Finance & Investments Best housing option for a couple expecting a baby in Luxembourg?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

We are a couple living in Luxembourg and expecting our first baby. We are currently trying to decide which housing option would be the most sensible for our growing family.

The main possibilities we are considering are:

  • Buying an apartment or house on the private market
  • Staying in our current privately leased accommodation
  • Buying through SNHBM
  • Exploring Fonds du Logement or other affordable housing programmes

We would particularly like to hear from people who bought through SNHBM. Was the process worth it? How long did you wait? Were you able to choose the location and size of the property? Are the resale conditions, emphyteutic lease or other restrictions problematic in the long term?

For those who bought on the private market, do you feel the additional cost was justified by the greater freedom and long-term value?

As we are expecting a baby, stability, sufficient space, access to childcare, schools, transport and a family-friendly area are becoming increasingly important to us.

Which option would you consider the best for a young family in Luxembourg? Are there any advantages, restrictions or hidden costs that we should know about before making a decision?

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

« CUSTOM » Orange intervention fees

Hello Orange users,

Was anyone able to get intervention fees reverted? My home internet stopped working. So I raised the issue with customer support, and they initiated a video call with their team. During that, they asked to remove and re-insert LAN cable from the slot, and during that probably the slot in router was changed. Today when the technician came, he said it is my fault that slot was changed, and is now charging me 129 euros for this service.

I have already reached out to orange customer support on WhatsApp requesting to revert the fees, and they have forwarded the request to relevant department. Did this actually work for someone in the past?

News & Discussion What’s changed for the better since you arrived?

For those of you who made Lux their adopted home, what positive changes have you witnessed since you arrived?

After 10+ years, I can say:

- free transportation: might be obvious but it’s great. I remember with mild panic buying a bus ticket with my mobile and hoping my phone didn’t run out of battery the moment the inspector stepped on board and THE TRAM - or as my kids call it “the rainbow train”.

- supermarkets open on Sunday and now open until Sunday evening (!!!!!) - this is quite polarizing I know but it gives so much much flexibility when you work that Monday-Friday grind

- tacos tacos tacos : there are more tacos than ever before and they’re delicious, plus a host of new restos from other world cuisines

- an overall vibe of an international community. I notice this so much when I travel to London or Paris and basically have “TOURIST” written across my forehead as far as they are concerned

- Merl parc makeover babbbbyyyyyy: so excited for this one, the new park looks so dope and it’s so cool that they’ve made it accessible

- Christmas market seems to be getting bigger and twinklier every year and I love that

- loads and loads of amazing bands and acts, this continues to blow my mind

Really interested to hear from others if you care to share.

Ask Luxembourg Rockhal VIP Upgrade

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'll be visiting Luxembourg from a neighboring country for a concert at Rockhal later this summer. Im pretty short, so Im hoping to get a spot on the barricade if possible. I've been looking at the Upgrades, but I'm not really interested in the Higher Ground Lounge one since I'd rather be down on the floor and experience the crowd energy.

For anyone who's purchased the Premium Upgrade before, I have a couple of questions:
1. Do Premium/VIP guests usually get into the venue early before the General Admission?
2. Once you're inside, can you go straight to the standing floor/barricade, or do Premium guests stay in the lounge/hospitality area until a certain time?

I'm trying to figure out whether the upgrade actually improves my chances of getting barricade. Thanks (:

News & Discussion To the people coughing through The Odyssey at Kinepolis Kirchberg: next time, wear a mask if you’re sick

Seriously, if you’re sick and coughing throughout an entire movie, the least you can do is wear a mask.

People paid to enjoy the film, not to sit next to someone coughing nonstop in a packed cinema. You also have no idea whether the people around you are pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised, or living with someone vulnerable.

Getting sick happens, but knowingly spreading it to everyone around you is inconsiderate. Stay home if you can, or at least wear a mask. It’s basic courtesy.

Ask Luxembourg How hard is the Accounting and Audit degree at Uni of Lux?

Hello, I was thinking of doing my masters at Uni Lu for Accounting and Audit but I am currently taking some accounting classes for my Business Administration bachelor and I can say that I find the subject extremely difficult.

I am not good at math thats why finance and economics is out of the question but now even accounting seems too hard.

I will try my best but I was wondering how hard Uni Lu is, what are the chances of failing and if I should pursue this degree despite the hardships. Thank you.

Shopping, Food & Restaurants Looking to buy a Sony Xperia phone near Esch/Belval (or French border) – Physical stores?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to buy a Sony mobile phone. I live on the French side of the border but daily travel to the Esch-sur-Alzette / Belval area.

I've searched around local electronics shops like MediaMarkt (Belval Plaza) and HiFi International but noticed they don’t seem to stock Sony smartphones physically on shelves.

Does anyone know of a physical boutique or retailer in the South of Luxembourg or just across the border in France that actually has Sony phones on display?

If physical stores are a dead-end, what online retailers do you recommend for reliable delivery and returns in the border region? Thanks!

Ask Luxembourg Unsure about VAT registration in context of B2B non-EU service provision

Hi there!

I recently received my business permit and have started working in a self-employed capacity with a sole client located in the US.

I provide consulting services to them, so this falls under B2B non-EU service provision.

Now I've been meaning to register for VAT, until I did some further digging and found that this payment from my client seems to be VAT exempt, as they are located outside of the EU. However, I cannot properly determine whether I still need to register for VAT and declare my VAT contributions as 0€ or if I don't even need to register at all, since I won't have to pay VAT.

Does anybody have experience with this and could clear it up for me?

I've already asked the AED and they simply told me that they cannot offer me any financial advice, so I'm a little lost.

Thanks in advance!

News & Discussion Monthly thread on good service provider experiences

Hi everyone,

I recently had another frustrating experience with poor service from a provider. Even as a „local“ who has lived here almost my entire life, I still struggle to find reliable handymen or service providers in certain sectors.

While it makes sense to flag bad providers, I think it could also be valuable to highlight the good ones. That way, people have a clear choice when they need a service. So, what do you think about creating a monthly thread to share positive experiences with service providers, i.e. those who did a great job and deserve recognition?

Would this be something this sub could be interested in and would the mods allow this? I think it could be a good idea because, while flagging bad providers helps us avoid them, it doesn’t tell us who to choose instead. Highlighting the good ones might be a more constructive approach, and I don‘t think I am the only one having this issue.

I keep seeing conflicting information about the English word "rose" translated into Luxembourgish. Is it "opgestan", “rous”, or something completely different? What is the difference between these terms?
Thank you in advance!

Ask Luxembourg 125cc motorbike practice

Hi, I am considering buying a 125cc motorbike.
I have the basic A1 licence, but as I have never ridden a bike before, I would like to get some lessons and practice first. I don’t want to put myself or anyone else in danger.
Do you have any recommendations for driving schools or instructors in Luxembourg City?

Employers can post comments and jobseekers can reply to those comments with their profiles.

If you are OP, think about putting something like JOB OFFER or JOB AVAILABLE: before your comment if you are offering. Put LOOKING: in front of your comment if you are seeking / looking for employment

Ask Luxembourg Speech-language pathologist or occupational therapist who specializes in infant feeding

Hello fellow Luxembourgers,

As the title says, do you happen to know anyone in this country who specializes in infant feeding issues (solids mainly)?
We suspect our issues are psychological, but we have a useless pediatrician who we likely will replace to rule out medical issues, so in case you know someone who specializes in infant feeding issues I would highly appreciate it. Our baby is 8 mo. Thank you.

Still new to astrophotography. This was my first proper attempt at capturing the night sky. The weather wasn't ideal but the skies were still amazing to experience.
