Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Subreddit Rules

We've learned that some people just flat out can't see our subreddit rules, so I'm posting them here in a pinned post so we can link them when necessary and so they're super easy to find.

Rules for r/legaladvice Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1. All responses must offer an answer to the legal question posed by the OP. We enforce this with bans.

Anecdotes are not permitted. Neither is advice that encourages someone to break the law. Nor is "get a lawyer" a sufficient response.

There's a pinned post at the top of the subreddit specifically addressing this rule. We will absolutely ban you for commenting without answering the legal question

2. Personally Identifying Information

Posts or submissions that ask for or contain information that could be used to identify either party are subject to immediate removal.

3. Advertising or Recommending a Lawyer or Business

We do not allow referrals to particular lawyers, law firms, or other businesses.

4. Do not request or send a PM

All discussions must stay on the subreddit for everyone's protection.

5. Include your location

You must include your location in the following format: location: yourlocationhere . It must be that exact format, and it must be in the body of your post.

6. Read our full list of rules

Read our full list of rules here: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/wiki/index#wiki_general_rules

7. This subreddit is for simple legal questions.

This subreddit is for simple legal questions. We can't help with preparing a defense, legal research, etc. We cannot review contracts, plan your defense, or give you specific advice on exactly how to present your case with the court. You need a local attorney for that. Additionally, we do not accept medical malpractice questions.

8. NO LLMS

No LLMs. No ChatGPT. Don't recommend it, don't use it to answer questions, and don't use it to compose your modmail when you get banned for using it. Using it to compose questions is generally ok.

We will permanently and irrevocably ban you for this.

9. Mods can remove things we deem inappropriate or disruptive

Any post and any comment can be removed by the mods at any time if the mods decide the post/comment is or has the potential to be disruptive or is otherwise inappropriate.

10. Posts must be about a real scenario that you or someone you know is facing.

To expand on this, we additionally do not allow anyone but the immediately involved parties to ask custody related questions. Not friends, not significant others, not grandparents. Reddit is free.

11. Post must contain a legal question

A legal question is one that can be answered with the law, be it a law or ordinance, or caselaw.

12. US and Canada only

Laws are different everywhere. We can only help with legal problems in the US or Canada because we have no regular, reliable commenters from other countries. For other countries, please search for an appropriate subreddit.

Custody Divorce and Family Changing child’s first name after being forced to name them something I dislike

Location: CT
I gave birth to my son 6 months ago and I absolutely cannot stand his name. My husband pressured me to name him after his father, we live with his parents. He told me that if I did not that our marriage would suffer and that he would no longer be a partner to me, essentially doing the bare minimum. Under pressure, I caved and gave my child the name he wanted. I should also note my son was a nicu baby. I received a call ten days into the nicu stay from the clerk saying we had to name our son or else he would be called “babyboy” on the social security card and birth certificate.

I moved from another country to Connecticut, so I don’t have any family here to back me up. I also have a toddler so I did not have anywhere to go which is why I complied. I really hate my son’s name, especially since my father in law isn’t a really good person and I have had issues ever since I moved here with my husband’s family!

In these situations does a judge force the parents to come to a joint agreement? I just want a name that we can both agree on because it is just not fair! Would the judge just force me to keep my son’s name?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry for any grammar mistakes.

Custody Divorce and Family Unattended child in vehicle 2.5hrs

Location: WI

My son reported to me that his father left him alone in his vehicle for 2.5 hours (truck running). I filed a police report and he literally told me there's no criminal charges that can be filed, and that the time frame it happened wasn't hot enough to endanger him. It was 8-10:19am. The heat index ended up being over 100 that day.

Does this not fall under child endangerment or neglect? I absolutely refuse to believe that this is okay.

Edit (added additional info and more context): My son is freshly 7 years old, mentally unstable, and absolutely should never be left unattended for any period of time. He actively self-harms, is prone to violence, and has no impulse control. Two CPS reports have been made for this incident, both by professionals who are mandated reporters, and has also been reported to the GAL assigned to our ongoing custody case.

