Back in my day you had to watch 10 minutes of commercials for 20 minutes of show.

We built a nation out of adverts. They come on, turn the volume down cause they’re loud as fuck, pop on the kettle, go to the loo, make your cuppa, pop a washing on, do a bit of hoovering and *then* it’s time to come back in time for the next part of the show.

In the UK, the electricity operators were told in advance when the breaks were going to happen because there could be such a huge surge in demand.

Back in those days you didn't have a choice. Streaming was supposed to be a simple exchange between content and money. Nothing else. Now is content at whatever quality the server feels like, commercials and taking money.

I got bombarded with gambling adds at some point. 3 in a row for different casinos. I have zero connection to the habit. Eventually the laws coughed up and banned them till 12 at night.

When I was a kid my cousins went to the UK and when they got back they said over there every ad break has more ads than the last. I remember thinking 'thats just not sustainable'. And then I learned about hyperbole. I'm sure if they could get away with it thats exactly what they would do.
