Yes pull over and cover the entire road instead of one lane
91
u/FlorianTheLynx 23h ago
Yeah, he’d have been better staying left, it’s not like the lane wasn’t already blocked, so nobody was going to be rear-ending him.
17
u/kingdomecile 23h ago
Yep, that was definitely going to happen! I was driving on I-5 in Oregon when someone in Hyundai slightly side swiped a Semi truck traveling in the left lane. The truck driver just stopped in the left lane, didn’t pull over at all, while thr Hyundai pulled over on the right shoulder. It happened in front of me and I got through right away. I was gone for a good 2 hours, and when I was driving back home, traffic was still backed up for miles on the freeway.
Did I mention it was a Swift semi truck?

Is the best thing to film rather than stopping the truck?

u/xmastreee 23h ago
Pretty sure I would have passed the truck and tried my damndest to get the driver's attention, even to the point of gently brake checking him. But then I wouldn't have a cool video to show for it, and we know what's important, right folks?
58
u/unknownpoltroon 23h ago
No, if youre next to a truck and honking and leaning on the horn while pointing, and the asshole is that oblivious, he deserves all the fines

u/Agile-Hedgehog-7832 23h ago
but then you would not have a video posted on reddit where you can write what smart and moral things you would have done
27
u/Nasa_OK 23h ago
No they would have a video of a truck driver not paying attention and rearrendjng a car. Everyone in the comments would smugly say „and that’s why you don’t brake check a truck“
2
u/Da_Spooky_Ghost 21h ago
You could also wave your arms out the window and do the stop sign with your hand, point to the back of the truck, whatever you can to get their attention to pull over

Looks like China. The important thing is to not get involved. ANYTHING you do in that situation could open you up to liability.
Let's say you stop that truck... and someone hits it. They would go after you for stopping the truck there. As well as anybody else that could conceivably have contributed to the situation.
Many cultures have developed a master class in minding their own business.

Have you met any truck drivers? They’re consistently some of the most oblivious “I can do no wrong” dipshits on the road. How do you reckon the filmer stops the truck? By honking? Ignored. By getting in front of the 40+ ton truck and braking? They’ll swerve and go around, or just hit the car if the braking is severe because it’s not going to hurt their bumper
Safest thing is to get passed the truck or off the highway and call the cops to deal with it

If that’s a 25 ton steel coil?
About $10-25k depending on the quality of the material.

Oof, actually the load is secured because the rolls are staying put, looks more like some error in palletizing at the shipper. Also the trucker wouldn't feel this because it doesnt suddenly change the weight, so awful.
10
u/So_HauserAspen 23h ago
I wouldn't be surprised if the forklift operator broke the banding when loading the freight.
4
u/Low-Antelope-7264 21h ago
These get loaded with cranes.
7
u/tipareth1978 20h ago
Or massive forklifts, there's a terminal where I work where they use high cap forklifts for these
2
u/NlghtmanCometh 19h ago
Yes they are called a “Lull”. Among the most common vehicles in outside construction and definitely used for loads like this, where it doesn’t need to be picked very high.
9
u/DetroitLionsEh 22h ago
Yeah there should be 3 or 4 bands on the coil to stop this from happening.
It looks like they just have the outside band

Yeah. The load is secure. It's the freight that wasn't properly banded.

I used to work at a press factory, and thank god these weren’t hot-rolled 304 or something. Guessing aluminum?
5
u/BoxMundane6606 23h ago
What would happen if they were?
8
u/Ralonne 22h ago
It depends on which strap snapped, and the thickness of the steel, and how tightly they were banded, and if the truck’s banding was strong enough to keep a clockspringing coil from uncoiling, but probably a larger mess along the X axis, instead of a string of mess along the Y axis.
Much more dangerous for surrounding cars than aluminum, especially if the truck banding didn’t hold and it rolled off. Those things are heavy.

Why is he trying to get over at the end? He's already got the left lane blocked off from the metal. Is he trying to block the whole road?

u/AreallysuperdarkELF 23h ago
Takes a real asshole to record that instead of trying to tell the driver.

Nah, CDL driver should be instantly fired. Driver should be checking mirrors constantly and should have noticed it immediately. This and not securing his load that could have killed someone. 100 percent on the driver.

u/AreallysuperdarkELF 22h ago
That's not the point at all. Every second they continue to drive it creates more of a hazard for everyone on the road. Someone should get him to stop immediately.

I've always been leery of rolls of steel being transported ever since I read an article in the newspaper about 50 years ago about a tragic accident when an entire roll of steel fell off a truck and popped open and the end sliced through the car behind it killing the driver and passenger. Whenever I see this on the road I either give plenty or distance or pass it quickly and get way far ahead.

I wanted to see it hit the end of the roll. Those are the type they use for large steel piping. Do not want to imagine how the cleanup will be.
