On Wednesday morning, a 41-year-old man triggered a police operation by brandishing a firearm. During the operation, officers used their service weapons, injuring the 41-year-old.

Witnesses reported via emergency call that a man was pointing a firearm at people in the Menageriestraße area and had then gone into a supermarket. The Dresden Police Department immediately dispatched officers to the scene, including special forces for life-threatening situations (LebEL).

In front of the supermarket at the corner of Menageriestraße and Berliner Straße, police officers spotted a man holding what appeared to be a musket, which he then fired at them. Police officers subsequently used their service weapons, injuring the man. He then shouted an Islamic religious saying. The 41-year-old was eventually arrested by the police. After receiving initial treatment from the officers, he was taken to a hospital in Dresden.

No other injuries were reported. The suspect's weapon was seized. Whether it is a live firearm is under investigation.

The suspect is a Turkish citizen. He is being investigated for threats and violations of weapons laws. The 41-year-old's motive is still unclear.

The perpetrator was Yigal Amir, a 25-year-old former Hesder student and far-right law student at Bar-Ilan University. Amir had strenuously opposed Rabin's peace initiative, particularly the signing of the Oslo Accords, because he felt that an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank would deny Jews their "biblical heritage which they had reclaimed by establishing settlements". Amir had come to believe that Rabin was a rodef, meaning a "pursuer" who endangered Jewish lives. The concept of din rodef ("law of the pursuer") is a part of traditional Jewish law. Amir believed he would be justified under din rodef in removing Rabin as a threat to Jews in the territories.^\16])
