Question Air Quality from Wild Fires

Is anyone else really feeling the air quality today?

I’m noticing my eyes have been watering and throat is irritated, coughing all night (even with the windows all closed).

Just curious about how others are doing?

Question Carpentry class in Peterborough

Hi everyone! I live in Peterborough and I’ve been thinking about taking a beginner carpentry class, I want to learn the basics of measuring, cutting and assembling but when I looked online the only thing I could find is Fleming’s trade program and that’s definitely not what I had in mind. Does anyone know of anything in the Peterborough area?

News CANCELLED – Parks Canada’s 8th annual Lock & Paddle returns to the Peterborough Lift Lock on Saturday

On Thursday (July 16), Parks Canada announced that the eight annual Lock & Paddle event has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

“The decision has been made out of an abundance of caution due to forecasted weather conditions and concerns about air quality, with the health and safety of participants, volunteers and staff remaining our highest priority,” reads a media release. “As this event is dependent on the availability of the Peterborough Lift Lock and operational requirements during the navigation season, Lock & Paddle will not be rescheduled this year.”

“We recognize that many paddlers and community members were looking forward to this unique event, and we appreciate your understanding. Thank you to everyone who planned to join us, as well as our event partners and volunteers, for their continued support.”

Question Is the Downtown Candy Shop Closing?

Another small business closing?

I noticed that the candy shop downtown is listed for lease. Is she closing?

I saw on Instagram that she's reduced her hours or sometimes isn't open at all and mentioned she's focusing on family . However, I haven't seen any announcement about closing or relocating.

Did I miss something, or does anyone know what's going on?

Question Hostile/Racist Incident Involving Local Realtor

I don’t like making posts like this, but I feel like it needs to be shared.

I was at the Service Ontario location in Lakefield today when a man entered and sat down. Two men of colour were sitting beside him, minding their own business and doing absolutely nothing wrong (in fact, they had just politely offered their chairs to an older couple who were standing).
Completely unprovoked, this man started making racist remarks, complaining about immigration and making references to a "fight back."

He then escalated to launching into political conspiracy theories and making threats against Canadian public figures (you can probably guess who).

Right before this started, I heard him introduce himself to someone nearby, giving his name and stating that he is an active local real estate agent. I looked him up afterward, and sure enough, he is actively registered and operating in our local community.

I want to give a massive thank you to the man wearing a black shirt (I think he works at Hyundai, tall, black hair, beard) who stood up to him and said what everyone in the room was thinking. I also want to thank the Service Ontario staff member who stepped in and kicked the man out of the building.
I want to know where to go from here.

His actions and threats were disgusting. I know blasting his name directly on social media isn't the right or legal way to go about this, but I want to make sure there is actual accountability.
What are the best official channels to report him?

I tried to make this post many times now, but it was taken down automatically by Reddit. I remember exactly what he said, but had to edit it for Reddit.

Recommendations mcwilliams moving Peterborough

Avoid McWilliams Moving Company. I hired McWilliams Moving Company to handle my move, and the experience was nothing short of a disaster. After McWilliams lost my reservation, they arranged for another moving company, Let's Get Moving, to complete the job. The problem is that McWilliams knowingly sent this crew to my home and remained responsible for ensuring that qualified, professional movers carried out the work. Instead, they sent a company that appeared completely unprepared and incapable of handling the move properly. The movers arrived approximately an hour and a half later than promised, showing up around 3:30 p.m. despite my move originally being scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. It became obvious almost immediately that they lacked experience and professionalism. They struggled simply to navigate our driveway, and one of the three movers spent much of the move on his phone instead of working. The result was extensive damage. Multiple pieces of furniture were broken, damage was caused to the home we had just sold, and flooring was damaged in our new home during unloading. These are now expenses that we are left to deal with ourselves. The situation became even worse when we arrived at our new home around midnight. The movers refused to unload our belongings until we paid the amount that had originally been quoted by McWilliams. Exhausted and effectively held hostage by the fact that all of our possessions were still on the truck, we felt we had no choice but to pay.Even after receiving payment, the job was left unfinished. Furniture was not placed in the correct rooms, and large items, including our couch and table, were simply left in the garage rather than being moved to the basement as required.McWilliams cannot distance itself from this experience simply because another company physically performed the move. They were the company we hired, they lost our reservation, and they chose to send the replacement movers to our home. As far as we are concerned, McWilliams is responsible for the actions of the crew they dispatched. To make matters worse, attempts to discuss the situation afterward have gone nowhere. We have been left with damaged property, an incomplete move, and a bill that was paid in full despite the work not being completed as promised.Based on our experience, I would strongly recommend avoiding McWilliams Moving Company. If a company loses your reservation and then sends an unqualified subcontractor to complete the job, they should stand behind the outcome. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. One of the most stressful moving experiences we have ever had. 1/5 stars.

Other Radio stations!

Post image
25 Upvotes

It seems that a weird consequence of all this smoke in the atmosphere is that Toronto radio stations are coming in clear. Even UofT's radio station at 89.5 was coming in clear in the car, listening to The Clash lol. Checked using manual dialing and was getting them all. Even a preset in my car for CBC Kingston 107.5, which usually fades out by Belleville, was very clear. So enjoy this atmospheric anomaly! I even get.Ottawa on some days when the conditions are right (Jump 106.9).

Politics Progressive Candidate, School Board Trustee

Earlier this week, KawarthaNow updated us on the current candidates running for Mayor, etc. Thank you! Included in that article was the sole candidate running for School Board Trustee, who will be acclaimed if no one else steps up prior to August 21. Might that be you? Why?

The sole candidate right now is Corey Scott. As noted in the NoMoreMPFerreri Facebook group (publicly visible):

"Just wanted to give a heads up that the local Peterborough School Trustee candidate is Corey Scott, who has been involved with Michelle Ferreri and her friends for a few years. Corey seems to be heavily influenced by MF.

Currently, Corey Scott is the only one running for the position in Peterborough. Hopefully he will have some competition."

Note1, he was also heavily involved in getting 2 motions passed at the 2023 Conservative Convention as a Peterborough Conservative Electoral District rep.

Note2, as we see with the MAGA down south strategy, filling local Boards and Municipal Councils with right wing candidates is a goal.

That may be what Peterborough school families want, but knowledge is power.

Might you be a progressive School Board Trustee candidate? Think about it. Deadline August 21.

Recommendations Specific Mechanics

Does anybody know an independent Subaru tech? I don't want to go to the dealer I just bought a 2011 Subaru WRX and would like specific advice from someone experienced with WRX's and Subarus in general. I've been going to Security Auto for years and I trust them I've also been recommended Bruiser Automotive which I might try but I would feel most comfortable with an independent shop with that experience.

Question Chess community in PTBO?

This seems to be asked periodically in this sub, but is there an active chess community in Peterborough? I'm reletavely new to the area but I am keen to join (or organise if there is sufficient interest) a chess club. It's pretty hard to find any information on it elswehere.

I'm not the best player but would like to improve with a like minded community.

Question Starlink Internet in the Bobcaygeon Area?

I'm moving to a new house in the Bobcaygeon area. The property is surrounded by big trees, but there is an opening above the house with a good view of the sky.

I'm wondering if I should go with Starlink internet or Bell wireless internet. Starlink advertises much higher speeds than Bell at a similar cost.

Hoping there is someone in this subreddit that is located in a similar location and is using Starlink internet. Does it work well for you?

Any info will be greatly appreciated!