Contracts "Contract" My Parents want me to sign

Location: Illinois

This is made on a throwaway account as I am unsure of if my parents are aware of my main reddit username.

TL;DR: My parents have presented me with a contract (link at bottom) to mandate certain things as I continue living under my roof. I need help navigating this scenario as they have mentioned being able to fine or evict me for certain infractions.

I am a 28 y/o man currently living with my parents and one of my brothers. I moved back in with them in 2023, at such a time they established that I should work and pay rent or continue studying. I have continued studying and maintained employment with good success and am continuing to work on improving myself so that I do not have to return to my parents' house once I leave again.

I would argue that I am a model "tenant" as I am quiet and fairly clean. I keep my room relatively tidy, though occasionally leave some clothes on the floor, and maintain my personal hygiene very well, including laundry and other things. I typically cook my own food, though I haven't recently, or eat food from restaurants or my job. I have had verbal disputes in the past over attending Mass, as I am an atheist and do not feel that I should be required to attend any form of religious ceremony in order to maintain housing.

The following is a contract that my parents have written and requested for me to sign. They have brought forth this "contract" just last week, and I only received a paper copy a couple days ago. They initially proposed this after "a little birdie" told them that I was viewing Onlyfans content or making "inappropriate" posts on Reddit, which isn't any of their business regardless of whether I have done these things.

I already despise living here. Despite having my own vehicle, making myself very small, and impacting everyone else in the house as little as possible, I am still being restricted in numerous ways. Many of these restrictions are nonsense. The contract mentions I am responsible for my personal space, yet I am not permitted to move my main desktop PC upstairs, for example. They have requested that I keep my door open because I "should have nothing to hide." Similarly, they have requested I keep "normal" sleeping hours, while I maintain that my time should be mine to manage as I see fit, so long as it is not detrimental to my classes or employment (Which it does not). I can understand an argument for maintaining quiet, but I am not often a loud person and am typically doing homework during late hours anyway.

I am exhausted and desperately applying to jobs wherever I can. I have begun being incredibly frugal to save as much money as possible so that I can be prepared to move out at a moment's notice. My parents are not, to me, "safe" people. I don't enjoy spending time with them or being around them. I need help navigating this "contract" so that I can maintain my sanity for as long as I can, until I can manage to leave this hellish house.

My main concerns are the following:

  1. Would a contract like this even be enforceable in any capacity? If it is enforceable, does it enable any sort of protections for me in the same way a legal lease would, such as eviction notices of 30 days for some locations?
  2. Assuming the contract is overall enforceable, does any element fall outside of that? Since the First Amendment mentions freedom to practice religion, including no religion, would that be enforceable? Similarly, would policing the content I view online be legal?
  3. This is technically up for debate and alterations. My parents have given me time to consider it. Assuming it is enforceable, what elements, additions, changes, etc. should I request? What would protect me legally while I live here and help me have some sense of actual privacy?

Job threatened to tow my car.

Location: Elizabethtown, Kentucky. It's a factory job, so it's not like they're trying to save the handicapped parking for customers.

My rearview mirror is kinda chonky, like me, so the placard doesn't fit. So I placed it on the dashboard, easily seen through the windshield. I honestly don't know if that's verboten.

When I finished my shift, I came out to find a warning under my wiper saying if I parked in a handicapped spot again, my car would be towed.

Is this legal? I have the placard, it was placed where it could be seen. I'm not just parking there for funsies/convenience. My legs don't always work right, and I don't want to fall in the parking lot.

