Looking good. How'd you pull that off? Are you going to do the armrest?

Thanks! Basically you just flip it over and undo about 1000 staples, then you can remove the cover. Every couch is different so you kinda have to reverse engineer it from what you see inside. We were originally just going to replace the "webbing" (big straps in a woven pattern under the cushion) since those had worn out / broken and the now-fixed part of the couch was caving in. But once we opened it up we saw that the foam cushion was cut into like a grid shape by the webbing over the years (the couch is a hand me down but I think it was originally purchased in 2008, so it was almost 20 years old, definitely past the lifespan of the foam). We ordered new foam online to replace it, and stuffed the backing cushions with more polyfil since we already had the whole thing open. Unfortunately the couch makers glued the armrest together in a way that makes it pretty much impossible to disassemble, so we decided not to touch that for now :P Maybe later we could find somewhere to cut into it and get more stuffing in there.

Cool to see what it looks like in progress, half open, and not just finished. Though you did an excellent jon on the finished couch - looks store bought and (half) brand new! :)

This is really awesome! My mom has a couch very similar that she’s had for 20+ years and I want to help her redo it. Was there any guide or video you followed? If not this is still really helpful!

Small hole and a can of spray expanding foam? Probably a terrible idea. But then you might be able to pop your armrest like a cyst. 😂 Don't take ideas from me, I'm sleep deprived.

Who are you?

I’ve seen a lot of bots just reply to others’ comments as OP, and then OP replying to them asking them what the fuck you’re not me lol

u/f_u_g_g_y 14h ago
Could be a friend that helped OP, or one of OP’s other accounts, can’t say for sure

Neither, I have no idea who they are lol. Nor was there any fabric tearing.

What about the cat's claimed spot?

u/General-Accident-162 10h ago
That was really the best part of the story. The indent looked perfect for a cat loaf.

u/Nihil_esque 7h ago
Ah the cats prefer to sit on the windowsill behind the couch honestly. But I sit there occasionally when I'm feeling noncommittal about relaxing so maybe there's something to it

I do this so often and it infuriates me!

u/pantry-pisser 13h ago
Why do you alternate accounts so frequently?
3
u/umhell 12h ago
I have two phones and reddit on both, I couldn't log into my old account on my new device so I just made a new reddit...I have all social media on my old disconnected device which stays home, and my active phone with reddit (and no other social media) gets used on the go. It's really helped my mental health to have a social media device that I can't access without intention.

Mine switches based on notifications or something. Half the time I don’t even realize which one I’m signed into. I’m not sure how I even got two accounts. I think I was creating one when I realized I had access to an old one and somehow merged them. Also I’m not that other person, I just also have multiple accounts lol🙃

I can’t speak for anyone else but I have only ever made one account but some how I have 3 ? And often times when I leave Reddit and come back, I will come back as one of the others and I have to actively switch to this account. Glad to know I’m not the only one lol

The title says "we" so it could be OPs partner?
Edit: I made this guess an hour before OP commented with the answer but go off with the downvoting me for not being psychic ig

Looks like someone in the house is a (molecular?) biologist.
- DNA wall art
- Ball and stick model on the shelf
- Framework laptop.

u/Nihil_esque 7h ago
Haha I'm the biologist! More computational than molecular in practice though. The laptop belongs to my spouse, they're an IT person and practitioner of all sorts of techy things.

Aww. I was hoping for a mini-review of the laptop.

It’s a great laptop at a difficult price. But it will pay off in the long run after this AI shit gives up and lets us buy ram in peace. 16 looks very rough with seams on the touchpad bar Get the 13 if you want a more sleek light look.

How does one even do that?
8
u/Nihil_esque 7h ago
Feels like it shouldn't be possible right? It was more straightforward than I expected honestly, just labor intensive. If you flip most couches over you'll probably find that everything is held together by a bajillion staples, which makes it pretty simple to take apart and put back together, if you're very patient/persistent.

Remind me of that picture of the trucker who spent his working life with half of his face in the sun. Like half your couch enjoys a good cigarette on a sun lounger while the other is concerned that it's sunscreen isn't moisturising enough

u/von_sip 13h ago
Why half?
73
u/Nihil_esque 12h ago
That half was caved in because the straps under the seat were broken. The other half needs a refresh but is still somewhat functional, so we'll do that part later, this half already took us 3 days and $300 lol

Do you know how fractions work OP? That's more like,1/3rd of your couch repair judging by the grooves and creaks in the rest of that middle couch on its repaired side.
Edit: nobody knows fraction ITT, got it.

It’s nice to see someone repairing furniture instead of throwing it away for some other crap
