DUI? Suicide attempt? Why would you possibly do this. I don’t even see a missed exit. Just insane.

1.3k

u/hurtener 8d ago

She missed the exit and was going backwards to get there again... (apparently, confirmed by the news as this happened here in Argentina)

186

u/RadangPattaya 8d ago

This is how my friend's accident went. Older guy with TWO KIDS IN THE BACK was driving backwards into an on-ramp.

My friend swerved toward the concrete edge to try and avoid the guy but there wasn't time to react nor enough space.

Car's frame completely buckled after the hit (he was going ~80kph) but he got out with no injuries. The kids in the back of the other car were also, thankfully fine.

Old guy said he missed his exit and didn't want to wait 15 mins for the next one, so he risked his and the kids' in the back lives and extended his trip and drive by infinity, as his car was totalled as well.

He'll also have to pay ~5k euro AFTER insurance pays their share.

All because he didn't want to spend an extra 15 mins.

I seriously wonder wtf is (or isn’t) going on in a persons brain to pull moves like that. No sense of self preservation, no sense of protection over two vulnerable children, no common sense to think pulling a maneuver like that on a busy highway is a bad idea.

55

u/Ok-Count3186 8d ago

Probably something like "ME ME ME IM IMPORTANT ONLY ME NO ONE ELSE EVERYONE ELSE IS BELOW ME I AM THE MOST IMPORTANT" something like that

I seriously wonder wtf is (or isn’t) going on in a persons brain to pull moves like that.

Very little, obviously.

8

u/GreenStardust001 8d ago

They're not thinking they're reacting - "OMG I MISSED THE EXIT I HAVE TO FIX IT"... like when a little kid spills a little of a full cup of water and then just dumps the whole thing out. It's a "correction" ...

u/Ornery-Customer8521 8d ago

He should go to prison as well frankly

11

u/RadangPattaya 8d ago

That and have his license revoked. No sane person would drive in reverse on a highway, regardless of his/her circumstances.

But unfortunately he will likely just receive penalty points on his license, perhaps a short-term ban as well. Very low probability of jail..

A bad driver never misses their exit 💀

90

u/Albert_Caboose 8d ago

As evidenced here. She made it, but that asshole behind her decided to get in the way

16

Probably exited life in this case.

Thank God. For once, not Brasil!

→ More replies (1)

9

u/ShitLordOfTheRings 8d ago

But why in the fast lane? Wouldn't the exit be from the slow lane? (Not that this would make it safe, but still.)

2

u/Plain_Bread 7d ago

Maybe there was another car driving in reverse that they wanted to overtake. Or are you supposed to overtake on the other side in that case? Nobody ever explains the rules for reversing on the highway to you.

u/Current-Roll6332 8d ago

Where the fuck was the turnoff? In Brazil?

3

u/AcidaliaPlanitia 8d ago

Goddamn, I saw this once in the Boston area, but as insane as that was it was only by like 15-20 feet. There wasn't even an exit in sight here.

Either way, they're an idiot.

14

u/Intertubes_Unclogger 8d ago

Many years ago, while I was hitchhiking through France, a former Lebanese rally driver did the same because he drove by the rest stop we had asked him to stop at.

The guy had a quite the, uh, dynamic driving style in general. I hardly dared to look through the windshield. Very friendly and helpful, though.

12

u/FesteringNeonDistrac 8d ago

Yeah I was in an Uber in Cairo that backed up to get to an exit. Inshallah.

10

u/iiiinthecomputer 8d ago

Yeah travel driving experiences can really be something.

Doing 180km/h down a completely empty highway in Egypt at 3am, rigid with terror and praying the driver doesn't hiccup...

12

u/RockosModernBasiIisk 8d ago

He was heading toward the fast lane too.

Lifetime ban of driving. What was he thinking?? And in the left (fast) lane of all the lanes?!???

188

u/Skoodge42 8d ago

and jail time.

Like 15 years for putting so many lives at risk. If the other driver died, they should never see the sun again unless it's behind bars.

6

u/Zem_42 8d ago

Lol… reversing in the left lane is stupid and dangerous. Reversing in the left lane is extreme stupidity and danger. We cannot just put all idiots in the same bucket, we gotta separate them

4

You put "left" twice

My iPhone 17 is incapable of focusing beyond chain link fences, even with aggressive taps

55

u/Reditor18472 8d ago

Autofocus makes me feel crazy, and the camera rarely focuses where I want it to

23

u/astralchanterelle 8d ago

I've had iPhones for 10 years now and I still cant figure out the focus

9

u/Reditor18472 8d ago

With my iphone7 I didn’t have a ridiculous number of fancy camera features so usually tapping on where I wanted the camera to focus once was enough. But when I was still having issues, I would tap and hold on the area out to the camera to focus and that would turn off auto focus temporarily. It sort of works for my iPhone 16.

