Why this is here? It requires flexibility and good independent hand coordination, seems like a good exercise

49

u/Relative_Target6003 20h ago

It is. It just looks silly so people dump on it.

13

u/VRserialKiller 17h ago

I wonder of this is the dudes back yard? If it is, it is pretty cool and peaceful looking.

0

u/AgitatedStranger9698 13h ago

Dudes wealthy for sure.

7

u/LiftEatGrappleShoot 17h ago

I was thinking that looks like a relaxing way to start the day in a cool setting.

1

u/wiilbehung 17h ago

Especially if you can do it with eyes closed.

-14

u/Substantial_Owl2562 20h ago

Seems like performative cringe BS to me, but YMMV I guess 💁‍♂️

-7

u/AdAdministrative3056 19h ago

My guess is the type of person who does this also practices mostly silly unpractical martial arts. It definitely looks like something those no touch guys would do to make themselves seem spiritual and whatnot

3

u/petabomb 17h ago

Next you’re gonna say Yoga has no health benefits

0

u/Consistent-Stock6872 14h ago

Poor execution. There is very little water inside and he is still spilling it. Because of his low skill it looks goofy as F so it is here.

0

u/IcyGarage5767 14h ago

Yeah maybe if I was 12 I would find this cringe.

-11

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 20h ago

That's great and all, but baguazhang is supposed to be a martial art. What is the martial application of this?

It's like practising juggling or riding a unicycle - has benefits, but not for fighting.

22

u/Panik_attak 20h ago

Not everything is for combat dude. no one looks at a boxer doing jump rope and goes "how is that going to help you in a fight"

You act like fighters just spend 8 hours a day punching bags and nothing else.

-13

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 20h ago

False equivalence .

Jump rope is very good cardio, and cardio is empirically, demonstrably beneficial. Balancing cups and walking in circles isn't.

9

u/Jacket_Leather 18h ago

So coordination isn’t huh?

8

u/Panik_attak 20h ago

This improves balance and flexibility? Both are exercises, they have different benefits but benefits none the less. Your argument is weak

-14

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 20h ago

Have a bagua dude spar against a pressure-tested method like boxing or bjj and watch them get lit up like christmas.

TCMAs are weak.

6

u/Panik_attak 19h ago

Bagua is like literally 1/3rd of ONE branch of the kung fu umbrella. Its not a full martial art.

-3

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 19h ago

Yeah, it's pretty useless, thanks for being honest.

4

u/Nejrasc 17h ago

Actual martial arts also builds character. Something many lack.

1

u/BardGotHard3 16h ago

Boxing builds character, if you count traumatic brain injuries that cause personality changes

0

u/Deweymaverick 15h ago

So you’re asking what’s the point of mobility exercises for fighters?

What’s point of flexibility for fighters?

What’s the point of low impact days for fighters?

…. Just to check in, do you actually practice martial arts? Because these are basic questions.

0

u/Deweymaverick 15h ago

And nooow you’re the one rocking false equivalency, great job.

-8

u/CousinDerylHickson 20h ago edited 16h ago

But then isnt it just art if it lacks the "martial" aspect? Like ya juggling and stuff improves coordination, but that doesnt mean they do so in a way that greatly benefits martial capability. Not saying this isnt cool or impressive, but it seems more art than martial to me.

I mean it might benefit it a bit, but jump rope at least is cardio and it at least builds muscles used to better punch someone. Here though I am not sure how this helps martial capability, besides I think some small improvements to balance, cardio, and flexibility. However even these seem more geared towards improving non-combat functionality given the slow almost static nature of the movement. Not saying it isnt cool or artsy, it just seems like its not nearly the most efficient way at improving fighting skills.

4

u/RollerDude347 19h ago

No, what you're describing is just Martial. This is as much a part of martial arts as taking care of your brushes is a part of painting.

-3

u/FIMD_ 19h ago

This is more art as in like interpretive dance

-1

u/CousinDerylHickson 17h ago edited 17h ago

How? Like i dont see how these movements translate to anything martial tbh, although I guess thats subjective.

2

u/Cattle13ruiser 17h ago

Martial, like in Mars, the Roman god of war which the term derive from?

Or being part of a martial art system?

Every martial arts have exercises which have no direct combat applications. They help in a second hand way. Boxers running and jumping ropes, judokas doing tumbles, karatekas and kung fu practitioners doing kata, wrestlers doing a lot of acrobatics etc.

