

u/Dirtyswashbuckler69 16h ago

Finding out that Refn got Pino Donaggio to score this got me hyped

3

u/YetAnotherWTFMoment 10h ago

Unless he is laundering $$ for bratva, I cannot understand how this guy gets greenlit to put anything on screen - with one exception, none of his movies are commercially successful.

2

u/SwagginsYolo420 16h ago

Sophie Thatcher in a Nicolas Winding Refn film, nice!

2

u/chdude3 9h ago

Wait, the guy from Death Stranding?

8

u/JMDeutsch 19h ago

Neon Demon is easily one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

I don’t know what I expected, but necrophilia and cannibalism weren’t it.

It realllly reallly wanted to go for shock value symbolism, but it just came off as really fucking stupid.

It was like if you told a middle schooler to write an edgy movie about beauty and the modeling industry.

8

u/nitrogenhs 16h ago

It's one of my favorites. The mid film genre switch does it for me.

5

u/Stevenwave 16h ago

Funny cause imo Only God Forgives is one of the worst films I've ever seen. It made me fully believe Drive was a total fluke and that I'd never subject myself to another directed by him.

4

u/TomatoSilly1683 20h ago

Sophie Thatcher is such a badass name to me for some reason lol

7

u/Conscious-Quarter423 20h ago

the reviews are bad

26

u/Climate-Of-Hunter 20h ago

Only God Forgives has bad reviews and I love that film. Refn is very divisive.

6

u/covert0ptional 20h ago

"Wanna fight?" I think that might be a bad movie, but I love it lol.

Refn is a weirdo that makes interesting art and I'm here for it.

11

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 19h ago

Also Cliff Martinez's soundtrack is so fuckin cool. I have a lot of tracks from Only God Forgives and Neon Demon on my synth/electronic playlist lol

3

u/covert0ptional 18h ago

Oh nice! I have a colored vinyl for only Too Old to Die Young, haven't played it in a while though

1

u/old_el_paso 14h ago edited 14h ago

Bummed I slept on getting Fantasia tickets. Wanted to catch this + Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, but both were sold out by the time I got around to it. Yeah, Refn is divisive, particularly post-drive neon refn, but I’m all aboard.

1

u/Fonypoxx 13h ago

Wait??? Didn’t this movie already come out???

1

u/BrondellSwashbuckle 13h ago

Oooh Sophie Thatcher 😍

1

u/spice_war 13h ago

Soundtrack’s gonna be a 10/10

1

u/dustylumpkin 11h ago

That text is awful, looks like it was quickly drawn on an iPad

u/damienkarras1973 5h ago

Sophie Thatcher was so incredible in companion I thought her performance was just completely top notch regardless of any issue with the flick. I got a feeling one of these days she's gonna be an absolutely huge star if she keeps showing her acting chops.

Hope they make a sequel to companion

u/Gremlin303 3h ago

Is that England rugby player Marcus Smith?

1

u/w1czr1923 19h ago

Is it weird that I’m annoyed about the order of the actors on the poster? They don’t align with the pictures :(

0

u/doublesquealix 18h ago

I could argue that your eyes are probably naturally drawn to Sophie's portrait first, which is why it makes sense that her name is listed first

1

u/ClockworkDreamz 18h ago

I feel the ad might be better than the film.

1

u/DoomguyFemboi 18h ago

4/10 on imdb after 229 votes, god damn. I can't tell if that's really indicative of how awful it is or if everyone who has seen it early is an ex of Refn and he cheated on em

4

u/happy_2_c_u 16h ago

I'm expecting it to be pure style over substance. I already have a ticket.

0

u/puke_lust 16h ago

Prolly a lot of staring and not much happening like their other movies

-15

u/Ccaves0127 21h ago

Great director....this poster, though, um.....did they not realize it was due until the night before?

23

u/confusing_roundabout 21h ago

I think it's a really good poster. Nice colours, good shots of the leads. It's better than most.

-9

u/Alarming_Orchid 20h ago

The average floating heads poster conveys more than this

11

u/MajesticCentaur 20h ago

What should it be conveying? Trailers already spoil enough as it is, I don't need movie posters to start doing the same.

1

u/lonelythrowaway463i9 20h ago

bro is acting like every poster tells you exactly what the movie is about and a marvel style poster of floating heads tells you what the movie will be and not just a roster of characters in it. some people

-6

u/Alarming_Orchid 20h ago

What the movie is about? Kinda basic for any promotional material dude

5

u/lonelythrowaway463i9 20h ago

Ah yes. When I look at any movie poster I know exactly what it’s about

-2

u/Alarming_Orchid 20h ago

Not the bad posters, no

1

u/ForgotEffingPassword 15h ago

A good poster does not need to convey what the movie is about… not sure why you think that.

This is a dope, simple poster. If you don’t like it ok but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

0

u/Alarming_Orchid 10h ago

It’s an advertisement. That’s the whole point of it

1

u/ForgotEffingPassword 10h ago

No it’s not.

1

u/Alarming_Orchid 10h ago

Did you just “nuh uh” me

7

u/MoneyLibrarian9032 r/movies Contributor 21h ago

Good poster imo

11

u/BunyipPouch Currently at the movies. 21h ago

I think it’s a solid poster.

10

u/Brownie_McBrown_Face 20h ago

This sub will find a way to complain about literally any poster

2

u/IDKimnotascientist 20h ago

He’s capitalizing on cinematography nerds knowledge of the rule of 3. Cinematography really all Refn has

1

u/BilverBurfer 20h ago

What's wrong with it?

0

u/Ccaves0127 18h ago

I just think having a poster with their faces and nothing else is exceptionally lazy. The Neon Demon poster is awesome
