Isn't this the guy who brought Elon Musk onto his stage and then called his audience poor?

3.2k

u/RaymondBeaumont Feb 17 '26

yeah, this is the "performative bullshit" people are talking about.

u/ADhomin_em Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

Dave's a rich bitch. He helped get us here by cashing in on the culture war bullshit. If he wants to start helping, it's gonna take a lot more than a photo op before a show. It's a start I guess

u/ArtisianWaffle Feb 17 '26

Was he one of the comedians who went to Saudi Arabia or wherever that controversial comedy meeting was?

232

u/Akronica Feb 17 '26

402

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '26

He's against governments murdering citizens (except when he's handed enough money to compromise and ignore it).

184

u/kosanovskiy Feb 17 '26

1.5m usd sure convinces him quick. Even though he already has ten fold of that. Either way after that, hum and Burr are dead for me. This seems like an obvious photo op.

107

u/wrnrg Feb 17 '26

Yeah, Burr really disappointed me. He can fuck off with any commentary he has now.

You can't talk all the shit you talk about the people you talk about and then go take blood money from the same type of people you constantly berate.

21

u/drmojo90210 Feb 17 '26

The thing that pisses me off the most about Burr, Chappelle, and many of the other guys who did the Saudi tour wasn't the fact that they sold out. It's the fact that they tried to spin their participation as some kind of important cultural event that was going to lead to social progress in Saudi Arabia. What a bunch of horseshit. I would honestly respect them more if they just admitted "Yeah, it's a pretty repressive country but they paid me a fuckton of money to perform there, so whatever." If you're gonna sell out, at least be honest about it.

u/zuffio Feb 17 '26

Great comment. Using commentary and disappointing are 2 perfect words when discussing bill burr. A lot of comedy is blended in with the uncomfortable truth and he was the best at it. But he can’t lecture us anymore. And the disappointment isn’t that he went to Saudi Arabia. The disappointment is the bullshit he tried to sell us why he went. Pete Davidson went. His father was killed on 9/11. He said he went for the crazy money offered. I appreciate that. That’s all bill had to say. But instead,he has no credibility left and he has joined the ranks of the elite phonies.

32

u/drmojo90210 Feb 17 '26

Yeah, at least Pete Davdison was honest enough to admit he just did it for the money. Burr, Chappelle, and a few of the other guys tried to spin it by pretending that the festival was some kind of important cultural event that was going to help promote social progress in Saudi Arabia or some horseshit. I respect an honest sellout more than a bad liar.

In his defense, he himself said he would totally sellout. Doesn't absolve him but he did admit to it.

Bill Burr comes to mind, too.

Like, they try to cast it off as going into the lion's den, but they clearly toned down their comedy and certainly did not poke the beast.

and he defended it vehemently and basically said "well yea i went to the UAE and made shittons of money but israel is comitting a genocide and nobody cares!!" literally some of the worst whataboutism ive ever heard, im glad he spoke out on palestine but he literally used it to shield himself from saudi arabia backlash lmfao

13

u/Knatem Feb 17 '26

I think he was pointing out the hypocrisy, rather than the whataboutism. Additionally punishing individuals of the nation because their leaders are terrible shouldn’t be a thing. I don’t think we need to venerate celebrities, they are human and they make mistakes. No one will fit the mold that many people are projecting onto these other people, themselves included.

4

u/zherok Feb 17 '26

The Riyadh Comedy Festival was put on by the Saudi government as an effort to bolster its image. Working the gig would mean explicitly working for the government's propaganda effort.

And it wasn't exactly a mystery as to why the gig was problematic. We know some comedians rejected it outright, and that others were extremely low key about being a part of it.

For the comedians who went, it wasn't a mistake, it was a pay day. If they're regretful after the fact, it's likely to because they don't care for the consequences of people knowing they did it.

He lives in rural Ohio by choice. It is what it is.

Edit: This triggered the shit out of Ohio.

132

u/the_urban_juror Feb 17 '26

"rural Ohio" needs context. Yellow Springs is known for being a progressive area full of artists. It's a regional tourist attraction. The current mayor is black and the previous mayor was gay. It's surrounded by Trump country, but Yellow Springs does not resemble the rest of rural Ohio. It's basically a flat Asheville.

47

u/Insect1312 Feb 17 '26

Asheville mentioned!! You can tell your in a whole other world 15 min out side of downtown in any other direction.