The one on the video require good coordination as both handals are doing different moves and also balance bowls of water, not spilling them while moving requires practice. To me it seems like a nice and simple way to develope balance, coordination and a bit ambidexterity.

1

u/CousinDerylHickson 16h ago edited 16h ago

I mean martial in the sense of relating to fighting in some way.

And ya but this is balance, coordination, and ambidexterity done at a slow pace. The other things build muscles and/or train things to be better used at a much more dynamic pace. Im sorry, but personally i dont see how slowly balancing water significantly helps develop the usages of these skills in a more fast paced dynamic manner, a pace which I think most combat takes place in.

1

u/Cattle13ruiser 15h ago

Speed comes with practicing things doing them the right way.

He may be doing it slow, but that's because he is not good enough.

Everyone who have mastered a craft (martial or not) can look coordinated, dexterous and 'natural'. In the beginning everyone looks clumsy.

Try imitating his movement, record yourself, compare - you will be even slower.

Training balance and proprioception as well as coordination is base for any sport. This obviously helps with that.

2

u/CousinDerylHickson 14h ago

Im not saying it isnt impressive, nor am i saying it has absolute 0 benefits for other things.

But personally, i dont see this as being a benefit. I am sure he is better than this than me, id probably get really wet. But i still dont think this helps in performing dynamic high speed oftentimes explosive movements used I think in almost all fights. Like its good exercise, good art I think, but to me its like saying walking will help you to better sprint. I mean sure in some ways it will, but when compared to other exercises id say its almost nil benefit.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/RollerDude347 15h ago

You have to walk before you can run. This is also a good way to practice without it being to hard on your joints.

But this also plugs some holes in kata type training. Now not only are you used to having balance, your used to tracking where your off hand is.

1

u/CousinDerylHickson 14h ago edited 11h ago

Well I think thats a good analogy. To me this is like saying if you walk around for a while it will help you sprint faster. Like sure walking helps sprinting in some aspects, but next to other exercises the benefits id imagine are next to nil if you are trying to train your sprint better.

Like not saying it isnt impressive, not saying it isnt good art, and not saying there is absolutely 0 carryover to fighting skills, but training in a wholly different slower mode of operation than the more dynamic and oftentimes explosive movements used in most fights I think doesnt help fighting as much as a lot of other exercises.

9

u/Common-Respond2367 20h ago

Lmao highly doubt you know much about fighting if you think mobility, balance, and coordination have no application in fighting

-3

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 20h ago

I propose an experiment.

Have an untrained person spend a year learning striking, takedowns and grappling against non-compliant partners.

Have another untrained person of similar stature do a year of bagua.

Watch the former utterly demolish the latter.

8

u/LaserGuyDanceSystem 20h ago

A more enlightening experiment would be to take 2 people of equal size and strength, teach them both the same style of boxing, but have one of them train balance, mobility and coordination; the other one doesn't.

Then see how they do against eachother.

Otherwise you aren't testing the value of this type of training exercise, you are just testing one martial art against one fighting sport.

1

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 19h ago

one martial art against one fighting sport

Lol, go watch Xu Xiaodong use a "fighting sport" against a "martial art".

Dude isn't particularly skilled, yet bulldozes them every time.

2

u/Common-Respond2367 20h ago

What a very dumb response to what we’re talking about here lmao

-1

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 20h ago

Show me evidence of a bagua practitioner being effective against a resistant opponent.

I'll wait.

-3

u/Samsquanch-01 20h ago

Cool let's see this guy fight a boxer. Wonder how it will go.

5

u/Common-Respond2367 20h ago

So we’re gonna just act like I called dude a world class fighter instead of calling someone out for acting as if mobility and balance training were the same as the dip shits we see “knocking people out” by playing patty cake with their back fat

-5

u/Samsquanch-01 19h ago

So boxers are dipshits knocking people out? Cause they definitely don't train for balance and eye/hand coordination, just in a way that help their trade. Instead of whatever the fuck the guy in the video is doing...

2

u/Common-Respond2367 19h ago

Lmfao boxers don’t train balance and coordination!? 😆🤣 way to out yourself bud, why are you even trying to give your input when you don’t even have experience in the things we’re talking about

5

u/Common-Respond2367 19h ago

Lmao which is why you blocked me 🤣

-4

u/Samsquanch-01 19h ago

I never said they didn't. You're reading it wrong buddy....you made reference that boxers are dipshits just knocking people out....

