History Please help find footage of the 1984 Canberra Festival "Goat Mail" event

I am a philatelist, that means I collect and study postal history, like stamps, postcards, envelopes etc. I focus on post sent by unusual means, such as rocket post, dog post, zeppelin post etc.

One that I love is the 1984 Canberra Festival "Goat Mail" event, in which, on the 11th of March, 1984, a female goat named Joyce carried about 1000 letters via cart to the post office. The goat was accompanied by a motorcycle police escort. According to Capital Philately Vol. 11 No. 1 November 1992, the event was broadcast on "local television", which I have found out via Capital Philately August 1984 was actually "Channel 7 Canberra" (known throughout history by many different names).

I have tried to find this footage as I find the event fascinating and would like to better understand the Goat Mail items in my collection as well as preserve the history of the event. I have searched for the footage on YouTube, the Internet Archive, and I have tried to find Channel 7's own archives, which seem not to be publicly available.

The Goat Mail event was created by a man named Mike Hayes, and the stamps were designed by Ingrid Slamer using rouletted perforations. The footage would be a valuable part of the history of these items, and I would love to see just how it looked.

I am a collector of antiques and not a media-hunter, so my search definitely does not encompass all possible sources of the footage or methods of finding it. If anybody can help find this footage of the event, it would genuinely mean a lot to me. I can provide images of the newsletters where I found the relevant information as well as images of the goat mail items themselves.

Loud Bang Who took a massive shit all over the Petrie st entrance to Canberra Centre?

My God, does it stink. A cleaner put a single sad "Wet Floor" sign down before walking away to think about their life. Meanwhile the Friday crowd is stomping through your chunky mudslide before the smell hits them and they realise they need to go wash their shoes.

I have a dog and a baby, and while I'm not a Turd Expert, it smells decidedly more human than dog

Recommendations Anxiety support/ meeting groups in Canberra?

Sorry for the odd title, but I’m someone that has pretty near crippling anxiety among other things, and one of the things my therapist and psychiatrist have encouraged me to do is to try and get more accustomed to interacting with people, but I am genuinely scared to death of people, but I think I’d find it a bit less daunting to interact with other people if I knew they also had similar struggles, and it being in a group would help make me less intimidated, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any groups that exist to be like ways for people with anxiety to meet/ support each other? Ideally in person since that’s what my therapist recommended for me, but any online ones that you all know of would also be appreciated.
Sorry if I used the wrong flair for this post as well.

Image Rashays Belco and drawing on walls?

Me and my partner decided to go to Rashays in belco and we were kinda confused about how much writing and scribbles were across the restaurant. Like almost every surface is covered in crayon except the chairs and tables.

I’m wondering if it’s intentional or just years and years of kids drawing on walls? It’s a super bizarre

Recommendations Clubbing in Canberra

Are there any spots that are particularly good or places to avoid? I know fiction has a couple events, but I haven't seen much else. It's my first time going clubbing to not really sure how things work. I've checked a couple past posts on the subreddit, but all seem pretty out of date.

Let me know your experiences of what each club is like and which you think is best

Thanks in advance

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Rates Notice

Post image
83 Upvotes

I got my ACT Rates Notice today and it has a wonderful graph showing where all your taxes go.

However, I realised it doesn’t show ‘Debt Interest’ despite it costing around $1B per year, which would be the third highest spending on this graph.

Seems a bit misleading to not explicitly include it, doesn’t it?

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Is it just me or has this winter been unusually hot?

It might just be climate change, but it feels like we have had unusually hot and dry days all winter. While I don't want to complain ( the weather is beautiful) it has me a little worried for summer.

Recommendations To all lovely people of Canberra, I am feeling a bit lost with the Canberra job market – looking for some honest advice.

Feeling a bit lost with the Canberra job market – looking for some honest advice.

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Canberra on a Skilled (491) visa and have been actively applying for jobs in Marketing, Graphic Design, UI/UX, and Product Design.

I have over 10 years of experience, including working on large-scale digital products, design systems, branding, and marketing for one of India's biggest telecom companies. I came here excited to start the next chapter of my career, but the reality has been much tougher than I expected.

I've applied to a lot of roles, tailored my resume and cover letter for almost every application, updated my portfolio, and tried following all the advice I could find. Despite that, I haven't received a single interview.

I'm starting to wonder:

  • Is it because I don't have Australian experience?
  • Is the Canberra design market just very competitive?
  • Am I missing something that employers here expect?

I'm not looking for sympathy—I genuinely want to understand what I can do differently. If you've been through the same experience, especially as a migrant, I'd really appreciate hearing what worked for you.

Should I be networking more? Studying? Volunteering? Taking contract work? Or is it simply a matter of being patient?

Any advice, feedback, or even a reality check would mean a lot.

Thanks in advance.

Recommendations Crazy Hot Water System Electricity Use

Hi Everyone,

I posted a few weeks ago about a VERY high electricity bill with suspicions it was the hot water system.