Friend in deconstructed from a cult and now is trying to figure out how to get her toddler a doctor

Location: Austin Texas

So, this is strange but I need help. I don't know if it's for this forum or another. But my friend essentially was brainwashed and was in a freebirthing Christian cult up until a few months ago. She isn't completely deconstructed, but she is doing pretty good for someone who used to cry about scented hand soap. The issue is-she freebirthed. Her toddler who is about 3 hasn't been to a doctor. She wants to take her kid to the doctors but is afraid of cps. She has a lot of trauma which led her to this cult, and I am trying to figure out how to help her. I don't condone her actions, but she wants to do the right thing now. She lives in Austin TX, is there any advice on her getting her child looked at without her kid getting taken away? The kid isn't sick or anything. But I suspect he may need some speech therapy. She is a good mom overall, aside from the no doctor thing! Her kid is clean, has a clean home, and is loved. Yes, I know the doctor is important, I told her this, but she was afraid someone would try to take her baby. I think she had some bad postpartum issues that never got addressed. She was even terrified to get the mail for the longest time. I am trying to be a supportive friend, I don't want her punished for trying to do the right thing. She does have a birth certificate (I don't know how, but she does) for the kid. What else would she need to help transition from crunchy cult to normal person?

Other Civil Matters Police Officer wanted to meet with me, then i received citation

today i was driving to work on a semi-busy neighborhood street and there was a car simply parked directly on the road right in the middle of the day at noon... no signal on, just sitting there as cars are driving by.

i was on my way to work, so i simply attempted to go around him, was gong maybe 30mph and right as i was parallel to him, he decides to turn and rammed right into me... my car went skidding across the road as he nailed the rear of my car.

turns out, he just got this vehicle yesterday, and he looks like he's about 17 years old or so... he apologized to me.

i was late for work, so i left after we exchanged information... 30 minutes later a police officer left me a voicemail asking me to call her back about the collision.

she said the other driver filed a police report and she wanted to give me the information for that, and what not.

i showed up at the station, and she was pretty nice, and she just asked me what happened with the collision, and i explained... and then she wrote me up for a citation because in my explanation, i told her that i attemped to drive around the vehicle... that street has a double yellow line, but she said the ticket could probably get waived in court (which isn't mandatory).

i was a little pissed... no officer observed the collision and now i felt stupid for even showing up.. i was trying to cooperate with the officer about this whole thing, didn't want them looking for me or anything.

was i stupid for even calling them back about this situation?

Landlord Tenant Housing My landlord didn’t disclose that I was paying for both sides of my duplex’s water bill. He charges my neighbor a flat fee for water, but I’m on the hook for the entire water bill (there’s only one meter). Is this legal? (Indiana)

1.9k Upvotes

I noticed my water bill has been unusually high, and I contacted my water company who informed me that I am paying for both sides of the duplex’s water/sewer. I talked to my neighbor and he told me that our landlord charges him a monthly flat fee for water/sewer. I brought it up my landlord and he brushed it off, saying it would be too much work to split the meter and this is the reason he hasn’t “raised my rent” and that he “raised my neighbors rent”. Is this legal? Location: Indiana

UPDATE: Insurer says they'll drop us if we accept a tenant's ESA

Location: Kentucky

Just wanted to say thank you very much to everyone that was kind enough to offer their advice and opinion on our situation.

The attorney my girlfriend scheduled a consultation with ghosted her for their meeting and she has sent an email, called the office, and left voicemails to no avail so we gave up there.

That being said, while the tenants had completed their side of the application the cosigner we required them to have (other wise they did not meet our credit requirements) sent us a message refusing to sign for them.

We were able to refuse the application on Zillow because of this and now they are all reaching out saying they will sign it now and such. We are not dealing with them any further and the original potential issue seems resolved by the legitimate concern of them not meeting our credit requirements.

I wish we would have gotten actual legal counsel to tell us our options but are happy to be able to move on and look for other potential applicants. We have also taken the advice of limiting number of pets in-general and other things that were recommended.

Thank you again!

URGENT: I’m the sole borrower on a car loan, but my father is the sole owner on the title. He cancelled the registration and REFUSES to transfer ownership. What can I do?