1

u/mess_of_limbs 16h ago

You're reading it wrong friend. They didn't say boxers are just dipshits knocking people out.

2

u/MimiagaYT 20h ago

Dont forget the "art" in martial arts. The can be intrinsic value in self reflection, discipline, or enlightenment. Not every aspect of a martial art needs to be useful in a fight.

Iaido is practiced pretty much souly as kata. No one walks around with a sword expecting to quickdraw it as a form of self defense. Doesn't mean its any less legitimate.

-1

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 20h ago

TCMAs are a joke. Show me any actual evidence of bagua being effective at self-defence or combat.

4

u/MimiagaYT 20h ago

I... I just said... did you not read where I said it doesn't have to? Are you dumb? If you're dumb its okay, I don't blame you. Its not your fault.

2

u/dingsh-lowcone 18h ago

No bro unless you are training to become an efficient killing machine, it’s not martial arts bro. there’s nothing martial arts has to offer but violence, and if your training cant beat my training in a hypothetical scenario, then you wasted your time /s

5

u/MimiagaYT 18h ago

This is why they need to introduce glocks into mma

-1

u/Fit_Appointment_4980 20h ago

Show me the evidence. Until then it's bullshido.

2

u/Panik_attak 19h ago edited 19h ago

Patrick Barry, Cung le

94

u/lucaskywalker 22h ago

I imagine it is quite hard to makes these movements without spilling the water in those cups. Seems like that would actually help his balance am mobility like he claims. Is everything we don't understand bullshido now?!

32

u/naturalharmonic 21h ago

Thank you. I don't think this guy is planning on tea-cupping anyone to death or purporting himself to be a master of Tea Kwan Do or anything. This is for mobility and flexibility and enjoying the morning weather.

4

u/Sc00tzy 17h ago

Tea Kwan Do 😂

3

u/mvanvrancken 21h ago

No he’s just a master of Gong Fu

17

u/CalicoCrony 21h ago

The teacup is a great shoulder mobility exercise when done properly. This guy is doing it properly for the most part despite how fruity he looks lol. My main critique is he should be attempting to lift the cup towards the center of his back when the cup is behind him.

3

u/Zealousideal_Bet_248 19h ago

See, you can't use it to punch someone's teeth in, so we don't like it. Uga uga

4

u/joeker7669 17h ago

Right. It’s probably a balance and spatial awareness practice thing. I think it’s pretty cool even if it isn’t.

11

u/Archibald_80 21h ago

Yeah exactly, this actually looks like a great warmup.

2

u/Moonshinin4Me 16h ago

Pretty much.

3

u/it_will 21h ago

It’s also a cultural dance in the Philippines. Not sure if this is even about fighting or whatever

1

u/lucaskywalker 18h ago

I don't think the person taking the video says it was, he said mobility. But I can see how balance and flexibility can help you fight better.

1

u/ospfpacket 20h ago

Or water bongs

1

u/tumbleytumbleweed 17h ago

He did spill all the water. Look at the ground, it’s wet as hell.

1

u/lucaskywalker 10h ago

I did not say he was doing it well, only that the exercise is legit. Do we make fun of a fat guy on a treadmill here too?

-1

u/i-like--whales 21h ago

I'm pretty sure just doing some basic yoga would be more beneficial though.

3

u/lucaskywalker 18h ago

My point is he is not claiming this is some magic martial arts technique, it's just balance and flexibility. So NOT bullshido.

1

u/i-like--whales 17h ago

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing with you. Just saying yoga would be MORE beneficial than this.

2

u/lucaskywalker 10h ago

Probably. I just don't love people making fun of this guy for exercising!

-11

u/Security-fish 21h ago edited 21h ago

Cups are mostly empty

8

u/Myriad_Apocalypse 21h ago

Coincidentally, just like your head

-7

u/Security-fish 21h ago

On must remove all thoughts to embrace true enlightenment.

Also, you seem cranky. Hope your day gets better.

3

u/Zealousideal_Bet_248 19h ago

Dude, you got a pretty good burn. Best move is to acknowledge it and move on. Can't comeback from that

1

u/Security-fish 19h ago

If I needed a comeback I'd scrape it off your mom.