I did in the end identify it was the problem and notified the Real Estate Agent, who kindly a week later sent a plumber who changed some valves. Apparently hot water was constantly leaking into the cold and this could be the cause of the excessive electricity usages.

Unfortunately the electricity usage of the hot water system is still excessive, so we have turned the system off and have been showering at gym - not ideal but the usage is costing us an insane amount.

The REA has suggested to us that this system just uses THAT much electricity, however, I can not see how a normal system uses this much. After weeks of showing evidence, and screen shots from our smart electricity meter they have agreed to send an electrician to investigate to see if there are any electrical faults with the system.

The hot water system alone accounts for 75% of the electricity usage and costs. With yearly electricity usage of hot water ONLY costing approx $2686. And our other electronics costing $887.82 for the year. Total approximate usage costs $3574 (not including service to the property charges).

My question is, am I delusional in thinking that this is INSANE for hot water for average use of 2 people taking maybe 5 minute showers? Does this system just cost that much to run? or is it likely not working properly?

We have lived with electric hot water before and NEVER had this high of a bill.

For context:

- 2 adults

-160L single element storage hot water system (electric) Rated power input: 3,600 W (3.6 kW)

- 3 room townhouse WITH solar panels

- hot water system constantly draws 1kwh every hour when on = about 24kwh a day

Here are the numbers and averages from the data I have collected over the last few weeks.

Link to original post with more information - https://www.reddit.com/r/canberra/comments/1ue932h/comment/otip8s0/?context=3

Kwh averages over 5 weeks from tracking hot water system being on or off
cost of usage only - worked out by kwh x $0.30
Spreadsheet tracking hot water system on/of, kwh, other electricity uses - blacked out when there was 4 ppl to not skew data

Recommendations Shoutout your local food joint you love

This isn't neighbourhood-specific, but I got lunch from BZBurger in Holt and honestly I can't believe I lucked into such a nice, simple and delicious burger joint in my neighbourhood. Delicious, fun, creative burgers. Also they run a cafe if you just want your coffee fix.

So what's yours? Fast food, restaurant, cafe or bakery, whatever, sound off and show some love.

Recommendations Bicycle parking at Canberra Hospital

I'll be working at the Canberra Hospital for a while and I'm considering bringing my bike to cycling to work. Is there a secure place to park and lock up the bike all day? My soon-to-be colleagues could not advice.

The Canberra Hospital map shows outside Building 1 or the Adult Mental Health Unit but google maps doesn't show it clearly.

When I check bike parking on parkopedia (dot) com (dot) au, it mentions a Bicycle Lot 2 but doesn't show it on the map and sticking in the hours, it says "The times you have selected exceed the maximum stay allowed for this parking spot". I suspect this site is geared to cars.

I hoping some one in the Canberra bicyclist community could advise

Events Bringing live music to Canberra

Very tired of seeing all the live music tours not coming to Canberra. I can understand when they go to other capitals but it hurts when you see regional cities get them (Newcastle for example)

What does Canberra need to bring these acts here?

Is it a decent venue? Places like the Baso are too small the convention centre doesn't feel right.

Are we just too small? I know we aren't huge but there has been some maturity of the city in the last decade.

Is it a cost thing? Insurance wise, venue wise. We do seem to over price things here

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED What improvements would you make to the Canberra-Sydney train?

I'd love to get your take on three quick questions:

  1. What non train or track improvement would you make to improve the train experience?
  2. When you go to Sydney, how do you usually get there, and why do you choose that option? (Driving, flying, coach, or train?)
  3. At what journey time or speed would you realistically switch to taking the train to Sydney as your main choice?

I recently wrote about how the bus connections for it are a huge issue.

Recommendations Recommendations for induction oven install and minor cabinet mods

Hi all. We're fairly new to Canberra so looking for a recommendation for an oven installation. We have one quote but it's a bit more expensive than i expected, so wanting to get a second to check pricing. Work will involve the below (we'll supply the appliances):

- replace existing dual fuel oven/stove with induction (so capping gas, removing existing appliance, install isolation switch and new circuit)

- install new rangehood, incl provide external ducting if needed

- minor cabinetry mods (remove 10cm strip of bench and cabinet that currently is joined to wall)

- possibly replace stainless steel splashback.

Any recs/advice appreciated!

Recommendations Bendy bus

Hello, I have a toddler and occasionally we will take the bus from one town centre to another, grab some lunch/do some shopping and then head back as an outing. She would like to catch a bendy bus the next time we do this. Are there any routes/times that would increase our chances of getting a bendy bus? I figured the busy routes and times are more likely to have it. Any guidance appreciated. Thanks!

Light Rail Google maps is not coping with lightrail closures

I have been given the run around in the last couple of weeks navigating to landmarks in Civic using Google Maps. It seems no-one on the lightrail project has been tasked with updating Maps with the various road closures around Commonwealth Ave - a standard thing for infrastructure projects in other cities. It's already complete chaos, they don't need to make it harder on people trying to get to unfamiliar places.
