Awww... My doggy is 15 now... He stopped being able to play the things he wants to, so I had to up his snuggles. Now he gets so excited for snuggles like never before.

u/Healthybear35 7h ago
Mine is 15 and one day she'll act like walking is too hard, and then the next day she runs and jumps like a puppy. I think she's just trying to give me anxiety

u/Camo_Rebel 2h ago
Same. My 16-year old Cheyenne will sleep all day and do nothing. Another day she will run around and act like how she was when she was a puppy.

God damn it. Looks like my Harley Quinn. Lil grey and black face, diaper too at the end. She crossed the rainbow 2 weeks ago. Fuck shit tears. She was 14, had her since 6 weeks old. It was time and I had to let her go peacefully. Most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make. My best friend. She’s with me everyday still.

This is one of the reasons I can't get a dog. It is hard enough seeing your parents getting older my pet it's too much for me. There are really amazing animals 😭

u/tripleDzintheBreeze 9h ago
So many old dogs like this being euthanized in shelters without love or a warm home ♥️ please change your mind 😢

This is the sole reason I won't get a dog, even though it has been my lifelong dream. I can't imagine pure unconditional love and loyalty like this fading in front of my eyes, and me not being able to articulate any verbal comfort to him. I'd be a destroyed man after its passing.
18
u/Strong_Recording_128 10h ago
But all love is eventual loss. It all takes courage.
I don’t want to look back at the end at a life that had no dog love, because nothing even comes close to it.→ More replies (1)4
u/MrOphicer 9h ago
I get that wholeheartedly, but it's not for me. And it's not about courage, just compassion and the aftermath. Maybe when I'm older and I can devote all my time to him and our remaining time on earth will be roughly similar. Who knows.

9
u/Unfair_Explanation53 10h ago
Why not change your perspective to the fact that you get to provide a dog with the best life it could hope for in the short years they only get given.
5
u/MrOphicer 10h ago
I'm not prepared for that kind of grief. But I do understand and sympathize with what you're saying.
5
u/tomieluv 9h ago
this. my family just put down one of our rescues of almost 15 years. it’s so heartbreaking watching them disappear before your eyes and not being able to do anything besides spend time with them and offer comfort. hurts even more when there’s 2. first walk without them, seeing their empty bowl, their collar. waiting for her ashes now. she was in my dreams last night though:’)

There are times I regret getting my cat. I know her life is shorter than mine and that when she passes it will destroy me. Fuckin crying just trying to type that. I totally understand where you're coming from and respect it.
However I do know that her life would have been very different and probably tragic if we hadn't crossed paths. She kinda fell into my lap and I couldn't say no. Dang cat has saved my life as much as I saved hers.
3
u/MrOphicer 8h ago
I have a friend who had a similar experience with his cat (his name was Bacon) and after he passed away he was devasted for months so that experience and watching him go through it realy made an impression on me so I'm very sympathetic to your ache :(
And it's amazing you improved her quality of life as I'm sure it did your. Grief is indeed the price we pay for love.
2
u/Strong_Recording_128 7h ago
I feel you.
It’s almost like you want to get another one just to have distraction from the pain but they what if you resent that one? It’s so complicated.3

9
u/CaptMorganSwint2 10h ago
Obviously that precious baby should be peacefully sent across the rainbow bridge by now (diapers and struggling to walk is bad).
It just brings up the fact that this sweet baby can go out with dignity, but we can't grant fellow terminally ill humans the same kindness.
6
u/secret_nun 8h ago
100%. While this poor baby is very sweet, as someone who works in vet med it’s hard for me to look past the suffering.
Over recent decades, owners have started to wait longer and longer and people seem to care less about quality of life in senior pets. Futile care has become a big ethics topic in vet med. Vets have become slower and more cautious to tell owners that it’s time. Studies are finding that veterinary professionals experience high rates of *moral injury*, not just burnout, and this is one of the things that contributes.
7
u/Rampag169 10h ago
It’s sad to see when the pets mind is still there but the body fails them. It hurts to make that decision but it is one that needs to be made nonetheless. Prolonging their suffering is being selfish to yourself.

u/FatalModelCustomer 10h ago
Maybe time to take him to the special farm.

