In case anyone doesn’t know what they are talking about they are referencing the book dungeon crawler carl and I highly recommend you listen to it on Audible
45
u/Henry-What 8h ago
Just finished book 2 on Audible. and the end had me absolutely crying, When they just accepted the Doomsday scenario and Donut curls up before saying "I know" I seriously can't wait until the greenlit show airs.

22
u/DannyFlubber 8h ago
I really enjoyed the series to a point. It got to where Carl was just talking to too many people, coordinating with many groups all at once and I couldn't remember who half of them were. It made me miss the times when it was just Carl and Donut wandering hallways confused. Feel like I lost the thread .
12
u/Arienna 6h ago
The most recent book 8 splits everyone back up and Carl has a brief intense relief about just being responsible for himself and Donut

You joke, but don’t cats actually think humans are weird-looking cats who can’t hunt? I swear I saw that somewhere
276
u/SomeDeafKid 8h ago
It's more like cats just have very inclusive ideas of who belongs in the colony. Mother cats will often feed each other's babies and even babies from other animals. So you're the huge colony member who has the food hookup but is kind of clumsy
→ More replies (1)133
u/NeoChrisOmega 8h ago edited 8h ago
I think the above comment is actually more accurate to the common idea of how cats view humans.
I've heard that dogs know we are not dogs, but see us as family members regardless. While cats see us as cats, but accept us regardless of how different we are from them
126
u/Donnicton 8h ago
Cats know we're not cats, simply because there are plenty of cats that are universally affectionate with unfamiliar humans but at the same time are broadly hostile to unfamiliar cats.
→ More replies (1)45
u/JamesGray 8h ago
I don't think that really conclusively proves anything. Giant hairless cats feed and pet me, I loved them. Not like those other furry little cats fuck with me and try to eat my food.
→ More replies (1)45
u/FacetNo6 8h ago
I mean does it matter in that case whether they see us as "giant hairless humans that feed + pet" vs "giant hairless cats that feed + pet"?
They don't have a concept of "cat" (or "dog"). They know we're not the same thing as normal cats.
→ More replies (1)22
u/Notactualyadick 7h ago
Woah, do we have a concept of ourselves......or are we just cats that think that they are dogs, but a really humans? And if we are, then aren't we all just trying to bark, but can only meow? Therefore dooming us into a spiral of mindless yowling at a universe that cannot allow us to figure out what we are, lest that clarity be its downfall? OH GOD! WHAT IS REALITY!?

I asked my cats and they said,”dont be ridiculous, you fetch us food and change our litter, now pet us until we get tired of it and attack your hand.”
10
u/paperplate209 8h ago
Its funny I've heard the opposite, cats know we arent cats, dogs think we are just weird dogs.
I wonder which is right. Im too lazy to find a source.
11
u/New-Independent-1481 5h ago
Dogs have human-only forms of communication and body language, and treat human babies and children very differently from any other creature. They definitely know we're not weird dogs.

That's a sweeping conclusion that someone on Tumblr reached based on observing cat behavior when in fact there are many more likely explanations for the same behavior.
4
u/NiteTiger 5h ago
I thought that cats know we're not cats, but regard us as kind of helpless sycophants. They bring us prey us prey, we don't eat it, and their kind of like "well, I tried"
13
u/jefftickels 8h ago
That's a thing you read on the internet sometimes, but no, they know we're not cats.
25
→ More replies (4)3
u/GREEN_Hero_6317 2h ago
I think it's more like cats just have three categories of beings: family, prey, and trespassers. If you live with them, you are family. And they judge anyone within the family as if they were cats, because usually they are cats.

u/sgates9008 9h ago
Recently read a couple books in the Cinder Spires series, and a key side character is a cat named Rawl, who can only speak to a few non-cats who can essentially speak cat.
Rowl is the most important character in the story, if you ask Rowl. Being declared "competent" by a cat is the highest of praise.

This made me think of the scene from The Chronicles of Narnia film where the kids first encounter Beaver and he exclaims that he's not gonna smell Peter's hand; the following exchange between Peter & Susan is amusing as well:
Susan: What are you doing?! We can't follow him!
Peter: He said he knows the fawn.
Susan: He's a beaver. He shouldn't be saying anything!

I always imagine we are blurting out random cat-words.
"Toaster!"
"Taxes!'
"BICYCLE!!!"
The cat hears a fight, but has no idea what it is about.
"Humans and their wizard shit again. You can find me under the bed when this all blows over. This is how you summon the vacuum you idiots."

u/ivycvae 6h ago
When my cat meows I try to mimic it as flawlessly as possible back. Most of the time I'm not very good but every now and then I'll do it so good she gets excited and starts talking a bunch, which I also try to copy, then she's visibly disappointed.. So I assume it goes something like:
Wendy cat: dinner time!
Me human: dinner time!
Wendy cat: oh shit! You finally got it! Hallelujah it's a gd miracle! It's about time, teach me how to open cans! Me human: Taco nice grains car sky curtain!
Wendy cat: long sigh45

Really cool you can see the cat sniffing wildly. They know we are not cats. Friends and family, but they know we are different species. The cat is smelling because it sounds like there are cats around, but it can't smell any. Its flight management computer is getting conflicting data.

u/Xzed090 7h ago
One of my cats heard this from my phone, looked around urgently for the source, then ran at and punched my other cat. Definitely some conflicting data there

Seriously, i know it's a joke and it's all fun and games for the people. But that cat is clearly stressed the fuck out, because it's a cat and it doesn't know that this is a joke.
84
u/Inevitable-Level-687 8h ago
I'm sure it'll get over it. If it was subjected to this 24/7 that'd be one thing, but making an animal uncomfortable every once in a while isn't going to put it in a kitty psychiatric hospital.

Not a cat expert, but that’s my thought. This is probably fine as a one off. The cat may have been unnerved due to the weirdness of it but unless it has severe anxiety issues it’ll get over it.

You are captures by hulking aliens with technology that goes beyond 3 dimensions.
They take you to another planet, or maybe another reality.
You can only communicate by showing them what you need, as they are physically unable to understand your language and you can't understand or even replicate the sounds they make.
Years pass by. You fall under a routine. They treat you well, but you can't leave this place.
Suddenly, 2 of the extra dimensional, gigantic aliens stare at each other and start screaming:
"Do you wanna go bruv? Im gonna shank yah innit?"
I don't know about you, but I would freak out too