2

u/Remarkable_Gain6430 8d ago

7

u/bolanrox 8d ago

makes me so happy i grew up shooting manual focus. My Nikomat had a built in light meter so i could set the apature / shutter speed correctly with no guess work. and that was fancy shit,

3

u/Reditor18472 8d ago

Reddit gets mad about any video that slightly changes angle when an accident happens while somehow, at the same time, also being mad about how people keep filming as something horrible happens.

307

u/PlanktonInternal5948 8d ago

You could’ve just ended it at ‘reddit gets mad about any video’

64

u/Mountain_Band_2732 8d ago

You're right. Every video is either staged or filled with the most incompetent/reprehensible human beings.

Yeah but I do think each site has its own brand of insufferability. Reddit has the snarky pedantic market cornered plus a love of copypastas.

6

u/floralfemmeforest 8d ago

Generally yes, but I've found that comment sections on Tiktok of all places tend to be more positive, maybe because the algorithm is so focused that people really only see what they want.

On Reddit everyone is determined to be miserable and trying to sound smart about it, on Instagram most people are also mean and miserable but are less smart. I can't speak to any other medium at this moment lol.

What pisses me off is when they judge someone for not picking the 100% optimal thing to do in an insane unexpected situation, as if everybody totally does the perfect thing in stressful situations.

391

u/Bussin1648 8d ago

So many comments going on about the quality of the video. This is a real video, caught in real time in response to something wild happening. Nothing wrong with a camera man, the problem is too many people are getting used to created content that they think is real life. We complain about spontaneous actual footage of interesting things because we're comparing them to people who set up scenarios with a script, lighting, sound, makeup and any number of retakes and edits.

133

u/Humble_Bumble_Me 8d ago

Seriously. The woman was clearly worried about what was going to happen. Capturing an accident in real time is not something you can practice.

29

u/Mirainai 8d ago

its not like they had much time to setup did they?

314

u/TheAsianSam 8d ago

The cameraman tried their best.

Its 2026 with AI everywhere yet the phone is not smart enough to focus on the thing that matter. 80% chance that auto focus always focused on the wrong thing at first, and manual tap is required but it also has 80% chance to fail.

143

u/smthomaspatel 8d ago

Manual tap with a chain link or some kind of net in the foreground is a fools errand.

71

u/HTPC4Life 8d ago

Yes, manual tap so it focuses RIGHT on the fence. Been there, done that.

46

u/xenobit_pendragon 8d ago

My favorite is when I’m trying to take a picture of something and one of my kids wanders by in the background and my phone decides that obviously the human is the subject. No amount of tapping on the actual thing matters at all.

Phone is like YOU WILL TAKE A PHOTO OF THE HUMAN SO HELP ME GOD.

17

u/FesteringLion 8d ago

Your phone understands it's role as part of a global surveillance network.

4

u/unicodemonkey 8d ago

My Sony camera has a setting to recognize and focus either people's faces or animals (or just do regular auto/manual focus, that's still an option, of course), and I've ruined quite a number of shots by forgetting to switch off the cat mode.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Bagafeet 8d ago

They needed to push the lens closer to the whole in the fens or use tap to focus it something. I get in the moment you're paying more attention to the homicidal driver going the wrong way

17

u/EAGLeyes09 8d ago

That still doesn’t work with iphone. It’ll just switch to Macro. You’ll need to get the physical camera lenses inside the little diamond gaps to completely miss the fence. I hate iphone camera in that regard.

6

u/zmileshigh 8d ago

What? The camera and sensors on an iPhone are small enough that they could fit entirely in one of the holes in the chain link. That’s what the camera person needed to do here

6

u/EAGLeyes09 8d ago

Yes, that’s what I’m saying as well.

Unfortunately that’s not going to happen in a fast, fluid situation like this. Camera man probably tried tapping the screen first to focus.

iphone doesn’t make it easy to tap on a certain object in motion and have the focus shift to it. I miss my Android phone in that regard.

147

u/Silencer306 8d ago

Yea its like they weren’t even watching

97

u/IntergalacticPodcast 8d ago edited 8d ago

They don't even apply their brakes. The highway was wide open and this should have been easy to avoid (at least with the same intensity)

22

u/Electromotivation 8d ago

I feel like you don’t really know how fast something comes up on you at highway speed. They probably had a second to a second and half to correct

53

u/Rainebowraine123 8d ago

The person driving the correct way could've seen them for well over 10 seconds. It's not like this guy just teleported onto the highway. You should always be looking well ahead of where you are when driving so nothing like this surprises you.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/IntergalacticPodcast 8d ago

6

16

u/pickledpeterpiper 8d ago

This seems to be coming up on Reddit frequently lately, right? There's a car directly where you're planning on being in five seconds, you'd think you'd move over to the other side of the freeway...

Same deal with cars that have just come to a stop...someone is going to hit them at full speed....It'll be the collision itself that alerts the other driver that there was a car directly in their line of sight and I can't imagine how that's a thing.

It begs the question as to just how many of us are completely checked the fuck out while driving...I feel like my eyes are always up ahead, on the horizon and it'd be hard to miss, but apparently its more like a beacon to some people.

