Self Mod change and state of the sub

Mod change:

As some may know long time mod u/Kyengen is stepping down on the 18th. I’ve been a mod here for a bit now and will be taking the reins.

I like to think Kyengen kept things pretty well regulated and fair, and in taking over I will try to run the sub just the same. So no worries, no major changes to be expected immediately.

State of the sub:

Now I know there are a few grievances concerning spam and “NSFW” material. As of now they are being reviewed as they’re reported and approved/removed on a case by case basis.

Other than that I don’t think there’s many disruptors in the sub. I’d like to hear some ideas on things the community would like to see changed, implemented, or removed.

In the meantime I will be looking for another person or two to help moderate. If you’re interested just message me directly.

Help How do I make cardboard look like metal or plastic please!

Post image

Last year I made this chest piece of combat armor from fallout four and I just used thin foam pieces and painted them green. This worked okay but I'm remaking it to be 100x better and I have tried EVERYTHING I could find. Modge podge, wood glue, wall filler, foam. And everything you could still see the cardboard texture through. The wall filler would just crack and be too thin and you could see a bumpy texture form underneath in the cardboard. I thought about just buying aluminum flashing and cutting real metal but there's no way I'll have to do that for every metal looking project. Please help me find another solution guys

Help EVA shoes/boots longevity?

Post image
76 Upvotes

So I'm going to attempt to make some boots out of EVA for a GoW cosplay and several tutorials I've seen have basically included gluing/screwing foam (usually 10mm or that foam flooring for like gyms) to the bottom of some shoes and building off of that.

Well if I'm averaging like 20k steps a day at a con, how long should I expect these things to last? I already have to worry about the glue holding up and it not falling apart from movement, I don't want to fear literally walking through them as well.

Help Need help taking apart glued 3d print.

So this is my first ever project out of a 3d print, bought it off Etsy as a diy kit and I’m just having so many issues with it but the second one that needs tackled is the guy, even though listed as diy, still glued some of the parts together haphazardly. Read that acetone will eat the glue but not the pla so I used some of that and it’s just not working as I thought. The acetone dries so fast that the residue glue hardens again and spreads all around leaving this white stuff. any help at all would be useful

Help Sound system inside a cosplay mask

Hello,
does anyone have any experience with sound systems inside masks ? I am making a plague doctor cosplay and would like a voice changer inside the mask (not mounted on the chest, because I want the electronics inside the mask for easy removal and not fiddling with multiple cables going through my shirt and whatnot). I am using an INMP411 omnidirectional microphone, MAX98457 amplifier and a Teensy 4.0 microcontroller, with a 2W 8ohm speaker.

My main problem is the feedback. Unfortunately, the microphone and speaker are a few cm apart, and even if I tried all manners of software noise cancellation, AEC, half-duplexing, adaptive notching, low and high passes, foam insulation (not neoprene, don't have that one), pressing the speaker against a mesh leading to the outside of the mask (like a grate), the mask resonates so loudly that the microphone picks that up anyway and creates a horrible pitch reverb feedback.

I'm at my wits end, been at it since morning and nothing works so far. Tried looking for unidirectional microphones, but couldn't find any ones that wouldn't cost an insane amount.

If anyone has any tips, it would help me immensly!

Help Advice on keeping acrylic sticks in place for tail

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello! This is my first time making a large prop like this. The design is mostly my own headcanons, and my interpretation includes the tail design looking like empty space inbetween the base and tip of the tail. I intended to stick em together with two acrylic sticks I got from the baking section at Michaels and while attempting to hot glue them together, the pieces ended up falling apart after testwearing. I'm wondering if I made the tip of the tail TOO heavy or if it could be solved.

Another note I'll mention, I built the tail with cardboard and shaped it with paper mache so I'm worried about that weighing down the tail in some sense.

(also please do not mind the state of my room Im desperate to get this solved)

Really fun to make! Modelled in Blender, printed on Bambu P1P in 3 parts, sanded for hours then painted with grey base paint then silver, and roughed up with sandpaper and dark brown acrylics for weathering. The feather is made out of foam with posing wire through the middle.

Bookbinding isn’t my usual craft! But I took a stab at it for this palm quire and I’m pretty happy with the results. Faux leather and handmade paper, stitched together by machine. If I make another one I think I’m going to handstitch the cover on with a thicker thread to give it a better handmade appearance.

Help Need help with making a eyeless mask I can see out of

Post image

I really want to cosplay as Lurien The Watcher from Hollow Knight. Looking at his mask, it is clear that it would be hard to see out of it. I consider myself an amateur, and can’t really afford expensive supplies. This isn’t really meant to be a high-end cosplay, just a simple mask that I’ll be able to see out of for a few hours at least. I have cardboard, but I’m assuming that that might not necessarily work? However, I am willing to go to a local craft store, such as Hobby lobby, to get extra materials I might need. Looking at where the hole in the mask from the image is, it seems like if I cross eye, I will be able to see through it. However, that probably would give me a pretty bad headache. Is there anyway I would be able to make extra holes of the sort for eyes that would not be very visible?

The sword is made up of entirely of wood that painted, the issue is that the grip hurt my palm when I tried swinging it too much so what should I do

I was thinking of sanding it down or removing those part and replacing with with a softer material I’m not sure as I still wanna have that blocky look
