I think that being a good commentor and knowing posts that might blow up might be a better strategy than trying to make good posts, but as you said all the contents garbage and points are worthless soooo might as well browse hot

The one exception are small subreddits browsing by new or rising is nice cause you can help answer people's questions that otherwise will only get one or two other comments

To be fair, Reddit changed its algo so that new posts show up on the home page. Maybe it's just me because I engage with posts like that, but I constantly see posts with <10 upvotes and posted <5 minutes ago among the first few posts when I refresh the home page.