Location: Massachusetts

I’m in Massachusetts and need advice.
The auto loan is solely in my name. I’m the one making all the payments.
The title is solely in my father’s name.
He recently cancelled the registration (because he failed to pay his excise tax, he did this last year and it took forever to reregister the car) and is refusing to sign the notarized paperwork required to transfer the title into my name.
Nissan told me there is no workaround without his signature.
So I’m stuck paying for a car that I don’t legally own. If I stop making payments, my credit is affected. If I drive the car while it’s unregistered, I’m the one who could get ticketed or have it towed.

Do I have any legal options if the titled owner refuses to cooperate, or do I need to speak with an attorney? Please no judgement focus on the issue at hand.

ETA!!!:

I spoke with the dealership’s sales manager over the phone. He confirmed that I was the primary buyer (father co-buyer) and that it’s actually both my father and I are on the loan (even though I’m making all the payments). He also confirmed the vehicle was registered ONLY to my father, but refused (or was unable) to explain why. I’ve requested copies of all purchase, financing, title, and registration paperwork from the dealership so I can understand exactly how this was structured. I don’t know if this makes anymore sense to you guys?

I accidentally saw everyone's salaries because of a spreadsheet mistake. Am I at risk if I mention it?

Location: New York
I work for a mid-sized company in the U.S., and something happened this morning that I honestly wasn't expecting. A manager shared a spreadsheet with our team that was supposed to have some project information on it. While I was looking through it, I realized there was another tab that hadn't been hidden. It included what looked like everyone's names, job titles, and salaries. I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentional because the file disappeared from our shared folder about 15 minutes later and a corrected version was uploaded.

The thing is, I wasn't snooping. I didn't bypass any permissions or try to access anything I wasn't supposed to. The tab was just there, and once I realized what I was looking at, I closed it. But obviously I can't unsee what I saw. Now I'm in a weird position because a coworker mentioned getting the "wrong spreadsheet" too, and I have no idea whether to acknowledge what was in it or just pretend I never saw it.

I'm not planning to share anyone's salary or make a big issue out of it. My concern is whether I could get into trouble simply for admitting I saw it if someone asks. Could an employer legally discipline someone for viewing information that was accidentally shared with them, even if they didn't go looking for it?

My brother is gone and I think it’s for good.

Location: Maine

Just to clarify, he’s an adult. We both still lived at home with our parents before he disappeared, so there isn’t really anything the police feel they can do. Since he left voluntarily and didn’t technically commit a crime we’ve basically been told to wait.
He’s always been a loner. Growing up he never really wanted much to do with other people. He only had 1 girlfriend his entire life and that was back in high school. Other than that he never had what I’d call real friends. There were people he’d occasionally talk to at work or school but he never hung out with anyone or built close relationships. He also never got along very well with our family. Most of the time he stayed in his room and only came out when he had to. Whenever he did talk to us conversations usually turned into arguments or ended after a few words. I don’t think it was social anxiety or that he was shy he genuinely seemed to dislike people in general. He always complained about society how fake everyone was and how the world was falling apart and how he just wanted to be left alone. It wasn’t like he hated one specific person he seemed to resent almost everything about life. After high school he worked 2 different jobs. He ended up getting fired from both of them because he had trouble following rules and didn’t get along with coworkers or management. He wasn’t lazy though. He worked hard when he wanted to and he saved almost every paycheck. He rarely spent money on entertainment or going out. The things he did spend money on were guns, camping equipment, hunting gear, and survival supplies. His bedroom closet was packed with all of it. He also owned multiple guns 2 shotguns, several pistols and a large amount of bullets. Everything was legally his. The day he disappeared all of it was gone. He didn’t leave a note. He didn’t tell anyone where he was going. He just packed everything that mattered to him and left. I’m about 99.9% convinced he intentionally disappeared into the wilderness. We live in Maine, and there are enormous stretches of forests, mountains, logging roads, and remote areas where someone with enough survival knowledge could avoid people for a very long time. If anyone I know could survive out there alone, it would probably be him. About a week after he left my parents finally contacted the police. They took the report, but because he’s an adult and there was no evidence of foul play or that he was forced to leave they basically said there wasn’t much they could do. They said since all of the guns and gear belonged to him there wasn’t anything illegal about him taking them. What worries me isn’t necessarily that he planned to hurt himself. I honestly don’t think that’s what this is. I think he simply decided he was done with civilization. He always talked about wanting to get away from people forever and now I think that’s exactly what he did. At the same time I can’t completely shake the feeling that he could be dangerous if someone happened to run into him. I don’t mean I think he’s wandering around looking to hurt random people or anything like that. That’s not what I’m saying. But if someone stumbled across wherever he’s staying, confronted him, or he felt threatened, I think things could go very badly. He was always extremely distrustful of other people.
Every day that passes without hearing anything makes it feel more real. Four weeks doesn’t sound like a long time, but when someone completely disappears without contacting anyone once it starts to feel permanent. Part of me hopes he’s okay and just living the life he always wanted. Another part of me wonders if we’ll never hear from him again. Right now I honestly don’t know which possibility is worse. Why will the police do nothing about this?? It’s illegal to do this right?