30

u/Anal-Y-Sis Feb 17 '26

My best friend of 20 years lives in Asheville and I go see him pretty regularly (I live a couple hours away). It really is a bright blue dot in a sea of red.

Not with the traffic on I-240 these days, that barely gets you past Haywood in West AVL and to seeing signs for Bat Cave going east. Also don't get me started on the abominations that are drivers on I-26.

But yeah, 45 minutes out and hard agree lol

11

u/Apprehensive-War7483 Feb 17 '26

Hell, even "rural" needs context. It's like a 25 minute drive to downtown Dayton. Even less to Springfield.

It's not like Yellow Springs is in BFE.

He stopped the mass development of Ryan home cardboard homes STARTING at 300k from being built. Chapelle sucks but this story is like 90% sensationalism without any context.

I live in a city in Ohio that has allowed 4 of these to be built In the last 10 years and there now isn’t enough room in schools or teachers for the amount of kids. There’s zero planning and it’s all cash grabs for people like Bernie Moreno to profit on.

6

u/Sea-Pomelo1210 Feb 17 '26

I live in Ohio. Chapelle was 100% right. That plan was not going to help anyone looking for lower cost housing. It was going to put millions in to the pocket of rich people though.

He made numerous choices. Encouraging his community to give Trump a chance was a choice. Inviting Elon on stage to mock "the poors" was a choice. His last special, he chose to defend capitalism. The idea of "buying" his town, was a choice as well. Preventing affordable housing in his town, another choice of Daves. Employing "whataboutism" to justify performing in Saudi Arabia was yet another choice. This performative photo op was a choice to appeal to those beginning to notice the cracks in his carefully curated persona.

Also unapologetically performed, for $1.5 million or more, in Saudi Arabia for their royal family in October 2025. The same family that had journalist Turki al-Jesser beheaded in June 2025 after 7 years in prison for calling attention to the corruption of said royal family, woman's rights, and Arab Spring.

Then doubled down on his choice and spit in the face Turki al-Jesser family and the Sudia humanitarian efforts by saying he could "Speak more freely" there.

5

u/vthemechanicv Feb 17 '26

Speak more freely, unless you're a reporter, or a woman, or you look at Mohammad "Bone Saw" wrong. I'd be loathe to pay to see him perform, but being able to heckle him, asking "If you like Saudi Arabia so much, if their country is so much better than America, why don't you move there," might be worth the price of admission.

What got me what when he talked about Charlie Kirk being murdered and was upset that he was murdered "by a nobody". That's how Dave sees anyone who isn't famous. We're all nobodies to him.

Fame seems to have this inevitable effect on people where they see themselves as better than anyone who isn't famous or rich and the more time that passes in this state the less they respect the rest of us.

Yes. And this isn't underreported.

He has been going on for two weeks about how he is coming to Minneapolis to show his support here and how he has a connection to this place because he filmed a special here. And like "prince stayed there for a reason."

And it's like dude, I have been closely part of the Minneapolis community for like 20 years at this point. I worked in live production too.

And I know comedians here and I know some who are in local government. And I definitely know lots.of organizers.

I have never once heard of him doing anything at all to support Minneapolis.

And he came here to what?

Do a couple gigs? For his own profit? It's not like he is doing benefit shows.

He didn't show up within a month of these murders happening...

He ain't out there getting tear gassed with the rest of us.

He came here to profit.

Like if he is affected by the recent events that is fair and valid and we appreciate the attention. But don't pretend like you're apart of this community. Don't say you're coming to support and you're just coming for a comedy gig.

And tbh, a lot of the people organizing in Minneapolis right now are members of the trans community.

This is an especially bad case of pandering. Really putting a bad taste in my mouth.

6

u/audiate Feb 17 '26

It’s also ironic a lot of my favorite people growing up are now turning MAGA..

Ludacris is the most recent mind blower to me. I member as a kid he made countless diss songs to Bill O Reilly cause Bill wrote a letter to Pepsi saying he was a thug and then was pulled from the Pepsi promotion for 2F2F

Now 20 years later, Ludacris a maga supporter. Which label rappers as thugs.

Hopefully it's just video of him sucking trans dick and not abuse.

Rumor seems to be he's a notorious chaser despite how hard he is on the trans community publically. Hopefully it's only his own insecurity being hung over his head and not something more nefarious.

u/Gingevere Feb 17 '26

Only the sleeping need a wake up call.

