I’m really curious what was in the package. I’m betting on it being dog food.

It would’ve been hilarious if it was a chewy box. Those are one of the worst boxes to see in ur truck

u/Fit_March_4279 14d ago

I really appreciate you for delivering my big Chewy box. I’m a senior with rotoscoliosis and it really helps me to get my dog’s food delivered. It’s not my fault that my dogs are on special diets and it arrives packed in dry ice.

My Petsmart doesn't treat their inventory right and I got rancid food and made my dog super sick. I'm sorry for my Chewy boxes but they keep my old decrepit dog alive, so I really appreciate whoever delivers it for me.

She never gets to meet them, but she's nice and probably also appreciates the good food deliveries.

He didn't bite you? Wth So he is supposed to wait to get bitten first.

1.2k

u/Hmmark1984 15d ago

yeah, an annoyingly large percentage of dog owners seem to think that just because they know their dog and that "they won't actually bite, they're just loud and energetic" that every other person should somehow just know that, and not be justifiably scared when a dog comes charging at them barking.

485

u/dontspillthatbeer 14d ago

Can’t count how many times off-leash dogs would approach my dog, their owners would always say “oh he’s friendly.” My dog is not okay with random dogs approaching. “Mine ISN’T!” I’d say. Idiots.

276

u/ilikebourbon_ 14d ago

“He’s friendly”

“I’m not!”

Usually works as well when I run into off leash dogs

154

u/showhorrorshow 14d ago

Or "he's friendly"

Then friendly dog proceeds to maul your dog. Seen that one enough times. Friendly with people doesnt mean friendly with other dogs.

85

u/ilikebourbon_ 14d ago

Or mauls you - got bit by my neighbors dog as he said “he’s friendly” I think in the middle of friend- I was I bitten. Dog was removed from the house

78

u/Violetz_Tea 14d ago

I scooped my then toddler up and held her in my arms as an off leash dog charged us. Her head was level with the dogs mouth beforehand and I was not taking the chance. The owner was trying to tell me after I didn't need to do that.

71

u/showhorrorshow 14d ago

Yep, all it take is a millisecond with an aggressive dog and your toddler is disfigured for life. Im sure your dog is just great but Im not willing to test that theory with my toddler's face, thanks.

I saw an off leash pitty running up to me and I quickly picked up shiba. A few seconds later I heard "don't worry she's friendly" as the dog was barking and jumping into the air.

Then I heard "oh shit! Harley get down"

That must have been when they realized I was holding my dog.

Three times, three, had this lady in my complex walking her aggressive dogs off leash. The third time I had my dog, an auntie mix, on my shoulder as her hellions were trying to trip me and drive me down, while all she does is repeat npc lines "oh, oh my, ooh, stop it." Went off on her so hard, screaming at the top of my lungs about putting them on a leash. Never saw them off leash again at least

I walk a old neighbour's old dog every few days, he DOES NOT do being approached. I take the long route around the park to avoid mrs-my-dog-is-friendly and her mutt. It runs 50m across the entire park, right at the boy I'm walking. His instant response it to have the mutt's head in his jaws, and if I pulled the leash a second slower he woulda gotten a good bite in. Fuck lady, if he succeeded in his bite you'd have been arguing about my "dangerous dog", IT'S WHY HE'S FUCKING LEASHED

Dog groomer here. Can confirm. Almost every time we tell someone we've had to stop the groom, can't touch their feet, can't do nails etc because your dog is trying to bite me they always say "but they wouldn't REALLLY bite you" ah ok, he's just pretending eh? And would you like to pay for the plastic surgery to fix my hand before or after this "not a real bite"?

I was attacked by a dog twice in my life. One by my grandmother's Jack Russell terrier when I was 4, and when I was 8, by some guy's big black Lab. I don't have much of a story about the terrier except he bit my face something fierce and the only consolation I got was, "well, he's jealous." There's photos of me back then with my chin all scarred up.

The black lab, though. I was walking home alone from school after some after-school thing, and in some neighborhood, across the street, some guy was washing his car and there was a black lab next to him. As I walked past, the dog started a low threatening growl. The old dude said, "Oh, don't mind ol' King. He wouldn't hurt a f--" and before he finished his sentence, the dog just launched at me. Dashed across the street, and I know (and knew even then) the whole "don't run away from a dog attacking you" schtick, but I was 8 and my legs just started GOING.The dog quickly met up with me, knocked me to the ground, and just started biting my face. He got my chin real good, tore it up, and as he was going to my neck, I managed to get my arms up and block him. By this point, the old man had rushed across the road, had "King" by the collar, and was trying to hold him back. I remember the hollow "clock" noise the jaws made trying to bite me again. Meanwhile the old guy was screaming at King and hitting him on the head with something, some rod-shaped object.