Being sued for a car accident from 6 years ago

Location: CA As the title says, i recently discovered I’m being sued for $8600 (after interest accrued) for a work vehicle accident I was involved in 2020. It’s my understanding that the company I worked for had their insurance company defend me in court and the case was then closed. Fast forward to last month, I receive a notice in the mail from the DMV stating my license is being suspended due to an unpaid judgement relating to the accident in 2020. After reaching out to the law firm listed on the DMV paperwork, it seems the plaintiff’s insurance company filed a lawsuit against me personally in 2023 and I’m only now finding out about it after summons and other serve papers had been sent to my previous address. I have the option to start a payment plan to reinstate my license and start paying the full judgement back or pay a $6000 lump sum to settle the judgement. The plaintiff’s attorney advised I reach out to my own insurance company and notify them of the situation as they’d rather go after my insurance rather than me personally. The insurance company I had at the time has not been helpful as I believe it’s past the statute of limitations and I can no longer open a claim. What’s my best option going forward? I obviously don’t have $6k to cough up nor do I want to have to pay anything out of pocket if i don’t need to. Any advice is appreciated!

Company accidentally paid severance to me this morning despite it not being announced publicly and claimed I already "signed the agreement" and then withdrew it (TN)

Location: Tennessee, US

To give some context, I received a notification from my bank that I had a check deposited from my employer that was the equivalent of a weeks' pay, a part of my bonus, and the equivalent of my monthly pay. I was very confused because I'm on bi-weekly pay and was not supposed to get paid until next Friday. On my statement, it specifically stated "severance compensation" at $12,000... which is my monthly salary pre-tax.

Candidly, I did have a pretty good idea that we would have layoffs and I knew I would probably be on the list due to the nature of my role and tenure, so I'm not worried about that and was thinking it would happen last week of the month. But I guess they are doing it in the next few hours.

When I saw this, I reached out to the COO and just straight up asked him and he more or less told me "welp, I'm probably on the list too buddy and call payroll/HR" and as soon as I reached out to payroll, they withdrew my deposit.

They claimed I had already signed a Docusign, sent me a copy, and I absolutely did not sign that and stated that knowledge of that infringed upon my NDA. So here are my questions:

  1. My (soon-to-be former lol) employer is a publicly traded company where I have stock options. Obviously, I cannot disclose the impending layoff, but they made it sound like I'd have to re-negotiate my layoff since I had access to private information and received verbal confirmation on a recorded call (single party-state). I'm not going to act on that or anything but they implied that was an issue. Is that correct?
  2. I absolutely did not sign that document. I actually have not even signed our 2026 handbook because they never asked me to and I unironically wrote 1/3 of it lol. Docusign obviously has traceability and that whole thing seemed really shifty. In the case that I get denied severance or "fired" for cause... what legal actions should I take?

