Discussion Disability Benefits and Supports (Saskatchewan)

Hi everyone!

I’m a local lived experience mental health advocate and nerd, not necessarily in that order.

I wanted to share a free resource I’ve been working on for anyone in Saskatchewan navigating disability benefits. I’m not selling anything this is a free resource for anyone, as are all my resources. I am based in YXE, but most Sask and Fed resources apply across Sask.

Over the past while, I’ve put together a comprehensive guide covering things like the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), Canada Disability Benefit (CDB), RDSP, SK Housing Benefit, Special Support Program (meds), tax credits and other financial and related supports.

It’s designed to save people from having to dig through dozens of government websites trying to figure out what they might qualify for. Everything is organized in one place with links to official sources.
I know how overwhelming this stuff can be, so I hope it makes things a little easier for people. Please do share with anyone who may find it useful.

You can find it via the link or visit Mentalhealthyxe.com -> Resources -> Disability Benefits

Hope this helps!

Question Clyptospora Testing

Trying to get tested for Clyptospora (what's causing the diarrhea outbreak in US). Got a requisition for and Oocytes and Parasite test, but upon reading what the test includes, it sound like only Giardia and Cryptosporidium are tested for unless travel, etc. Anyone in healthcare, can you verify this? And, how would I get Cyclospora testing?

With the current outbreak in the US and the fact that lots of our food comes from US/Mexico, it's definitely possible to be exposed. I know there's been no reported outbreaks here, but if testing is not part of O&P, then it's unlikely it's being tested for at all... Hence no outbreak or cases.

Question Question on jobs in saskatchewan

My dad's a senior mechanical engineer, he's been in saskatchewan for about a month now and although he did really well at his last job (in another country) he's struggled to find a job here?

I'm not asking for job recommendations, instead I'd like to know how did all of you working residents get your first job here, did you go up to a job with your resume in person, apply online? I'd really like to know how you all got your jobs and how I can at least attempt to help my dad in his job hunt.

Question Electronic repair recommendations.

Hello! I have a motherboard that needs a component replaced, the guy I usually use is worried about heat affecting the board. Does anyone have any recommendations for shops that do very good work with replacing board components? It's an annoyingly expensive board, about $1500 to replace so I really want someone with the know-how to get it fixed.

Thank you!!

Not worried about what city, I travel a lot, saskatoon/Regina/Yorkton all work.

Son scratched a parked car in a bike accident

Reaching out to the community as a last ditch attempt to see if there is a better way to solve this besides simply being out of pocket.

Our 8 year old was carrying his waterbottle while on his bike, he lost control and left a scratch about as long as a juicebox next to the wheel well of a parked car. We left a note. They called. Quote is for $1200.

Can't get through to SGI because of the volume of calls and have not received a callback, but unsure if their package policy would cover this? They do have one.

Our home insurance deductible is 1500. So not helpful.

The other party is being very reasonable. They feel bad that this will cost so much money for us but it is a newer car and they want it fixed. Any ideas?

Update: Just wanted to provide an update in case anyone else is searching this issue down the road. I appreciate everyone's input. I hope the post does not discourage people from leaving a note in the future. Personal responsibility is pretty darn important in a functioning society.

After a lot of annoying hold music I confirmed a few things.. Home insurance (the Liability part) would cover the incident. However that would take up our one 'claim forgiveness' chance. That leaves us open to not having forgiveness on a potentially larger claim down the road..... so we have a decision to make. Not exactly sure what the right one is.

As a few commenters noted SGI is useful only in the sense that they would provide a payment plan. No deductible would apply. This would also leave us open to potential additional costs such as car rental.

Long story short, we will likely pay out of pocket. Though the liability insurance through our home insurance is tempting it feels a bit like kicking the can down the road.

Question Dog swimming spots?

Hi everyone!

Native Manitoban (Winnipeg) here! I moved to Calgary a few years ago, and every summer I make the drive back to Winnipeg.

This year I'll be bringing my Border Collie with me. She's very high energy, and road trips are hard on her, so I'm hoping to find a good spot to stop somewhere in Saskatchewan where she can swim and burn off some energy.

I'd love to find something relatively close to Highway 1, if possible, as I'd rather not make a huge detour. An off-leash area would be ideal, but I'm happy to keep her on a leash if that's what's required.

I'm thinking somewhere east of Regina or even closer to the Saskatchewan–Manitoba border would work best, since we already plan on stopping somewhere in Alberta for about 30 minutes to let her swim and burn off some energy. That said, I'm open to any recommendations along the route if they're worth the stop!

I'd also prefer somewhere with relatively clean, safe water. She has a habit of swimming with her mouth open and ends up drinking quite a bit of it, so I'd like to avoid places with algae or poor water quality if possible.

Thanks in advance and can't wait to discovery more of your beautiful province!
