Poster New Poster for ‘Her Private Hell’ - Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (‘Drive’, ‘The Neon Demon’)

Very curious to see what Refn does with this. Even when his films are divisive, they never look like anything else being made.

u/HungerSTGF 20h ago
Besides Drive I don’t think I’ve liked anything else he’s made. Very much oozing with style visually but everything else especially pacing and writing leave a lot to be desired imo
Would be very surprised if this movie turns out to be good tbh

u/stenebralux 20h ago
Have you watched the Pusher trilogy? Amazing flicks, imo.
But I do like all his movies... and his crazy TV show.

u/AlterMyStateOfMind 19h ago
Don't forget Bronson. Tom Hardy was amazing in that too.

u/LuckyDubbin 16h ago
Had no idea he directed that until I read your comment.

u/severed13 11h ago
That's the majority of his films for me. Played Death Stranding so I really got to like Heartman, and then left and right I start noticing he directed so many of the films I've really liked
1
u/MissingLink101 12h ago
That's a good film but in my head I always compare it with Chopper which I prefer
13
u/HungerSTGF 18h ago
I should have written "Post-Drive", you're right, Pusher and someone else mentioned Bronson, those are all good.

u/Sparrowsabre7 17h ago
Too Old To Die Young was an underapprciated black comedy. So many moments that are just hilarious just because of the situation. Like the hit man hiring another guy to kill someone, but the target photo he hands over has two people in it so the guy kills the wrong one.
The prolonged electric car chase set to Mandy. It's just so surreal.

u/uroboros80 14h ago
billy baldwin and the stuffed tiger *TCHHK* leaps to mind
5
u/Sparrowsabre7 10h ago
Truly unhinged performance.
Oh, and don't forget all the cops chanting "Fascism! Fascism!"
3
u/Green_Day_Fan 19h ago
Which crazy tv show? There’s been two 😆.
4
u/ThreeLeggedMare 18h ago
Probably too old to die young. That's a crazy show. I've never been as compelled by something that regularly put me to sleep. No knock on the show, the languid pace and soundtrack kept hitting my power button

u/Sparrowsabre7 17h ago
I feel hypnotic or mesmerising are the best description for NWR work. It took me a whole episode to realise Amazon does not do "non-english only" subtitles, they are either on for everything or off for everything, so I assumed the ep that was 90% in Spanish was a deliberate choice that monolingual English speakers wouldn't understand it haha

Sometimes I'm in the mood for a visually sumptuous movie. Just pure entrancing visuals and not much else. I guess that's why I really liked The Neon Demon.

I liked Bronson, Drive and Only God Forgives because it got close to the line of pretentiousness but didn’t cross it. I personally felt the Neon Demon crossed that line.

It looks so much like The Neon Demon, which I personally loved , but it just seems like more of the same.

I also like Sophie Thatcher and have seen Charles Melton do excellent work in May December so I'll give it a try for that combination for sure

u/carlogeppetto 20h ago
I would watch anything for Sophie Thatcher.

u/themegx 20h ago
She’s been one of my fave actresses these days! She crushed every role I’ve seen her in
44
u/ohverychill 20h ago
I haven't seen a ton of her stuff, but I thought she was great in Companion and Heretic
33
•
u/batikfins 3h ago
I’ve only seen her in these two but she crushed it in both. Holding her own against an industry vet like Hugh Grant is no small feat.

Charles Melton is a fantastic up and comer as well. This movie should be really interesting.

I am excited to watch this movie (as a fan of Only God Forgives and Too Old to Die Young), even though I'm like 95% sure Refn is washed and it'll suck shit.
33
u/BobbyBriggss 20h ago
Why do you think he’s washed if you liked Too Old to Die Young?
Copenhagen Cowboy was good too.

u/Mantis_Toboggan--MD 19h ago
Two things are true for me simultaneously in regards to Too Old to Die Young...
I like the show, I've watched it twice, which is something with how long it is
It's incredibly masturbatory so I often end up laughing at Refn's heavy handedness
Weird to me that I can be enjoying something but also occasionally yelling "Refn, you pretentious hack, wtf is this!" at the screen. I think that's why I like him though and will always give his stuff a watch.
11
u/AlterMyStateOfMind 19h ago
Tbh this is probably why him and Kojima get along so well because the same thing happens to me when i play a lot of Kojimas games lmao

u/covert0ptional 20h ago
Yeah exactly lol. That show is like all of Refn's strengths and weaknesses dialed up to 11. I loved it and it's stuck with me ever since I saw it, I'm interested in whatever he does next. Still have to watch Copenhagen Cowboy, though.
1
u/SamwisethePoopyButt 20h ago
The last few episodes of Too Old to Die Young were already trying my patience and Copenhagen Cowboy felt like him circling the drain tbh. The reviews are bad too. But I am open to being surprised and will at least try to enjoy it vibes alone. (Though I don't smoke weed anymore so it's not gonna be like the old days.)

