Just making sure the barrels are empty
A flawless inspection method with absolutely no foreseeable drawbacks.

So he’s technically dead. Just doesn’t know it yet.

You may not be too far off.
The barrel shot up straight into his jaw/head with enough force to lift him up and knock him back. As he falls back down his head slams into the barrel literally bouncing off of it.
There's gotta be some serious neck/jaw/head injuries in there.

You see what happens Larry? You see what happens when you light a canister of gas?!

Someone who didn't play enough first-person shooters in the early 2000s. Don't they know that most barrels are just an explosion waiting to happen?
33
u/Random_Guy_47 1d ago
Nah. These barrels weren't red.
Everybody knows non red barrels are perfectly safe.
3
u/Deafcat22 1d ago
Explosive barrels in doom are not red
5
u/Joey_Kakbek 1d ago
That was before regulations were in place.
4
u/Deafcat22 22h ago
Come to think of it, wolf 3d, quake, Deus ex still non red barrels though occasionally with red labels. I think regulations kicked in around Source engine, which standardized the red barrel safety standard in Half Life 2, possibly due to problematic industrial and health+safety pressures related to the Combine.
Just another example of how safety culture lags behind until a serious incident like alien invasion finally results in meaningful change for the average shooters health.

Why do people do this?

u/ES_Legman 1d ago
Because they are so unfathomably stupid that the only reason they survived until now is pure luck

So I know some people who did this with gas tanks....
They genuinely don't think about it. When I asked what do they do if it explodes they say it won't happen.
Now, I will give them a bit of credit: a gas tank is build such that even if you light up a gas leak, it can't explode. So you will only see flame of you fought it early, and of you caught it late, it's usually smelly (because of the added mercaptan) so you know not to fuck with it. Still, you shouldn't do it, because there still a small chance of failure and you can just use soap to test it without the risk.
What I imagine happened in this video, is that the two idiots just learnt about this trick from someone who did it on gas tanks, and then applied it in a context where there are no safety checks.
It's also possible there gasoline, or some other fuel that normally would only catch on fire, unless it gets mixed with air, in which case it can explode. So they probably learnt the trick, tried it on a small bit, saw that it doesn't explode, and they just tried it again and again, until this video happend
They have permanent gear damage now, if not a lot worse.

Red shirt on the right who gets knocked down actually died later. This was in my country. It wasn’t immediate…he walked on with his friend from the explosion, but right away and from then on he only ever heard a distant ringing, nothing else. At the clinic they brought themselves to, the doctor said red shirt looked fine initially, apart from the few scrapes he received when he fell. The CT scan revealed a different picture. The blast wave had produced a lot of problems internally. As the wave hit him, it imploded micro-bubbles inside his brain that, in turn, caused fluid to build up in the skull until he eventually had a kind of embolism I guess you’d call it. He made it only a few hours from the time of the explosion you see in the video here.
What happened to the other guy, though? No one really knows. Some people think it might have affected him differently. Someone I met even said they think there might be more to it than that. Maybe something with the nature of the trauma…he said he saw him out in the lake, just in the middle of it for hours, almost not even moving, just staring straight ahead like he was the only person in the world.
It’s possible that’s not how it happened, though. They say a lot of things where I’m from.

Got a kid in my neighborhood burned severely by pulling this stunt on a couple of barrels in a nearby quarry.
They had remnants of solvents in that that dispersed on the kid with the explosion, turning him into a living torch.
Scars for life over the whole face and arms.

had a friend do this in order to repurpose an EMPTY barrel that used to have oil in it.
barrel exploded, friend has now acquired a big scar across his face and lost 3 fingers

Those barrels are damn heavy even when empty. And to see it knocked down that guy in green shirt, assuming it hits his whole frontal body, jaw & face with unbelievable speed…

They are more dangerous when they are empty, the fumes mixed with air is more explosive than the fuel or whatever was in there to start with

u/Acrobatic-Lawyerr 23h ago
So weird that there is such a delay in when he lit it up and the drum rises from the ground, and then explodes.

u/HeadofR3d 19h ago
Kid I grew up with was killed when cutting open an oil drum. Sparks ignited the residual fuel and the explosion caused his brain to swell.
I hope this is a wake up call.

Cautiously using a lighter to check for explosive gas indicates these idiots are at least minimally aware that gas and fire are a dangerous mixture. But when the idiot cells greatly outnumber the rational cells in one's brain, the more realistic outcome is just not predictable. 😄

to be fair, whoever put these barrels full of flammable gas out on the curb like that (where people like these guys can come by and play with them) is equally at fault here

Guy in Indian Hill (Cincinnati) just got really burned badly using a plasma torch on a barrel. I think the news said it was an old paint barrel.

For those wondering, the last barrel checked was not empty. The signs are subtle, but if you look carefully you will see it.

Okay, after checking we know:
- The barrel was not empty
- The barrel was highly flammable
- Our way of testing barrels for flammable liquids works
- The barrel is now empty
- We're gonna need another Timmy.

And that made sense to him.....those kinds of barrels usually have residue leftover and closed it builds whatever gases waiting for proper cleaning or in this case....an idiot 🙄 hence.....

I keep thinking about this one over and over and I just can't figure it out. Why would anyone do this other than wanting it to happen. Are they suicidal? There is no way in any hell anyone can be so absolutely fucking stupid they would do this. Not to be funny but how did they survive for this long? I just don't get it.

How are they not dead? That seems like a life altering concussion at a minimum….

My dad tried doing this once except in the utility room in the basement when we thought we smelled gas fumes. My mom was telling him not to and saying “what happens if there is gas?” and he legitimately did not care. “If there is we’ll know it.” Nothing happened, since the concentration was too low, but then he never bothered looking into a leak, since it didn’t explode apparently.
Fast forward to the next day and I get home from work early with no one else in the house and I could smell the gas thick in the air the moment I opened the door upstairs. Fricken stupid stuff man.