2

u/Zealousideal_Bet_248 19h ago

See. That's a good one too

1

u/Security-fish 19h ago

It honestly felt like you activated a trapcard I've had waiting since middle school.

2

u/Zealousideal_Bet_248 17h ago

And now you understand. The other person wasn't cranky. They just saw a chance and took it. Like they said, light jab

2

u/Zealousideal_Bet_248 19h ago

My mom died a few months ago though lol

2

u/Myriad_Apocalypse 19h ago

It was just a light jab, no crankiness

My day is going just fine for an everage thursday in the final days here at the end of the world, but I guess it could always get better

-3

u/Security-fish 19h ago

This implies your natural state is to insult someone as a go to responds.

2

u/Myriad_Apocalypse 19h ago edited 19h ago

Yeah, right, and I'm the cranky one here, yeah?

1

u/LaserGuyDanceSystem 20h ago

So he has room for improvement

1

u/tumbleytumbleweed 17h ago

Yeah. Look at the ground. He spilled all the water.

9

u/AdventurousQuail36 21h ago

Oh. Is this posted by the ban dodger account that really, really hates u/eight_directions_ for totally insane reasons?

6

My biggest fan lol

5

u/EL-HEARTH 18h ago

What did you do to him? Lmfao

4

u/Eight_Directions_ 16h ago

I said that deep down I think he's a good person. He really took offense to that!

Honestly I can't be mad, every time he shows up my post engagement goes way up lol!

48

u/The_Waco_Kid7 22h ago

11

u/kaminobaka 21h ago

I don't feel like this belongs here. But I've said that about a lot of things I've seen on here recently.

1

u/DoctorStumppuppet 12h ago

Some people think the only important part of martial arts is striking and grappling techniques, ignoring the spiritual/mental and physical health aspects of martial arts. Bullshido is wrong and problematic in multiple ways, but it's important to be discerning as to what is and isn't bullshido

10

u/Sure_Initial8498 21h ago

Idk man, this doesn't look too bad.

4

u/MadeInTheUniverse 19h ago

I see old people in their 80's doing tai chi and looking very mobile. In the mean time i have friends in their mid 30s who have joint complaints so this isnt bullshido for me

3

u/GetFuct819 22h ago

At least he’s not charging people for the knowledge of the pole dance or whatever the hell this is (or not to my knowledge). He’s just being eccentric by himself which I’m totally fine with.

2

u/unwitting_hungarian 21h ago

Yeah, the variety of videos he's published make it clear it's not really Mc-anything, just TMA-style practice

1

u/GetFuct819 20h ago

What’s TMA? Tucking My Aardvark?

5

u/wildjabali 21h ago

Probably a great exercise for your rotator cuff. Rotator cuff injuries are no joke

1

u/epicnaenae17 16h ago

I tore mine playing hockey as a 14-15 year old. Couldn’t move my arm from the shoulder for a month due to the pain. Then when the pain went away, I didnt have the physical strength in my arm to raise my arm above shoulder height, super weird feeling to be so weak you cant move a basic body part.

2

u/My_Fish_Is_a_Cat 21h ago

This is a great way to maintain joint and nerve health. It has similar benefits to yoga. You’ll notice that many elite soldiers in Tier one units do yoga to maintain flexibility and fine motor control these days. It came to light when a few of them were seen doing contortionist levels of positioning while sniping off a simulated house roof during a competition. They do everything it takes to gain the advantage. They won of course.

I feel like a lot of people in the martial arts community seem to have the idea that if something doesn't let you hurt people, then it's useless to you. There are plenty of other reasons someone would engage in this practice

1

u/Soultampered 18h ago

is this not tai chi?

1

u/Miao_Yin8964 18h ago

It's top notch Knot martial arts

This would do exactly as its claiming. Increase mobility. No bullshido detected.

1

u/Lymetme 17h ago

This attitude is the same reason I stopped going on bullshido 20y ago. It becomes a cult of mostly fat losers who don't even train. There is no bullshido here. The apparent claim is that this is a mobility exercise. It like like a mobility exercise. What is the problem?

1

u/Dynamo_Ham 17h ago

It would help the optics a lot of the dude lost the manbun

I like the garden though

Right? If I was putting this stuff online I would be self-depreciating about it, not putting "expert" or "pro" as a subtitle
