Bingo. That's the nervous thumbs up that you do as an immediate reaction to calm yourself down when you know your shit just got fucked up.

My thoughts exactly. One time I faceplanted super hard in a crowded bar and I started yelling "I'M OK!" before I had assessed the damage. I was just embarrassed, and hurt, but not as bad as this guy.

God the impact is one thing, that's his neck fucked up for sure, but the part I really worry about is the crush. I actually hope it full-on hit his helmet because that could maybe survive it. Everything else about him is much more... squishy.

It's called a fencing response. When you die, your arm sticks up, like in Rick or Morti.Â
Here he only died a little bit, so only his thumbs stuck up.Â

He prevented his ATV from getting damaged. I get that.
6
u/I_am_the_Vanguard 1d ago
Might have prevented himself getting damaged if he just rode his atv out of the way. But I get it, not much time to think when itâs coming straight for you

u/x_Leigh_x 2d ago
If the ATV behind him wasnât there, heâd be playing Katamari Damacy.
29
u/CloudBurn2008 2d ago
Do I want to know what katamari damacy is?
Oh it's a game, this wasn't nearly as dark as I thought it would be
18
u/matycauthon 2d ago
it's a game where you roll everything alive or not into an astronomically sized ball. is that not dark enough for you?
4
u/AspiringTS 2d ago
Katamari Damacy is definitely Fridge Horror below all the colorful levels and cheerful upbeat music.
2
u/SofterBones 2d ago
I've never played it but I know the soundtrack is dope as hell, every song is a banger

I think it's likely he was just getting off his own vehicle and not getting out of the way in time. I don't think he was throwing his hands up to try and stop it. I think it was a defense mechanism.

19
u/ZoomTown 2d ago
Yeah, I think the fish-eye style to the camera is clouding the fact that the ATV was sort of rolling in a curve, I dont the guy realized it was going to change direction and come right at him.
6
u/Aeseld 1d ago
Except his position and stance says he was moving forward into it while bracing for the impact. Arms didn't fly up, they were held forward to absorb impact, elbows bent to take the shock.Â
He had already gotten off his own vehicle, for long enough to step into the oncoming atv. He definitely had time to step out of the way, and chose to step forward instead.
11
u/CrazyBag 2d ago
He could've left the other side and hidden behind his ATV as a defensive reaction. It really looks like he gets out of his ATV right before it hits it to protect it thinking it won't be that heavy since it's almost stopped. Watch it again.
2
u/yeppbrep 2d ago
not everyone has perfect reactions buddy, but clearly you would NEVER make a mistake like this in a panic situation . . .
9
u/BigBoyoBonito 2d ago
I understand that people don't often make perfect decisions when reacting in a panic, but I don't think most people would move TOWARDS the danger when supposedly trying to protect themselves
3
u/kaerfkeerg 1d ago
Maybe but he could go to the other side. Panic or not, who would try to leave towards the atv

Similar thing happened when me, my brother and some other guys were pulling into our remote camping spot after spending the day wheeling our jeeps.
About 100 yards away from us were a couple very steep short, dirt runs that led up to the top of the hill (maybe 50 yards - not very tall but very steep) and then had a turn around up top so you could come back down.
A couple guys on 4 wheelers pull up to
It and start egging each other on. One guy attempts it and it catches our attention because he was going pretty fast. He gave up about half way up had a hairy experience driving hos 4 wheel backwards back down to the flat area but did a great job keeping his front wheels facing straight ahead to keep his front and back tires in a straight line .
His buddy takes the challenge and pegged the throttle making it up almost to the top before his wheeler started spinning tires and it started to roll backwards. He panicked, turning his wheels and the wheeler starts a violent tumble down the hill. The driver jumped clear and slid down the hill on his butt.
Meanwhile the 4 wheeler is now doing somersaults, ass over front over and over and the guy the made the earlier attempt decided heâs going f to try to stop step in front of it and stop it somehow.
It crashed into his upper torso and head with incredible force knocking him back about 25 feet sending him head over heels backwards.
We immediately rushed in because his buddies just froze. When we got to him the entire left side of his skull was visible; it had basically de-skinned his scalp, his ear and the skin lining that side of his face and jaw where it had ripped away. It was all clumped up dangling down to his shoulder in a pile but still intact but not in place. His shoulder and clavicle was broken and his arm had a compound fracture.
We told his buddies to call an ambulance BUT THEY REFUSED saying they would take him to a hospital in their truck - which was about 1 miles further down the trail at the parking lot trailhead.
We got his arm and shoulder stabilized and and wrapped his head and face as best we could and watched them load the poor guy on the back of one of the wheeler and go screaming down the trail jostling him all over the place.
It was absolutely crazy. We had several similar incidents over the years where we were bystanders but ended up rendering aid because their buddies froze up.
2
u/sheikahstealth 1d ago
Good on you guys. Heroes, really. Because without you guys there, you never know how people who freeze will react as they are already in panic mode.

But then again, he might know he has excellent health insurance and Aflac with zero coverage for his atv.

saw a video few years back where a woman jumped from the 30th or higher floor in china and a man infront of that building really tried to catch her from down there.
both died as i remember correctly.
how can ppl not think that thru. i mean even if the woman was 20kg. even if the quad was 10kg and half as big.
this is half a ton rolling down with a good amount of speed and forceđ
what do you expect to happen?

Watched someone lose the ability to use his legs trying something even less dumb than this. It was on a downhill road and the guy riding it was already sent to fucking space. Don't ever drive a four wheeler on the road with those knobby tires, only like 3"² of surface in contact with the road.