Then something happened that was worse, but I don't think reddit wants to hear it, because that guy was doing everything he could to get the dog off of me. Let's just say he resorted to desperate measures no owner should face.

Once the dog was free of me, I just ran. The guy shouted after me, because my face was probably coated with blood, but I just ran and ran. I think he wanted me to come back to see if I needed an ambulance, I am not sure. I made it home, cleaned up, and my chin is messed up to this day (I am 58, have a beard to hide it). My parents DGAF, but that was a different issue. I was terrified of dogs for a long, long time. Sometimes I have flashbacks of that encounter in my nightmares.

The point is, "my dog wouldn't do that" is not an excuse. They might. You don't know.

u/queefplunger69 15d ago

First responder here who also goes into peoples houses for a living. I hear at least a few times a month “oh don’t worry he’s friendly”, to which I say yeah to you, he doesn’t know me and I’m in his house. If you want me to come in and help you need to put your dog in a bedroom or outside or I’m not coming in.

36

u/kk451128 14d ago

It’s this right here. When I was growing up, we had a German Shepherd. Great dog, very friendly…as long as all the rules were being followed. The house we lived in had a front door, and a back door from the garage, so the rule was simple- family used the back door, visitors used the front door. And she was great when visitors came to the front door- tail wagging, happy to see you.

We were hosting Thanksgiving one year, and my grandmother and grandfather were bringing over a bunch of extra chairs and stuff, and my father, being the courteous son, said “oh, just pull right in the garage, makes it a snap to carry everything in”. My grandfather got to the back door, and this dog would not let him in. Growling, barking, the whole bit. He didn’t live here, and he wasn’t following the rules.

Grandpa went around to the front, and…no problems. Wagging tail, happy dog. “Oh, it’s a friendly dog, they won’t do anything “. No, because all your experience is in situations the dog is comfortable with.

I think the problem with dog owners is that they think dogs will work like people. Like children.

I worked at a vet clinic for a looooong time and most dog's owners are really bad at acting "shocked" when their shitty pitty or completely unsocialized aussiedoodle inevitably tries to bite staff when we go to get a heartworm test or something else that's moderately uncomfortable.

Like.. you know you created a monster. You just think that because he doesn't act that way in the confines of your home, you can just forget about it and do absolutely nothing to fix it until Sadie's next yearly visit. Then you can just act surprised again.

I used to deliver pizzas. I once delivered to a house where a small kid answered the door when a dog charged past them snarling and pinned me against the porch railing. I had to use the pizza delivery bag still with pizzas inside as a shield between me and its teeth. Still ended up with scratches all up and down the lower half of my body. Fuck irresponsible owners.

1.6k

u/Vitruvian_Link 15d ago edited 14d ago

That is the exact situation that put me in the hospital when I was 8.

Went to a friend's house to play, she answered and her dog broke down the screen door and mauled me.

My parents asked ME if I wanted the dog put down, of course I said no, but that's not a decision for a child. That dog was a menace and could have killed me, of course it should have been put down.

Edit: to answer questions.

Yes, the dog was trained. It was a police dog so it was specifically trained to take people down. The dog was a weapon.

No, it was not a pit bull, it was a German shepherd.

No, I am not upset with my parents. They are wonderful parents, they just made a poor decision in this instance. They usually erred on the side of my agency to make my own decisions.

421

u/HombreDelMar247 14d ago

We had neighbors with a seemingly friendly dog who attacked one of my friends one day while we were playing baseball. He had to get a bunch of stitches.

They paid for the medical bills and had got rid of the dog, I assume it was put down but who knows. They were honest about the situation.

So many people not only own aggressive dogs but encourage the behavior then act like it's the victim's fault when the dog attacks.

If I was a delivery driver I would carry some bear mace as that often is a good enough deterrent against a charging dog. There is a YT video of a bicyclist who often encounters dogs in rural areas, the mace instantly makes them back off.