2

u/LessRespects 8d ago

Redditors don’t drive. You’d know this if you read dashcam or roadrage subs comments. Never give any integrity to comments on car accident videos, just read it for a laugh lol

32

u/1200____1200 8d ago

The reverser also drifts into their lane. While they look like they weren't paying attention, they didn't have a lot of time to process what they were seeing and plot an avoidance route

37

u/keraut 8d ago

They must really struggle when they suddenly hit gridlock too and collide into the back of cars quickly stopped on the road. They shouldn’t be driving.

27

u/AtmosphereMiddle1682 8d ago

You're acting like they're required to plan the invasion of Stalingrad. Slow down, and move right. They either didn't see them at all since they weren't paying attention, or they panicked and froze.

In my view if you do either, you shouldn't hold a license.

10

u/sora_mui 8d ago

If you see something weird going on, you slow down to assess whether your path is safe or not. How hard is it to understand?

T E N E T

151

u/Pistolfist 8d ago

I feel like the car they collided with could have done a little bit more to avoid the collision. Not trying to take blame off the person who is very obviously at fault here but like, the white car made zero attempt to avoid this.

146

u/Opening-Ant3477 8d ago

When a car is going backwards on the highway like that it is almost impossible to correctly judge the distance. Most of the time you don't even notice that they are going backwards until it is too late.

89

u/N0rthWind 8d ago

This. I don't think most people are as ready as they claim for the car in front of them to DECREASE distance while still being the right-way-forward. It would definitely take you a few moments to even realize what's going on.

19

u/Technical_Stand9939 8d ago

100%- how many times have you narrowly avoided hitting a car that was legit stopped due to traffic. Never had that accident myself, but it feels like once per year i have to slam the breaks to avoid that happening (likely a lot less, but not that rare of a thing).

If any of those near misses were going backwards even slightly, I am not stopping in time.

9

u/liccman 8d ago

I’ve personally narrowly avoided hitting a car like that only to be hit by the guy behind me lol

7

u/DazB1ane 8d ago

Exactly what happened to me last year. There was a building fire on the side of the road and people stopped to rubberneck. I managed to brake in time because I had plenty of space, but the car behind me didn’t. Found out while making sure everyone was okay that they were on their way to a funeral. Felt a little bad for them

u/quanate 8d ago

I have (somehow) known two different people who this has happened to, running into someone reversing on the freeway. Going 60+ mph on a wide open freeway, you just aren't consciously looking for someone who is stopped or reversing because we can't be prepared for every single individual thing that can go wrong. Both have life long injuries.

24

u/Kimpak 8d ago

At the worst it would have looked like the reversing car was stopped. I don't know about you but that would trip all sorts of red flags for me when I'm driving and would have slowed down and kept my eyes open to avoid.

Yes "looks stopped" but is actually accelerating backwards making it very hard to accurately judge the distance and safely stop.

oh yeah the difference between a car that looks stopped and is moving backwards at like 5mph huge difference

bruh if I see some shit wrong on the freeway I am braking immediately and moving to the furthest lane I can

u/Kharenis 8d ago

Right? Them moving backwards at 10mph is virtually the same perspective-wise as you going an extra 10mph with them being stationary. Either way it should be abundantly obvious that there is a significant speed difference between you and them and you should slow the fuck down.

I'm losing my mind at the Monday Morning Quarterbacks shitting on the person who if we are being generous would have had 3 seconds max to react.

Bullshit. Slow down if unsure.

Did you notice the backwards going car even changed lanes? How the fuck should the white car anticipate this? Did you ever drive a highway in non-US, were each lane isn't 3m wide?

When breaking a car at those speeds you easily have 150 meters distance to come to a full halt. Or did you expect him to change 2 lanes at once and risk even more lives of others.

Literally never driven on a US road in my life, weird assumption to make that everyone on the internet is an American.

The white car didn't even panic swerve at the last minute, they absolutely were not paying attention.

Yes it’s blurry, but it shows the entire incident. I am neutral on cameraman’s abilities.

Also what was the driver even trying to do???

u/Star_Petal_Arts 8d ago

Missed the exit, so went in reverse to go back one exit.

Redditors have found footage brain rot, expecting the same production values from actual found footage.

Cameraman. Reversing driver. Collision driver. WHAT WERE THEY ALL LOOKING AT!

u/milkysway1 8d ago

Good drivers sometimes miss their exit. Bad drivers never do.

2

u/Snake_ly 8d ago

But they missed the exit, what are they supposed to do, go the extra 2-7min?

2

u/cronodl 8d ago

I've seen before backing up near highway exits too much. People don't realize how selfish and dangerous it is. Ugh.

2

u/DIJames6 8d ago

This person should never even be allowed to be a passenger in a car again..

2

u/jerrythecactus 8d ago

a bad driver NEVER misses their exit.

2

u/h-boson 8d ago

The oncoming driver had 3 business days to notice

2

u/SantaBarbaraMint 8d ago

That is called attempted murder

Argentina shirts and an Argentina flag? My guess is that the car wanted to reverse and get a picture of the Argentina display on the over-pass. And that’s probably why they’re filming