The reviews for this worry me. Still excited to see it tho
25
u/ZombifiedSloth 20h ago
Everything he released after Drive hasn't reviewed well but I still liked them.
10
u/stenebralux 19h ago
Same. I like that there's some people out there not trying to do conventional narrative films. As much as Lynch gets praised nowadays by the movie nerds and critics.. people have a hard time accepting anything that doesn't follow the same expected movie structures.
4
u/ZombifiedSloth 19h ago
Yeah, I think Lynch is a good comparison in the sense that Refn is just making stuff he wants to make and isn't really interested in whether anyone else likes it. No one else is going to give you a TV show where your main characters are a lowlife child molesting corrupt cop and a cartel boss with a mommy fetish. And then have the big climax of the show be the cartel boss getting pegged before unceremoniously executing the cop with a machete.

If there aren't bizarrely long drawn out shots like Too Old to Die Young I'm going to be disappointed. Loved and hated that at the same time, but it feels like a Refn staple now. Unsure if he will have enough running time to get into much of that here.

Unless he is laundering $$ for bratva, I cannot understand how this guy gets greenlit to put anything on screen - with one exception, none of his movies are commercially successful.

Neon Demon is easily one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.
I don’t know what I expected, but necrophilia and cannibalism weren’t it.
It realllly reallly wanted to go for shock value symbolism, but it just came off as really fucking stupid.
It was like if you told a middle schooler to write an edgy movie about beauty and the modeling industry.

u/Stevenwave 16h ago
Funny cause imo Only God Forgives is one of the worst films I've ever seen. It made me fully believe Drive was a total fluke and that I'd never subject myself to another directed by him.

the reviews are bad
26
u/Climate-Of-Hunter 20h ago
Only God Forgives has bad reviews and I love that film. Refn is very divisive.
6
u/covert0ptional 20h ago
"Wanna fight?" I think that might be a bad movie, but I love it lol.
Refn is a weirdo that makes interesting art and I'm here for it.
11
u/AlterMyStateOfMind 19h ago
Also Cliff Martinez's soundtrack is so fuckin cool. I have a lot of tracks from Only God Forgives and Neon Demon on my synth/electronic playlist lol
3
u/covert0ptional 18h ago
Oh nice! I have a colored vinyl for only Too Old to Die Young, haven't played it in a while though

Bummed I slept on getting Fantasia tickets. Wanted to catch this + Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, but both were sold out by the time I got around to it. Yeah, Refn is divisive, particularly post-drive neon refn, but I’m all aboard.

Sophie Thatcher was so incredible in companion I thought her performance was just completely top notch regardless of any issue with the flick. I got a feeling one of these days she's gonna be an absolutely huge star if she keeps showing her acting chops.
Hope they make a sequel to companion

Is it weird that I’m annoyed about the order of the actors on the poster? They don’t align with the pictures :(
0
u/doublesquealix 18h ago
I could argue that your eyes are probably naturally drawn to Sophie's portrait first, which is why it makes sense that her name is listed first

4/10 on imdb after 229 votes, god damn. I can't tell if that's really indicative of how awful it is or if everyone who has seen it early is an ex of Refn and he cheated on em

Great director....this poster, though, um.....did they not realize it was due until the night before?
23
u/confusing_roundabout 21h ago
I think it's a really good poster. Nice colours, good shots of the leads. It's better than most.
-9
u/Alarming_Orchid 20h ago
The average floating heads poster conveys more than this
11
u/MajesticCentaur 20h ago
What should it be conveying? Trailers already spoil enough as it is, I don't need movie posters to start doing the same.
1
u/lonelythrowaway463i9 20h ago
bro is acting like every poster tells you exactly what the movie is about and a marvel style poster of floating heads tells you what the movie will be and not just a roster of characters in it. some people
-6
u/Alarming_Orchid 20h ago
What the movie is about? Kinda basic for any promotional material dude
5
u/lonelythrowaway463i9 20h ago
Ah yes. When I look at any movie poster I know exactly what it’s about
-2
1
u/ForgotEffingPassword 15h ago
A good poster does not need to convey what the movie is about… not sure why you think that.
This is a dope, simple poster. If you don’t like it ok but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

He’s capitalizing on cinematography nerds knowledge of the rule of 3. Cinematography really all Refn has
1
u/BilverBurfer 20h ago
What's wrong with it?
0
u/Ccaves0127 18h ago
I just think having a poster with their faces and nothing else is exceptionally lazy. The Neon Demon poster is awesome

u/adamsandleryabish 20h ago
looks like a Nicolas Winding Refn film
