Alive doesn't mean unharmed. He could be hooked up to a machine that breathes for him.

I've never understood why people who survive terrible accidents are considered "lucky"

There are 8 billion people on this very planet right this moment who were not involved in that crash. I'd say any one of them was luckier than he was in that instant.

He was lucky to survive the accident. How is that hard to understand? I wouldn’t say he was unlucky he was in the accident based on the apparent condition of his tires. He was lucky he wasn’t in an accident sooner.

Anyone not with in 500 meters of the accident didn’t need any luck at all not to be in that accident. Maybe the vehicles immediately around him were lucky.

He's less lucky than the 8 billion people who weren't involved in that accident.

It's a super easy concept to understand.

I'll break it down for you:

There are roughly 8,000,000,000 people on Earth. (It's actually more than that but I'll simplify it here.)

7,999,999,999 were not involved in the accident shown above. They are luckier than the 1 person who was involved.