I've known it was coming, but I didn't even as much imply I knew about it other than my wife's awareness I've been actively interviewing for new positions.

Edit: They offered the same thing with an additional NDA and asked if I would remain on for another week to "wind things down". Currently waiting on a call back from my attorney and documenting everything I can that doesn't break my NDA.

Edit #2 (afternoon): I asked them to substantiate the document I "signed". It was the page pertaining to at-will employment within out employee handbook from 2025... still legally binding even though I think it's hilarious the person who wrote 1/3 of it hasnt even signed it lmao but I have intentionally not communicated at all with anyone until I get further clarification. I know exactly what happened at this point.

Inherited property with deceased brother's children. What are my options?

(50F) inherited my childhood home jointly with my brother after our father deeded it to us years before he passed away. My father always said he expected us to keep it because neither of us would agree to sell.

The property isn't in a desirable area and isn't worth a fortune, but it has a lot of sentimental value to me. After our father died and years later our grandfather who lived here also passed, my brother wanted to sell it immediately. I asked if we could keep it, and I offered to pay for all of the renovations myself with the understanding that improving the property would increase its value. Over the years, I've done extensive remodeling, mostly through my own labor and paying for materials. At this point, the only major projects left are finishing part of the attic, refinishing some floors, and painting the exterior.

My brother passed away two years ago. His ownership interest went to his two children. They inherited substantial assets from him, but they haven't contributed anything toward the house and don't seem interested in helping maintain it. I continue to pay for repairs and deal with ongoing homeowner issues, and the property has become a financial and emotional burden.

I'm worried about several things:

  • If I stop maintaining the property, it will lose value.
  • If we sell, can I recover any of the money or value I've invested in renovations, especially the improvements I paid for?
  • If they want to sell and I don't, or vice versa, what legal options do either side have?
  • Would I owe significant capital gains taxes if the property is sold, given that my father originally deeded it to us for $10 years ago?
  • Is there a legal way to separate our ownership so we're no longer financially tied together?

I'm in the United States, Location: (North Carolina).

I'm mainly trying to understand my legal options before speaking with an attorney. I know state law matters, but I'd appreciate any general guidance on what type of attorney I should consult and what issues I should be asking about.

Other Civil Matters Family left their stuff in my garage, I want it gone (MI)

Location: Michigan

My family member’s stuff is in my garage with a verbal agreement she could keep it there (after moving it out of her cheating boyfriend’s house). However, now I need her to move it out (because she is back with cheating boyfriend).

I won’t allow him on my property to help her move it, so she claims she cannot move it.

Normally, I would assume I can dispose of it after a certain amount of time of it not being moved. However, I’m not sure that is the case because I am denying him access to the property to help her move it.

To be clear, it is HER stuff. I do not have any of his belongings. This has been repeatedly established in writing over text. Furthermore, the agreement never involved the ex.

What are my options to deal with the property, if I have any at all when I’m not allowing him access?

Thanks for any help.