Our general rule is if theyre in constant pain, then its time. If it was just incontinence, I wouldnt consider it. That being said he looks like he has major arthritis.
Our oldest dog is somewhere between 17 and 19. We keep thinking we need to start preparing for that day, because we have a 4 year old. Dudes still cruising along like hes 10. Minor arthritis, but very minor. Still goes on walks, loses his shit at the window when anyone walks by, still plays. Last year he got his skull crushed and fukl body shaken by the head for a full minute by my neighbors pitt who broke into our yard when my partner got home from work and let them out. We watched the cameras and he was protecting our younger, much larger but scared of everything, dog. Spent 6 days in the hospital. Came home, he immediatly walked to the neighbors fence, looked for the pitt, didnt see it so he pissed on the fence and went inside. Within 2 weeks it was like it never happened. Dudes a hate fueled tank that refuses to die and im really happy about that.

If he needs a diaper and can barely walk...
34
u/Daetok_Lochannis 10h ago
I mean dude if he's getting the full time care he needs, there's nothing wrong with wearing a diaper as long as you're still sucking air. We only get the one go round, I'm sure this good boy is happy for every single second he gets with his best friend no matter how rickety his body feels.
6
u/Strong_Recording_128 10h ago
Love this. Best thing I’ve read all day. My grandma wears diapers and can’t walk but she’s happy for every day.
7
u/Daetok_Lochannis 9h ago
Damned skippy. I'm sure when I'm in diapers I'll be clinging to every day I can get too. The idea that we're 'saving' animals from their own old age is selfish as hell, if you're not willing to wipe someone else's ass then don't start a long term relationship. That includes anyone, not just pets.

Depends...some dogs still know they are pooping in the house and aren't suppose to and get real sad about it.
2
u/Technical_Eye_4343 6h ago
If an animal is in pain and doesn't want to live, it will stop eating or drinking. I prefer to let nature make that decision than kill a beloved animal the moment the poor thing gets old.
7
u/piggy__wig 10h ago
Yes it’s time. In a diaper and can hardly walk. What kind of life is that? I feel sorry for it.
14
u/Mundane-Toe-7114 10h ago
It'd be hard to let the good boy go, my heart goes out to the owner. Who knows the life they have shared and been thru. Not everyone has the power to put them down.
4
u/mrefromnyc 10h ago
See if you feel the same when you’re in a diaper and your knees are shot but your mind is still strong.
4
u/wackbirds 10h ago
Hell, I'm 40 and you just described me pretty well for right NOW.
Edit. Oops, NM, missed the part about mind being string.

Yeah but I’m not a dog. Things are much different between people and dogs. Dogs are NOT people. If I was in diapers and couldn’t walk and have who knows how much pain, I wish I could get euthanized so there… I certainly wouldn’t want to live like that and I’m a person not a dog. Big huge difference!

My girl just turned 10 and is the sweetest dog you could ever ask for. Her arthritis is just starting and has an ear infection, so I’m required for her to get as much rest as possible over the next few weeks. I pray to whatever power there is in the universe to let me have her for as long as possible.

Awww, look at all that PROLONGED SUFFERING. It is quite selfish to keep an animal here when it hurts to move and bodily functions are failing. How can you feel good when it literally pains the dog to greet you? I would have already put this dog down to give it peace. I love my pets too luc to see them suffer.
1
u/Realistic-Ad7835 6h ago
he's wearing a damn diaper. if your dog can't control their bodily functions its time to euthanize them. that can't be a good quality of life.

Just put my family's dog Patches down about 2 months ago. She was almost 18. She was nearly blind from cataracts, completely deaf, her back legs didn't work well anymore because of the nerves in her spine not sending the right signals so she would fall over a lot and walked a lot like the dog in this video. But she still wagged her tail, she still loved treats and loved to be pet and cuddled with. There were multiple times over the last couple of years where she got really sick and we thought it was finally time, but we would give her a day or two to make sure and she would bounce back again so we kept putting it off. This dog was a damn fighter that's for sure. Once she stopped wagging her tail and started barely eating we knew it was time though. Me and my mom stayed with her the entire time while they gave her the shot. I put my face right up to hers and the very last thing she did during her life was lick my face one last time before she was just gone. I'm glad she passed peacefully and seemed to know and accept it, but I don't think I've ever cried as hard in my entire life as I did after that. It's so painful to watch your best friend grow old so much faster than we do. She was part of my life for half of my entire life, the house feels so much emptier with her gone now.
