Guyana’s Football scene (National/Local)
With all the World Cup craze that’s been going on I decided to look into what the football (soccer to the Americans) world was like in Guyana. Admittedly, I was never into the sport but it’s somewhat growing on me. Earlier today I check out the GFF website and was a little disappointed with how little information there was on there. It mentioned an Elite League but no information regarding the clubs like players or coaches biographies, stadiums etc. No merch store or schedules, just outdated information.
So what’s the support like for the local and national team? Does anyone really care about it or is Guyana more cricket focused? Are the players Guyanese born or imports?

What did the 1953 Jagan government actually do in terms of nationalisation efforts?
Reposting because it got removed by Reddit's filters.
I have Indo Guyanese relatives.
My understanding is that, when Cheddi Jagan formed a PPP majority government in 1953, within a month the British armed forces deposed them.
At this point, were the government actually planning to nationalise key industries dominated by foreign-owned companies, like the Bookers Sugar Estate Ltd company, or were they seeking to form new labour unions?
In https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/oct/30/1953-britain-guyana for instance, it suggests that they incited strike action among sugar plantation workers, that they had repealed an “undesirable publications” law (“which banned everything from Paul Robeson records to radical trade union periodicals”), and another law that prohibited West Indian leftists from entering the country, and that they hadn't exactly endeared themselves to Britain by refusing to send representatives to Queen Elizabeth II's coronation.
It also says that the PPP-led government were floating legislation that “would have forced recognition of any union winning majority support from workers”, which I suppose would have allowed plantation workers, for instance, to oust employer-dominated unions and elect their own unions.
I appreciate my Indo Guyanese relatives saying "socialism is bad", but this doesn't really seem like socialism to me? It seems to me that the Jagan government of 1953 were making some reforms that weren't even all that radical, yet it still spooked foreign investors, which spurred the British government to take action.
How radical would you say their reforms were?

Curious to know what states / countries Guyanese people live at nowadays
Aside from the motherland itself, as of right now I know Guyanese people reside within Canada, NY, NJ, PA, Florida, Maryland, Texas, London.. etc etc. Im curious to know if anybody lives in not so common states or countries where you’d come across someone Guyanese & if so whats it like?

Rent prices in Guyana are SKY HIGH!
Oh man, where do I begin? You all know where I’m going with this. Over the past few months, rent prices have been soaring and it’s only getting higher... You can now find unfurnished 1 bedroom apartments for almost $200k… which is absurd compared to other countries in South America. Even though Cubans and Venezuelans are coming to Guyana and a lot of them are renting, I still really don’t see where the exploitation is coming from. A lot of landlords and landladies are overseas and are renting their properties here for enormous prices. Makes me wonder, maybe I should leave and do the same too?
What sense does that make tho? Guyanese living here, even if you make 300k-400k a month, you can barely live comfortably and save while building something of your own.
When it comes to land, it’s so difficult to get as well. I’ve been thinking maybe when they launch any new housing programs, I could simply just sign up for it and pitch properly that I could still use their service but just need my land? What do you think?
I’ve seen people applying and getting though within 6 months and being on NewsRoom…

Discussion Taiwanese-American visiting Georgetown late August, anyone interested in meeting up to chat about Tech, oil, geopolitics, etc?
hey /r/guyana!
My friend and I (both from the US) will be traveling through Georgetown for a day or two during the back half of August— wondering if anybody might be interested in meeting up?
We'd love to learn more about life in Guyana, for example about how the oil boom has changed things (or not).
If you look in my post history you'll see I've done this sort of meetup in a bunch of other places (ex. Iraq, Uzbekistan, etc.) with good results.
More about my friend and me:
- We're both interested in geopolitics/history. I'm Taiwanese-American and my friend is half Chinese-American, so we're especially intrigued by things like the Chinese diaspora presence in Guyana + China-Guyana relations as well.
- We both work in software and can chat about tech/business/startups if you're interested.
- We've both traveled to a bunch of "off the beaten path" countries, ex. Libya, eSwatini, etc. and are happy to share our travel experiences.
Please DM me if you're interested in meeting up... thank you!

Discussion Planning to move out to another location or moving out of Guyana. Getting too Expensive to live here
I lived in Guyana for my whole life , my family forced to leave Guyana twice before due to Terrible Economy in the past but in the end they settled in Guyana for decades . And with the boom of oil ,Guyana is gaining alot of benefits but there are some downsides to everything. Recently everything is getting too expensive and there are many foreign investors and landowners investing into commercials . Guyana has about 50% of Guyanese living in the poverty line and it will increase . Rent , goods , food , electronics etc are getting expensive , it is as much or even more than in Canada and USA New York. Living here has became worst for me as i predict i will not be able to keep up with the rising cost, i already signed up for land to buy but the time is ticking for me as renting is getting too much for me and lands getting bought out. Got notify they are selling the land and place i am renting. I have about less than a yr left to move out . I am looking for place to rent but the rents are too high.
Solution : is find new job/ way to earn more money or move out and i am looking at moving out from Guyana as the solution. Jobs are oversaturated by migrant workers in the low and middle level so wages gotten too low for Guyanese to keep up. I am thinking of moving out to some country in Asia . Learn the language . I don't have anyone else here, parents gone , relatives are in Canada but will not help . My future is uncertain here. I don't feel like i belong here anymore.

Poll Is littering a part of Guyanese culture?
Little rant:
This is not to deter responsibility from the central government and respective municipalities, as regular garbage collection is severely lacking in this country and nobody prioritizes upkeep with all these new “developments”.
Despite this, I’ve seen it with my own eyes how Guyanese will quite literally throw their own rubbish on the ground while not even actively looking for a waste bin (ignoring that those need better maintenance). I remember calling out a child on it one time at the seawall, I told them that they should put the empty wrapper in the rubbish bin and not shy it on the ground, and the mother yelled at me for “minding she children”, the audacity to actively want your child to live stink and duty without civil sense, Guyanese seem to have it backwards!

J’aimerai savoir quel « rituel » j’ai « subit » ?
Ça a duré quelques longues secondes. Je ne me sentait pas spécialement différente après mais pas mal non plus. Suite à ça il m’a re parlé de couture, m’a encouragé et il a souhaité que dieu nous bénisse.
Est-ce que quelqu’un sait ce que cela signifie ?
Merci d’avance !

Help Me Identify this Fruit!
I picked two up in the Lenora night market this weekend, but I don’t remember the name the lady called it. It was the weirdest shaped fruit I’ve ever seen and all of them were like that! it tasted delightful though. Skin like a peach with orange flesh made of tiny segments kind of like jackfruit and white 1/2cm seeds in certain clusters of segments.
thanks a bunch!
