Hey all! I've slowly started amassing an omnibus collection over the past few years. I currently have 20 (11 DC and 9 Marvel), and I was looking for my next DC pick.
I've narrowed down my options either to the New 52 Earth 2 Omnibus Vol. 1, or the DC Death Metal Omnibus. I know these are two very different books from two different eras that set out to do 2 different things:
Earth 2 is essentially an Elseworld book, and from what I gather is the closest thing to a JSA book in the New 52. It's a long form series that covers an entire universe's story, not just one or two heroes. Assuming eventually a Vol. 2 of this omnibus is eventually released, there will be an entire continuity collected from start to finish. Why buy the omnibus? Trades are out of print and hard to find and I've heard good things about this run.
Death Metal is kind of the opposite. Instead of one long form self contained story, it's a single event, with input and tie-ins from countless different stories. Why buy the Omnibus instead of just the paperback/hc of the main mini? Because Death Metal is in a lot of ways the biggest continuity shakeup in DC since the New 52, and getting the full context of the story could add depth (I also LOVE the Infinite Frontier event (and era) that spawned directly from Death Metal, and I love Snyder's work (I have both of his New 52 Batman Omnis, and Absolute Batman is obviously incredible)).
What do you guys recommend? Have any of you gotten either of these? If so, did you like them? Which would you pick? Is the Death Metal Omni a waste of time and just the main event is needed, tie-ins fine to be ignored? Is Earth-2 a good enough series to invest in? Any input from any angle is appreciated, thanks!