Dave's art used to be critique of the system. He was already awake and aware. Moving over to take the side of the system was a choice. Not an unconscious accident.

I get people being mad but also people are complicated. I appreciate his gesture here even if he hasn’t done everything the “right” way.

28

u/MC_LegalKC Feb 17 '26

I think the issue is that the things he supported led to this.

215

u/fuckyouidontneedone Feb 17 '26

It’s not, in the video it mentions multiple shows coming up in MN

This is an ad

71

u/Roseandcoldpizza Feb 17 '26

He filmed for Netflix last night in St Paul. Absolutely an ad for his next special. My partner attended-I did not and would not.

12

u/AthkoreLost Feb 17 '26

Oh, then this is 100% b-roll footage for that special, literally monetizing the deaths he helped bring about. I'd guess he's gonna dedicate the special to the memory of Pretti to try and further sell this "apology" to the public.

Did he visit Renee’s memorial as well?

Performative asshole.

154

u/yeahthatsnotaproblem Feb 17 '26

My thoughts, too. I'm seeing way more news about Alex's death than Renee's and that's sad. Women are always an afterthought, even though she was murdered first.

They were only a couple blocks from each other, right?

69

u/DeletedUsernameHere Feb 17 '26

It's the same reason they propped up Rosa Parks as the face of the Montgomery bus boycotts and Claudette Colvin was largely pushed aside and forgotten by history.

Renee Good was murdered in cold blood. But it can be, for right or wrong, argued she was doing something "wrong".

Alex Pretti was seen as doing good (helping a woman being victimized by ICE), while having the added bonus of forcing the Republicans into a no-win situation. Either decry the 2nd amendment or admit their agents are murderous bastards.

10

u/No-Bison-5397 Feb 17 '26

It is true that comms and optics are really important in politics, perhaps more now than ever.

The Pretti case is a way easier sell to a wide audience. Worked in essential services, involved with veterans (that Americans love), like you said the Trump administration chose to pick a 2nd Amendment fight, there were more angles of the incident, it was easy to supply a picture of him in front of the American Flag, and then Goode's partner was taunting the ICE agent who shot her...

Sometimes winning a political battle can become more important than the means used to do so, especially if part of the means is inaction.

I think the only real antidote, rather than moralising, is to lift Renée up and mention her. She lived a worthy life that enriched those around her until the fateful day when all that was stolen.

22

u/tacobellgittcard Feb 17 '26

I feel like it’s just due to Prettis death being more recent. Also his has less gray area so it’s easier to emphasize and harder for conservatives to argue against.

14

u/barelypoor Feb 17 '26

100%. The only possible defense they have is he was armed, which is inherently threatening. Which is an obvious no go zone. They’re both irredeemable and awful, but this isn’t about people who see that. The right wing people I know justified Renee with she had a car, she was driving at an ice agent. Obvious bullshit, but their spin worked. They have had a very hard time justifying the explanation that armed = inherently threatening. You drive at weak points, and Prettis is a bigger one

8

u/BadNewzBears4896 Feb 17 '26

Yep, there was a tiny sliver of gray area in Renee's death where you could interpret the agent as believing he was about to be run over. It was still an execution, the lethal shot was the third one he fired through the side window after he had already gotten away from the front of the car.

But Pretti was a straight up street execution because the agents saw a gun, something that was perfectly legal for him to have and also specifically a cause conservatives have historically made a big deal out of but immediately abandoned when it was inconvenient.

Unfortunately his death is a more politically damaging narrative so it has been focused on more.

Maybe an algorithm thing because it was the opposite case from my experience. I’ve seen much more about Renee than Alex.

7

u/yeahthatsnotaproblem Feb 17 '26

That's a good point. The more I think about algorithms, the more I start to think everyone's internet experience is becoming more and more different.

Chappelle knows he's on the wrong side, and now the MAGA shield is falling, so are the public supporters.

We know who you are now though, Dave. We know.

13

He’s just trying to save face before the backlash comes for him. He’s probably way too late for that.

48

There's a lot to criticize Dave Chappelle for but I don't think it's accurate to say he "kissed up to Trump", of all things.

25

u/thetower333 Feb 17 '26

this is wiiilllddd dude he legitimately called out charlie kirk for being a bad person at his last stand up netflix special and said he doesn’t stand with israel. i’ve never seen him speak about trump?