Criminal Law Nj sexual assault legal advice

Location: New Jersey

So I have a friend that let me crash with him while I was going through family drama. Upon staying with him, I realized that he had some kind of demented idea of wanting to sleep with me. Mind you, I am a straight male.
One day, when we were out hanging out, moseying around the city that we live in, I went home, crashed in the spare bedroom, and I woke up to him performing fallatio. Now, I woke up, and my initial reaction is violence naturally. But for some reason, I was just stuck and he was violently trying to stick his finger in my ass. And when I woke up he than decided oh wow I’m so sorry idk why I did that
Now with all that being said, he treated me like shit when I was crashing there to the point that I just pretty much abandoned all my stuff. And since then have moved on. I am debating legal action.
He is someone that's not documented in the United States. He has a DUI in... New York City, that he never showed up to court for.
He also did a hit and run during that DUI. I've been friends with him for a long time. I feel very guilty.
I'm at a loss and not sure exactly what to do. I feel like he should pay for his crimes. But the detriment of that would be him doing time and getting deported eventually.
Now, I know I'll lose a lot of friends over this because of the communal drug addiction he has tagging in most of his friend group And so a lot of people have the idea that they're really good friends with him because they're addicts. I have texts of him saying sorry I had him on a recorder admitting and apologizing. This is a tough decision to make
If there's any advice, please let me know, the location is in New Jersey.

PPO qualifications

Upvotes

Location: NYS

I'm in a domestic violence marriage and I've started to talk to an attorney. The dv hotline asked if I was going to file for a PPO. At the time I wasn't sure I qualified for one. It's mostly emotional and mental abuse. We haven't had sex in almost two years, I honestly don't remember when we did. he did rape me in 2022 after the birth of our son. He's been coercive in the past, but I've been shutting him down since 2022.

I have several mental health disorders. I feel he's weaponized them against me. I was talking to someone recently and it started to click. Could I use that for my PPO?

Landlord is getting divorced and forcing us out of home Need advice asap

So June I moved into a owner occupied unit and signed a lease for 12months 1bd 1 bth about 1800 sq/ft all utilities included even high speed internet for 2k a month. The place was basically the basement of the home which the LL was renovating to be a stand alone unit. They had all their kids belongings down there and in turn for bringing the toys up we could use the furniture if I wanted for the first month.

During the tour the landlord never mentioned any legal disputes. Since then Ive been going through hell dealing with their mess. The landlords spouse attempted to break into our portion of the unit to get to their partners side multiple times and still does so from time to time. They often circles the block in the mornings maybe twice a week. I have been followed from the home and recorded and had photos taken multiple times. I have a police report of their actions making me feel unsafe.

There are things the landlord has yet to deliver to me. I have been saving everything as far as promises, demands and requests.

The landlord has been threatening to take money out of the security deposit to threaten me for mistakes on their end. For instance they stated I can keep the furniture, which i ended up not using. They wanted to take money out of the deposit to get it cleaned. The spouse was breaking into the home I changed the locks on my own and the LL wanted to take money out of deposit to get new keys. The LL also wanted new background checks and wanted to take it out of the deposit. I refused all of those situations.

Now heres where I need help. The LL on 7/15 told me I have to move out bc they are losing the court battle and will just sale the house. They said I am expected to be out by Aug 1st so less than 15 days. They stated they will give me all of my money back in person. However today 7/16 i got a text from them saying I will get my full deposit returned when I move out with no mention of the rest of the money. I paid 1st and last months rent plus deposit and recently July rent on the 1st. I have all receipts

Also I feel its unfair I have to randomly find a new place and to find a unit in my area with these same specs. I dont know any lawyers or how to start this process to make sure I am fairly compensated for the inconvenience. I believe a 15k pay out may be justifiable for instance all my money back thus far -8k a few months rent -6k. and things like moving costs - uhaul, app fees, helping hands, gas to go and tour units and calling off work to try to find something asap. this is not including emotional damage of what im going through.

Any help would be appreciated. May post in multiple places

Not sure if this is legal advice... But can I file an OSHA complaint for a job I don't work at, but I know about? (Ohio)

Upvotes

I was at the airport and the AQI is in the "Hazardous" range where I am (Location: Ohio, USA) and none of the outside airport workers had on any PPE or anything to protect against it.

I went to go report it on OSHAs site, but it said if I filled it out incorrectly I would be breaking the law and be fined up to 10k. It also asked for things I don't know, like the managers name, etc.

Am I allowed to submit it anyway, even though I'm not a worker there?