197

u/WorkerPrestigious960 14d ago

Man I just got back into biking. The other day I was riding down a road in the county, but not like a backroad or anything, a well trafficked road. And I hear this weird click-tapping noise growing behind me and once I realized what it was I yelled at him and sped up and he backed off. He didn’t seem like one of the dangerous ones, just in it for the chase, but you never know. Just reminds me I gotta watch out for that shit, I’ll probably get some bear mace now, glad you brought that up.

I feel bad for the dog in the video because it’s the dumb fucking owner’s fault, but I put no blame on the delivery man for his actions, you can’t take risks with a charging animal. I have a very sweet older dog that I know 100% would never hurt anyone, but I still don’t take chances with that shit, you can’t just let dogs run free like that. I’m sorry for what happened to your friend, I hope he recovered well.

63

u/Sea_Evidence5138 14d ago

for a second there I really thought bear mace was a huge ass mace to whack bears with.

31

u/GeneralHerp 14d ago

The mace you were thinking of might arouse the bear, “oh, you like to put up a fight?” bear mace is more, “what the fuck are all these bees in my eyes? This stinky meal sucks.”

If you rode a bike past my house and my dog charges, absolutely mace his ass. Literally best case scenario. He learns a lesson, someone doesn’t get hurt.

This is an edit for everyone who very much misunderstands what I’ve typed out.

I do not let my dog out like a wild animal. He is not an aggressive dog or breed. I do train him. IF for whatever reason he got out and was being a dumbass, I value YOUR RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF. For those of you saying that I should be lynched, you are part of the problem. Go touch grass.

Jogger here. Tried OC spray on a dog on my regular route. Other joggers left sticks at different ends of the block to hit it with, but it was legit aggressive snarling teeth out scary and I got tired of basically fleeing the last part before her go back to his yard. So squirt squirt and as I rounded the bend the dog was still just standing where I’d left him, stunned. Never saw that dog come out on me again.

Have people ever seen a dog run?
Even slow dogs are usually a lot faster than humans if they are not sprinters, while the fastest dogs are like 3x+ the speed of most people.
Also most dogs love to chase....

I am a dog owner for decades now and have been in dicy situations.....kicking their head usually was the best choice if the conflict couldnt be avoided.

9

u/Necessary-Lack-4600 14d ago

turns out one of them is male and one is female and i just stepped on breeding grounds.

as soon as i hit the sidewalk of the house the male started snipping at my shoes and ankles. pissing me off and making me jump every 5 seconds.

i shit you not this fucking dog spun around hopped up and grabbed under my kneecap. went right through both sides of the extra skin.

If you have a dog and are expecting a delivery, keep them away from your door.

Yeah I'ma huge dog lover and hate animal cruelty but this was absolutely justified! With all the dogs and various quality owners out there he really can't just assume this is just an excited well behaved dog. The kind of person that would let an unleashed dog charge a delivery person, or any stranger for that matter, really asks some questions for how well trained it actually is (read how good of a trainer the owner actually is). He may be the best boy that would never bite, but how tf is anyone supposed to know that before the fact.

65

u/I-Kneel-Before-None 14d ago

My brother had a dog that was super well behaved. He'd let my toddler neice ride on his back. He was super gentle and never showed any aggression ever. We were at a lake house one day and a guy came down on a bike. The wheels spooked him for some reason and he bit the guy. He looked scared but also like he knew he did wrong and was confused. Luckily the guy just wanted to see his shot records and my brother paid for the stitches. He didn't escalate it from there. I'm far from an expert, but I'm not sure there is a such thing as a dog that would never bite.

41

u/Karn_Gentrified 14d ago

I was mauled by a dog when I was 9 years old. It was my friends dog that I knew very well and had interacted with on many many occasions.

It still didn’t matter.

I needed almost 400 stitches. 2 different plastic surgeries, one of which completely reconstructed my nose and missing nostril and I still have scars today from my forehead to my nostril down the bridge of my nose and along my cheek from my ear to my neck. The dog turned its head when it attacked me, the bottom jaw was on my bridge, and the top was on my ear.

All I did to start it was ring the doorbell.

I’ve only been bitten by a dog one time in my life and it was when I was working as a pizza delivery driver. I didn’t have as quick of a reaction time as this guy and didn’t realize what was happening until the dog’s jaw was already clamped around my ankle. luckily I had pants and long socks on, so it hardly broke skin, but that didn’t make it any less stressful at the time

I've owned dogs for 30 out of my 40 years on this planet, it's basic common decency. If your dog is going to be around unfamiliar people, secure your dog, doesn't matter if its a 4kg Maltese terrier or a 50kg rottweiler.

