9
u/Reditor18472 8d ago
With my iphone7 I didn’t have a ridiculous number of fancy camera features so usually tapping on where I wanted the camera to focus once was enough. But when I was still having issues, I would tap and hold on the area out to the camera to focus and that would turn off auto focus temporarily. It sort of works for my iPhone 16.

So many comments going on about the quality of the video. This is a real video, caught in real time in response to something wild happening. Nothing wrong with a camera man, the problem is too many people are getting used to created content that they think is real life. We complain about spontaneous actual footage of interesting things because we're comparing them to people who set up scenarios with a script, lighting, sound, makeup and any number of retakes and edits.

Its 2026 with AI everywhere yet the phone is not smart enough to focus on the thing that matter. 80% chance that auto focus always focused on the wrong thing at first, and manual tap is required but it also has 80% chance to fail.
143
u/smthomaspatel 8d ago
Manual tap with a chain link or some kind of net in the foreground is a fools errand.

They needed to push the lens closer to the whole in the fens or use tap to focus it something. I get in the moment you're paying more attention to the homicidal driver going the wrong way
17
u/EAGLeyes09 8d ago
That still doesn’t work with iphone. It’ll just switch to Macro. You’ll need to get the physical camera lenses inside the little diamond gaps to completely miss the fence. I hate iphone camera in that regard.
6
u/zmileshigh 8d ago
What? The camera and sensors on an iPhone are small enough that they could fit entirely in one of the holes in the chain link. That’s what the camera person needed to do here
6
u/EAGLeyes09 8d ago
Yes, that’s what I’m saying as well.
Unfortunately that’s not going to happen in a fast, fluid situation like this. Camera man probably tried tapping the screen first to focus.
iphone doesn’t make it easy to tap on a certain object in motion and have the focus shift to it. I miss my Android phone in that regard.

u/Kharenis 8d ago
You realise you're supposed to be looking ahead right? And not just at the road immediately in front of your car?
16
u/pickledpeterpiper 8d ago
This seems to be coming up on Reddit frequently lately, right? There's a car directly where you're planning on being in five seconds, you'd think you'd move over to the other side of the freeway...
Same deal with cars that have just come to a stop...someone is going to hit them at full speed....It'll be the collision itself that alerts the other driver that there was a car directly in their line of sight and I can't imagine how that's a thing.
It begs the question as to just how many of us are completely checked the fuck out while driving...I feel like my eyes are always up ahead, on the horizon and it'd be hard to miss, but apparently its more like a beacon to some people.
2
u/LessRespects 8d ago
Redditors don’t drive. You’d know this if you read dashcam or roadrage subs comments. Never give any integrity to comments on car accident videos, just read it for a laugh lol
32
u/1200____1200 8d ago
The reverser also drifts into their lane. While they look like they weren't paying attention, they didn't have a lot of time to process what they were seeing and plot an avoidance route
37
27
u/AtmosphereMiddle1682 8d ago
You're acting like they're required to plan the invasion of Stalingrad. Slow down, and move right. They either didn't see them at all since they weren't paying attention, or they panicked and froze.
In my view if you do either, you shouldn't hold a license.

I feel like the car they collided with could have done a little bit more to avoid the collision. Not trying to take blame off the person who is very obviously at fault here but like, the white car made zero attempt to avoid this.
146
u/Opening-Ant3477 8d ago
When a car is going backwards on the highway like that it is almost impossible to correctly judge the distance. Most of the time you don't even notice that they are going backwards until it is too late.
89
u/N0rthWind 8d ago
This. I don't think most people are as ready as they claim for the car in front of them to DECREASE distance while still being the right-way-forward. It would definitely take you a few moments to even realize what's going on.

u/Technical_Stand9939 8d ago
100%- how many times have you narrowly avoided hitting a car that was legit stopped due to traffic. Never had that accident myself, but it feels like once per year i have to slam the breaks to avoid that happening (likely a lot less, but not that rare of a thing).
If any of those near misses were going backwards even slightly, I am not stopping in time.
→ More replies (2)9
u/liccman 8d ago

7
u/DazB1ane 8d ago
Exactly what happened to me last year. There was a building fire on the side of the road and people stopped to rubberneck. I managed to brake in time because I had plenty of space, but the car behind me didn’t. Found out while making sure everyone was okay that they were on their way to a funeral. Felt a little bad for them
7
u/quanate 8d ago
I have (somehow) known two different people who this has happened to, running into someone reversing on the freeway. Going 60+ mph on a wide open freeway, you just aren't consciously looking for someone who is stopped or reversing because we can't be prepared for every single individual thing that can go wrong. Both have life long injuries.
24
u/Kimpak 8d ago
At the worst it would have looked like the reversing car was stopped. I don't know about you but that would trip all sorts of red flags for me when I'm driving and would have slowed down and kept my eyes open to avoid.
→ More replies (13)13
u/jd1323 8d ago

oh yeah the difference between a car that looks stopped and is moving backwards at like 5mph huge difference
bruh if I see some shit wrong on the freeway I am braking immediately and moving to the furthest lane I can
2
u/Kharenis 8d ago
Right? Them moving backwards at 10mph is virtually the same perspective-wise as you going an extra 10mph with them being stationary. Either way it should be abundantly obvious that there is a significant speed difference between you and them and you should slow the fuck down.

Did you notice the backwards going car even changed lanes? How the fuck should the white car anticipate this? Did you ever drive a highway in non-US, were each lane isn't 3m wide?
When breaking a car at those speeds you easily have 150 meters distance to come to a full halt. Or did you expect him to change 2 lanes at once and risk even more lives of others.