Thanks

Traffic and Parking Summoned to court 3 times for the same ticket?

Location: Turner County, Georgia, USA

Hi everyone, I feel like I’m at my wits end. 9 months ago, I drove from Orlando Florida to Atlanta Georgia for a concert. On the drive down, I was pulled over for broken taillights and speeding in turner county Georgia. The officer told me that the county was fairly lenient, and if I showed proof that my taillights were functioning by the time the ticket was due, it would most likely be dropped.

I did not want to appear in court in Georgia, (I live in Orlando) so I hired the ticket clinic, explained the situation, sent over videos of my working taillights, and they told me they would take care of it.

Court date came and went, checked on line, tickets cleared, no update from the ticket clinic. They said they would only call if they had bad news, so I didn’t worry.

Fast forward 4-5 months, I get a court summons sent to my home address. If I don’t appear in 2 weeks, I would get my license revoked and a warrant out for my arrest. I immediately call the ticket clinic thinking they didn’t take care of my ticket, but they did. They offer to go to court again for me free of charge, as I already paid them to combat this ticket before.

Now, 9 months after the original ticket, I get ANOTHER summons with the same message. Show up to court in 2 weeks or get arrested and license revoked. Same ticket number, same court house.

I’ve been to turner county one time in my whole life, so I am 100% sure that it’s not just 3 different speeding tickets.

Where do I even go with this? Call back the ticket clinic? Complain to the court that I’ve paid this ticket twice already?

It seems other people (especially Florida residents) have faced a lot of issues with the same court, being charged multiple times for the same ticket and having their licenses revoked for tickets they already paid.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Contracts Gym kicking me out, but I'm under contract?

I'm a member at a gym, and I was informed about 2 weeks ago I would be ejected/kicked out for wearing Crocs. I've worn crocs every day for the past 18ish months I've been a member with no issue. I wear them because I have a renal dysfunction which causes my legs and feet to painfully swell when working out, particularly when doing cardio. (I'm not sure if this is important but this is a well documented health issue, as I have a somewhat rare kidney autoimmune disorder that I've been seeing specialists for half a decade)

I tell the employee who approached me I would just have to leave the gym, as I can't wear traditional athletic shoes. Apparently the owner decided there was a new rule banning all non-athletic shoes.

I decide to simply cancel my membership, but when I go to try to cancel, the website says I'm locked in until October of this year. So I did sign up for a year contract almost two years ago, and i was under the impression it would automatically bill me monthly after it was over. However, it appears it auto renewed for another entire year. I can't find anywhere i was informed or asked for permission for this renewal. Honestly I feel foolish for not noticing it until now.

So now I email the owner explaining my health situation, asking if any accommodations could be made. I get a generic looking reply stating no crocs but saying a solution would be found. I reply again asking about accommodations, but for the past 10 days I've received no communication whatsoever. I don't want to give money to a gym that's kicking me out for a health issue I have no control over. What can I do? Living in the state of VA, sorry if any of this is stupid.

Location: Virginia, USA

(edit) To clarify I just want to leave the gym

(edit2) To clarify again I only use the gym to do elliptical and upper body

(edit3) The website says I'm contracted until October 2026, but I am still billed monthly. I am seeking to just to not pay the remaining months I will not be able to use

Can my Illinois college require five-year biometric consent after I already enrolled in summer classes?

Location: Illinois, USA

My community college is switching all summer online classes to an attendance app that requires a live facial scan at the start of every session. The consent form says the vendor may keep a “face template” for up to five years after my last use. There is no option to show a student ID or join by video instead.

I emailed the registrar and was told the scan is mandatory, even though I enrolled before this system was announced. If I refuse, I’ll be marked absent and eventually dropped. The vendors policy also says biometric data may be processed outside Illinois, which is what really bothered me.

Does Illinois law require the college to offer a non-biometric alternative? Can consent be voluntary if refusing means losing the classes?
