wait how does the flag thing wok here

I say this as an English dude. My countryman are going to be fucking insufferable for the next three or four decades if they win the world cup.

u/J_Dom_Squad 1d ago

Good thing we don't really need to worry about that.

u/_lippykid 1d ago

Well, yeah. We used to be an empire, and now all we have left to brag about is electric kettles that boil a bit quicker

128

u/chux4w 1d ago

You say that like it's not something to brag about.

44

u/referman12 1d ago

And the three pin plug

26

u/_lippykid 1d ago

All fun and games until you step on one of those bastards barefoot

17

u/MellowedOut1934 1d ago

When are they ever out of a socket? That connection is solid.

10

u/teakhop 1d ago

When you leave them unplugged and lying around - they often naturally turn over pins-up.

Having said that, as someone who lived abroad for a bit, AUS/NZ ones can also be painful if you stand on them (although you can't stand on them end-on), as they're much thinner prongs than the UK ones, so standing on the AUS/NZ ones orthogonally is still very painful.

Neither are as painful as Lego though...

Spain also used to be an empire.

And vacuum cleaners

4

u/_lippykid 1d ago

Henry for sure. I’ve had 3 Dysons and they all broke

2

u/OverSoft 1d ago

The entire continent of Europe has those.

1

u/luftlande 1d ago

Yeah... not a lot of positivity going around over there lately eh?

-1

u/Mr_Derisant 1d ago

Those kettles were originally invented in America

0

u/Facelegarm 1d ago

Yeh and it was famously shite and took ten minutes to boil water until someone in Birmingham (the real Birmingham) made a vastly more efficient one.

3

u/Mr_Derisant 1d ago

Still it was the proof of concept. The first pancake is always a mess

"Two world wars and one world cup / Screamed by the desperate divided crutch / Used to have an empire, then we grew up / Lost everything, who gives a fuck?!" - Jamie T

23

u/SkollFenrirson 1d ago

No need to worry about that, apparently.

15

u/Golden_Alchemy 1d ago

Just going to say it, i live in Chile and we are already tired of Argentina and Messi. You believe the next four decades are going to be insufferable? The next 100 years are going to be terrible if Argentina wins.

8

u/VertexBV 1d ago

You can replace Chile with any other South American country and it still works.

13

u/OurManInJapan 1d ago

As will be the Scottish, Irish and Welsh if they lose. It’s swings and roundabouts.

12

u/azthal 1d ago

Not really though.

If England lose the Scottish, Irish and Welsh will be annoying about it for a week, then they move on.

If England wins they will be annoying about it for decades.

5

u/Malvania 1d ago

problem solved

2

u/LuckyNumberHat 1d ago

Now that England lost, are they staying in the US or are they...

3

u/Loki-L 1d ago

They will have to come up with a new song too "Two World Wars and One World Cup" won't work anymore.

4

u/Really_McNamington 1d ago

I think we have a reasonable shot at getting past Argentina. They are not the Argentina of yore. Don't see us beating Spain.

1

u/TallmanMike 1d ago

Rest easy, chap.

1

u/Eva-JD 1d ago

I honestly can’t decide who to root for tonight. I hope both teams loose lol

40

u/guyinsunglasses 1d ago

I can believe this is how the English came up with their flag

u/Xanthus179 1d ago

Always nice to take a break from the Crusades to enjoy some footie.

Ah yes, Crossed. Makes Garth Ennis' other works (The Boys, Preacher) seem like children's stories.
If any studio ever dare make that into a TV show they'll have my utmost respect.

12

u/WorthMysterious1648 1d ago

Blugh, not me, the original first story was pretty decent and would make an ok miniseries with some heavy edits, but anything after that just has no place on TV, so much of it is gore for the sake of gore and it’s just wholly without merit

8

u/lluerdna 1d ago

There's a movie called The Sadness that is basically Crossed in everything but name and characters.

3

u/caiomrobeiro 1d ago

The director of The Sadness is making a Crossed Movie adapting the first comic

2

u/AMassiveFuckingTwat 1d ago

There's a movie in the works.

18

u/mansonearrn 1d ago

WOh now it makes sense

4

u/SumonaFlorence 1d ago

He praised that sun.

42

u/lafeber 2d ago

The entire world except Argentina is in this picture.

46

u/Libarate 1d ago

My Irish co-workers are split about 80-20 in favour of Argentina. The 'anyone but England' feelings run deep.

5

u/Golden_Alchemy 1d ago

The chilean people are tired of Argentina and Messi, so we go with the "anyone but Argentina".

8

u/Own_Seat913 1d ago

Tell that to Ireland, Scotland, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc.

2

u/Nico280gato 1d ago

Be real odd for scotland, considering scottish people died in the falklands.

Islas Malvinas

5

u/ncvbn 1d ago

Can anyone explain this? I take it from the comments that it has something to do with the Crusades, but I don't know what "twonks" are.

18

u/neorapsta 1d ago

Twonks is the name of the comic.

Basically the England face paint design and possibly flag originated from the Brits getting sunburnt in their armour.

5

u/ncvbn 1d ago edited 1d ago

Did Crusaders from England paint their face with that flag design? I'm ignorant enough that the only face paint I can think of in the region is the face paint I saw in the movie Braveheart.

EDIT: Can anyone explain why this comment is being downvoted?

5

u/RedDirtNurse 1d ago

Ahhhh, good old Braveheart... the most historically inaccuate movie of all time, and one which draws an inordinate outporing of loathing from the Scotch* themselves.

Source: * I'm Scots BTW

4

u/neorapsta 1d ago

Historically, not that we're aware of. I think.

I'm guessing the downvotes are people thinking you're ignoring my reply rather than asking a new related question.

Ignore the Scot reply, Scottish TV is just reruns of Braveheart and Bernistoun.

They have a New Year's tradition called First Footing, where you drag a hapless stranger into your house, watch Braveheart and all shout FREEDOM at the end.

0

u/ncvbn 1d ago

Historically, not that we're aware of. I think.

So then why would there be face paint in a cartoon about the Crusades?

4

u/KentConnor 23h ago

It's not face paint it's a tan line

0

u/ncvbn 18h ago

The original comment was about the origin of an English face paint design:

Basically the England face paint design and possibly flag originated from the Brits getting sunburnt in their armour.

1

u/KentConnor 17h ago

The characters in the comic have their face painted, and fans irl do it too...

1

u/KentConnor 17h ago

Since you apparently dont understand this comic at all

All but one of these characters are Modern English Football Fans with the flag painted on their faces

The other one is a crusader/English knight from the past.

The idea is that the design of the fan's face paint is inspired by their ancestors tan lines.

RIP media literacy

u/ncvbn 11h ago

OK, thank you, I didn't know there was a soccer reference being made.