But this rule is ESPECIALLY true if somebody is coming into your dogs home. Of course your dog is potentially going to want to protect it's home, or at least try and warn off any unfamiliar people.

I don't know why you'd ever have your dog unsecured at all unless they're a livestock guardian on the job or something similar.

I've had dogs all my life and I just don't get why people would risk things like that.

u/Astralglamour 15d ago

Youre supposed to wait until it bites you, shredding your leg or arm which you rely on for work- and then they'll say "Hes never done that before!"

651

u/BigMack6911 15d ago

That's exactly what happened when I got bit then I had to goto the dr and pay for it myself. Fuck them shitty dog owners

216

u/Astralglamour 15d ago

Yeah, people say sue them but many of these people don't have much money, or insurance.

132

u/imdstuf 15d ago

Plus money doesn't resolve permanent scars.

119

u/That-Employment-5561 15d ago

Or permanent injuries.

You can 100% lose all functionality of a limb through a dog bite. Tendons. Nerves. Many things to fuck up. Things hard to repair. Sometimes impossible.

75

u/Rivendel93 15d ago

Yeah, my high school friend got attacked by a dog, it scarred his neck up and his arm and he had nerve issues his entire life in his arm and hand.

He did get paid a lot though, but money doesn't fix nerve damage.

60

u/That-Employment-5561 15d ago

Yeah, people tend to look at those payouts as wins when they are literally financial representation of statutory loss.

If you offered me 500k to amputate my right arm, I'd turn you down; gaming, writing, drawing, riding a bike, riding a motorcycle, wilderness camping, drumming... I'm using that arm; but somehow getting 500k for losing the functionality of my arm is supposed to be cause for celebration, people acting like one won the lottery.

After my eyes and my sense of taste, the functionality of my arms is my most treasured possession, I have a hard time imagening a life without it. I'd probably opt out rather quick if I was in that position, unless I found ways to cope.

54

u/Swimming-Fondant-892 15d ago

People have no concept that their body is the single most important possession a person has.

Yeah, my friend who got attacked was a young pro surfer that was sponsored by Quicksilver I believe, and that's why he ended up being paid a couple million because he lost out on probably 10s of millions in future losses.

He was able to surf still, but not at the level he obviously had prior to the nerve damage.

He was such a good guy as well, haven't seen him in a few years, but I know he struggled big time due to the trauma as well as the physical pain.

In case people are curious about the attack, he was just walking home from school and a dog just ran up to him and latched onto his neck, the owner did come out and try to help but the dog just shredded his neck and arm.

He nearly bled out, but was luckily saved by a trauma surgeon and then multiple surgeries and years of physical therapy.

I used to walk back and forth from my apartment to a friends house about a mile away before I had a car and it was usually late at night so I carried a knife on me. Some dude's massive pitbull came charging out of his yard viciously barking at me at 2AM while I was walking next to cars in the road and I just instinctively pulled my knife out and stabbed it in the neck the second it was in biting distance. I don't ever want to have to harm an animal but I'm not potentially ending up on the ground with a dog that is entirely capable of killing me. People need to control their dogs better, I can't imagine that dog survived but I didn't stick around to let the owner confront me about it. It was a shitty neighborhood to begin with.

One of the gnarliest things I saw as nurse in the OR was a dog bite. The guy had been but by his neighbor's unleashed dog when it attacked his dog. He attempted to separate the two, and got bit on the thigh.

The guy had come in to have the wound surgically rinsed and debrided for the third time becuase it just would not heal due to all of the gnarly bacteria that were left in his flesh from the bite. The wound had just become deeper and wider as time had gone on. There was two main puncture sites from the canines and one or two others from the other incisors. It did not look good.

Needless to say, I have been much more cautious around dogs since seeing that.

Edit: braided to debrided

This reminded me of my mandatory military service where the instructions were that only if someone shoot you and injure you, you can retaliate with the assault rifle while on guard duty. Someone commented on that "if I see someone with an knife attacking me I'm emptying my magazine on him" the answer was that this would get him imprisoned he answered "I don't care, I'd be alive". We all laughed.

14

u/ClamPaste 15d ago

Well, the instructions given were incorrect anyway. Opportunity, capability and intent in this case shows that the use of deadly force is authorized. You don't have to be actively taking a bullet to defend yourself or others lol.

