Weird being an English fan & us not being the most hated team

I hated you guys last night. My poor poor Mexico :( but at least it was one of, if not, the most entertaining game of the whole tournament. Good luck against Norway though lol

224

u/AnotherLexMan 10d ago

England has been involved in two really entertaining matches this tournament.  That really is unheard of.

65

u/RMCapricorn84 10d ago

They no longer play Southgate ball

26

u/bahamut19 10d ago

People are so fucking ungrateful, I remember a whole decade before Southgate when we couldn't string 2 passes together.

Southgate has many flaws but he also basically fixed our national team, turning us from being a running joke to a genuine outside contender for trophies.

37

u/Expo737 10d ago

True but let's not forget that Southgate ball got us all the way to the European Finals where we lost on penalties...

Cabo Verde Argentina

14

Yeah that had to be my number one. I was rooting for them and not just to hate on Argentina but genuinely wanted to see Cape Verde perform a miracle.

poor poor Mexico

That was a wild match. Mexico losing while the opposing team was down a player wasn't the expected outcome.

27

u/D-Rich-88 Haram 10d ago

That second goal two minutes after the first was tough. They almost overcame it but fell short. I don’t know the team well but it seemed like their strikers or midfielders just couldn’t get any penetration against England’s back line. Their one attack they kept trying and failing at was going wide and kicking a crosser

7

u/enjoiall 10d ago

Yeah the red messed up their game-plan more than it helped imo. They kept just sending crosses in on a taller team who stacked the box.

It was my first game I caught to support all my Mexican neighbors because they were all totally getting into it the whole neighborhood was electric.

As a neutral fan I couldn't believe what a good game it was, But I was heartbroken for all my neighbors who are genuinely good people and who I adore.

Personally, as an American, I was rooting so hard for your team yesterday after learning what the Mexican fans did near your hotel. Setting off fireworks and loud music with total impunity from the local police to tire you before your game against Mexico was so lame and unsportsmanlike that I watched the whole game. My first and only World Cup game I watched end to end. Well done eliminating Mexico and their cheating fans.

Orange man inserting himself into America’s image once again…

252

u/Pantsickle 10d ago

If America won, he's totally the type of guy that'd hog all the spotlight, take all the credit, and probably take the trophy too.

185

u/Futileexercise1308 10d ago

FIFA had already said he can hoist the trophy with the winners, because the president is a soft headed man child. I feel sorry for whoever wins and has to share the stage with a shit stinking pedophile.

121

u/No_Strike655 10d ago

Would be fucking hilarious if anyone else but USA wins and they just refuse to deal with this bullshit

11

u/Material_Cell_4792 10d ago

That guy is like a stupid spoilt brat with too much power. He's the kind of guy who will literally make it a big issue if he feels he didn't get enough credit and "respect".

Sadly, they would most likely just have to go along with him just so he doesn't throw a tantrum and makes everything about himself.

61

u/xxvb85 10d ago

I really hopes that happens.

8

u/Proof-Peak-9274 10d ago

I would step away and let him hold it by himself, make him seem like even more of a joke to anyone outside of America.

30

u/likekoolaid 10d ago

luckily you can trust mbappe to absolutely stonewall anyone else who wants to hoist the trophy

15

u/Scoobydewdoo 10d ago

FYI, it's traditional for the championship winners of most USA-based sports leagues to visit the White House. Teams have often completely refused or just left it up to the individuals quite often during the Orange One's time as president.

Don't get your hopes up, the likelihood of the US winning the world cup is insanely small. The only way an inferior team can win a tournament is if they have a rock solid defense and also get kind of lucky all the way to the final. The US defense is not that great, and the gap in attacking talent with other nations is immense. They'll struggle against Belgium, imagine against the likes of Spain or France

35

u/ChapterN7 10d ago

If the US doesn't make it, I'm rooting for France just to piss the rest of Europe off and because it's our 250th and they showed up for us.

I think a bigger factor is how many people on reddit have no social life/friends off the internet. You've got people that will argue that it's totally normal to have no real life friends and only socialize on video games and discord. You've got people who talk about having literally 0 friends by the age of 25 as if that's a totally normal life path to go down. People who talk about how the only person they socialize with is their wife and they hate any form of socialization that isn't that.

These people don't reflect the real world because they aren't part of it. They're fuckin losers

I feel like you guys are making a much bigger deal about this than it really is. One player doesn’t make that much of a difference, just seems like Europeans finding the one reason to hate on the US on this topic as well

If you have a problem with this, you should have a problem with Ronaldo (Portugal) and Argentina and want them to lose as well. Even more so considering he played 2 games that he was banned for. I don’t recall seeing this outcry then?

Great job making this “great sport” seem inviting. Goddamn there’s so much drama in soccer, take me back to the NFL

European reaction has been absolutely insane. I expected a lot more "who cares we'll spank their yankee asses anyways" responses from them but apparently no this is the worst thing that has ever happened to them.

Fr, I suppose the “bring it on” attitude is more of an American thing from what I’m seeing of the European voices.

And it’s not like this would be the first or most damning case of corruption FIFA has been involved with. Just so weird.

The funny part is they were already crying after every USA postmatch thread on Reddit anyway.  This meme was already true for them even before the Balogun situation.

Do you know why?

Multiple nations have been suspended for this exact thing. Governmental interference is against the rules

lol

Inflategate. The annual, "NFL player arrested for murder". NFL covering up CTEs. The weekly riot because a city's team lost. The weekly riot because a city's team won. On and on. NFL is all about the drama

I actually want the US to advance as far as possible now because the further they advance the worse FIFA looks.

Can you imagine the pure farce if US actually won it?

I hope the USA wins so fucking bad.

Crazy part is that the USA doesnt care nearly as much about soccer as basically every other country. Winning would just be a side quest.

Australia’s not a big soccer country either. It’s probably only our 4th or 5th watched sport.

u/gordogg24p 10d ago

Japan and Korea care more about baseball than soccer too.

Today I learned why FIFA has such a bad reputation.
The current US president? Same corruption, new distraction.
I'm cheering for France and Spain anyway. Oh and Norway - nice winning goal there.

If we make everything political they win... These athletes are a representation of the best talent the world has to offer, they are not representative of the best or worst political views of their country. Just enjoy watching the fruits of their incredible talent, training and team dynamic.

Remember to vote and stay politically active otherwise, it's boring but matters
