I say this as an English dude. My countryman are going to be fucking insufferable for the next three or four decades if they win the world cup.

Well, yeah. We used to be an empire, and now all we have left to brag about is electric kettles that boil a bit quicker

When are they ever out of a socket? That connection is solid.

u/teakhop 1d ago
When you leave them unplugged and lying around - they often naturally turn over pins-up.
Having said that, as someone who lived abroad for a bit, AUS/NZ ones can also be painful if you stand on them (although you can't stand on them end-on), as they're much thinner prongs than the UK ones, so standing on the AUS/NZ ones orthogonally is still very painful.
Neither are as painful as Lego though...

Those kettles were originally invented in America

Yeh and it was famously shite and took ten minutes to boil water until someone in Birmingham (the real Birmingham) made a vastly more efficient one.

Just going to say it, i live in Chile and we are already tired of Argentina and Messi. You believe the next four decades are going to be insufferable? The next 100 years are going to be terrible if Argentina wins.

As will be the Scottish, Irish and Welsh if they lose. It’s swings and roundabouts.

I think we have a reasonable shot at getting past Argentina. They are not the Argentina of yore. Don't see us beating Spain.

Ah yes, Crossed. Makes Garth Ennis' other works (The Boys, Preacher) seem like children's stories.
If any studio ever dare make that into a TV show they'll have my utmost respect.12
u/WorthMysterious1648 1d ago
Blugh, not me, the original first story was pretty decent and would make an ok miniseries with some heavy edits, but anything after that just has no place on TV, so much of it is gore for the sake of gore and it’s just wholly without merit

There's a movie called The Sadness that is basically Crossed in everything but name and characters.

The director of The Sadness is making a Crossed Movie adapting the first comic

The entire world except Argentina is in this picture.

My Irish co-workers are split about 80-20 in favour of Argentina. The 'anyone but England' feelings run deep.

The chilean people are tired of Argentina and Messi, so we go with the "anyone but Argentina".

Can anyone explain this? I take it from the comments that it has something to do with the Crusades, but I don't know what "twonks" are.
18
u/neorapsta 1d ago
Twonks is the name of the comic.
Basically the England face paint design and possibly flag originated from the Brits getting sunburnt in their armour.

Did Crusaders from England paint their face with that flag design? I'm ignorant enough that the only face paint I can think of in the region is the face paint I saw in the movie Braveheart.
EDIT: Can anyone explain why this comment is being downvoted?

u/RedDirtNurse 1d ago
Ahhhh, good old Braveheart... the most historically inaccuate movie of all time, and one which draws an inordinate outporing of loathing from the Scotch* themselves.
Source: * I'm Scots BTW

Historically, not that we're aware of. I think.
I'm guessing the downvotes are people thinking you're ignoring my reply rather than asking a new related question.
Ignore the Scot reply, Scottish TV is just reruns of Braveheart and Bernistoun.
They have a New Year's tradition called First Footing, where you drag a hapless stranger into your house, watch Braveheart and all shout FREEDOM at the end.

So then why would there be face paint in a cartoon about the Crusades?

u/KentConnor 23h ago
It's not face paint it's a tan line

The original comment was about the origin of an English face paint design:

Since you apparently dont understand this comic at all
All but one of these characters are Modern English Football Fans with the flag painted on their faces
The other one is a crusader/English knight from the past.
The idea is that the design of the fan's face paint is inspired by their ancestors tan lines.