I did seasonal help for UPS way back in college and they had just upgraded the device that you used to scan all the packages. The new one was smaller and easier to hold with one hand. The veterans said they liked the old on better because you could use it as a weapon against dogs.

11

u/CreaminEagle 14d ago

The new one is pretty good too. But definitely doesn’t have the weight of the old one. The old one made me confident in battle.

u/nunchyabeeswax 15d ago

The right thing to do is what this delivery person did. Always defend yourself - dog bites are no joke, and that dog was big enough to cause serious damage. A dog's attack on the groin area is no joke.

I'd say this: I'm an animal lover, I love dogs, and I hate animal cruelty.

But a person has the right to self-defense, and even kill a charging animal on the spot.

If that worker had a gun (legally) and had shot the dog dead, I would still say it is legitimate self defense.

The onus on dog owners is to keep them on a leash. Know your pet's temperament, understand their psychology, in particular if it is a rescued animal with God knows what PTSD.

35

u/Cattle13ruiser 15d ago

The onus on dog owners is to keep them on a leash.

Know you have a dog protective of its territory.

Make an online purchase.

Don not secure the dog when expecting the delivery.

Dog protects, delivery driver reacts.

Owner - surprised pikachu face.

Exactly this, I don't understand how owners of aggressive dogs don't get this. Also the owner doesn't know what else others have been through, probably that delivery driver has been bit before. 52

u/pacgaming 14d ago

Wife and I complained to our apartment complex that dogs were off their leashes. My dog is kind of a pussy so it’s scared of all other dogs. I guess other dogs can tell? So they always rush her. 3 separate issues had happened over the span of like 6 months where and unleashed dog rushed her. 1 even bit her a bit before I was able to kick it off.

I had a neighbor that smokes weed right outside the complex (right in front of an elementary school btw) and also has his dog with him off leash. His dog is genuinely a sweetheart and never bothered mine, but I guess he had gotten a memo about dogs having to be leashed from now on in our complex because one morning he straight up tried to fight me. He was like “no dogs here would ever try to hurt your dog” brother it’s already happened 3 times. “Oh well mine never would!” It just doesn’t matter, keep your dogs leashed!!!

Edit - some of you need this shit spelled out apparently: an unrestrained dog is a liability for you, your dog and anything/anyone that dog decides is a threat that day and is bitten. I don't care if Peaches doesn't normally bite, someone doing their job approaching a property with an unrestrained and charging dog doesn't know that. If you still cannot understand this after reading this, give up your dogs so a responsible owner can care for them before they pay the price for your stupidity and carelessness. Read it as many times as it takes.

Dog should've been inside since it looks like an open yard with no gate to confine. (Raises the question, if someone is walking by on the sidewalk, would the dog also charge?)

And if the dog is outside, at least have it where it cannot charge at people. Like, have it on a leash tied to something? I mean, the owner is out with the dog so it shouldn't be an issue.

I don't don't know why you'd have your dog not on a leash when you have an open yard that's connected to a street.

Edit: For people who don't know and are saying"well what if he has an electric fence?", dogs can still (and frequently do) get past electric fences. It's annoying as all fucking hell. You spend that money. Set it up. And then the dog gets scared, excited, or is extremely motivated and now suddenly you are chasing your dog as he's running down the street.

60

u/sp3kt4t3 15d ago

I’ve been charged a hundred times as a runner. Not been bitten, luckily, but I always have to turn to face them, yell, stand my ground, etc. I never turn my back to them after and don’t begin running again till I’m a safe distance away from the home the dog came from. It’s very unsettling and annoying every time.

20

u/Dependent_Rain_4800 15d ago

I'd take pepper spray with me. It's only a question of time that you encounter a dog that freaks out instead of bail out.

24

u/HotCheetoEnema 15d ago

I take a stun gun bc the lady across the street hits her untrained dog and it’s a matter of time before it gets off leash and shows the word the aggression it was taught.

Yeah, I have a dog that hates strangers and if he somehow got out and charged someone like this, I would not blame them at all for throwing a box at him. I'd probably thank them for effectively preventing a real accident, and, of course, profusely apologize that my dog was out at all.

Though, if they walked into the fenced off area that displays clear "beware of dog" signage and then did this... I might not be so nice. Though, that's obviously not the case here are there doesn't appear to be any fencing.

EDIT: To be clear, my dog has never escaped my yard, I don't ever intend for that to happen, and precautions are taken to ensure it doesn't.
