Last one in my APL preview series: Alashkert

A small note first: I wrote this before the second leg against Yelimay. So the part where I said their season could depend on whether they stay in Europe has already become very relevant after that crazy game.

Alashkert were probably the most settled team in the league last season. Vahe Gevorgyan kept a very consistent starting XI, got them into Europe in his first year and was voted Coach of the Year. They have also kept their two main attacking players (yet): Momo Touré and Karen Nalbandyan.

Nalbandyan is probably the most interesting part of this team for me. Fourteen league goals from an Armenian attacking midfielder is a huge return, and keeping him may be Alashkert’s most important piece of business this summer.

I have them finishing 5th, just behind Urartu, although this is probably the prediction I’m least confident about. Alashkert finished above them last season, beat them twice and have more continuity. But the squad is not very deep, and now they definitely have more European matches (at least 2) to fit around the start of the league season.

Fantasy-wise, Nalbandyan at 12.0m and Touré at 11.0m are the obvious premium options. Farayola at 9.0m might be the more interesting value pick after seven assists last season.

This will probably be the final club preview for now. Information on the other teams and their current squads are extremely limited, and collecting even basic squad and player data becomes very difficult (a real struggle for fantasy football), so I would rather stop here than pretend I know enough to write useful previews :)

APL Next up in my APL club previews: Urartu

I have a bit of a soft spot for this Urartu team.

Under Robert Arzumanyan, they actually try to play passing football and are usually pleasant to watch. More importantly, they do it with a lot of Armenian players, including young ones who are given real minutes and responsibility. That alone makes them one of the more interesting teams to follow this season.

The question is whether they can finally turn the nice football into better results against the top teams. Last season they were very reliable against the clubs below them, but struggled badly against Noah, Ararat-Armenia, Pyunik and Alashkert.

I have them finishing 4th this time (no big reasoning, just a wish). The team is mostly stable, Bruno Michel is still there, and they will not have European matches to distract them. Knowing Urartu’s history in Europe, that might honestly be for the best, as every time they qualify, it somehow ends in disaster.

Fantasy-wise, Michel is obviously the main name, but Margaryan and Piloyan also look interesting because they can contribute going forward.

Next club in the APL preview series: Pyunik

After Ararat-Armenia and Noah, I wrote the next preview on Pyunik.

I have them finishing 3rd again. Their defence was the best in the league last season and should remain their biggest strength, but replacing Javi Moreno will be difficult. He was very important creatively, and Pyunik were already not the most productive attacking team.

Artak Oseyan factor is probably the biggest reason to still trust them. Pyunik won five matches 1–0 last season, while ten of their 17 victories came by a single goal. Under Oseyan, they took 51 points from 25 matches and kept 13 clean sheets. It is not always exciting football, but he has built a team that is extremely difficult to beat and knows how to protect a narrow lead.

The part I’m most curious about is the midfield. I expect Karlen Hovhannisyan to have a breakthrough season, and a central midfield built around him and Hovhannes Harutyunyan could be really exciting. There is plenty of quality there, but the big question is whether Pyunik can create and score enough to properly challenge Noah and Ararat-Armenia.

I also added the early Fantasy prices. Their defenders look like obvious options, while the attacking players are much harder to judge at this stage (besides Yansane).

Where do you see Pyunik finishing?

APL Next up in my APL club previews: Noah

After Ararat-Armenia, the next preview is about Noah.

They finished four points behind the champions last season, but had the best attack, best defence and by far the best goal difference in the league. Their form after the European league phase was especially ridiculous: 32 points from the final 12 matches, with 36 goals scored and only five conceded.

I’m predicting Noah to finish 1st this time, and by a big margin. They still have the deepest squad in Armenia, Perkovic has finally had a proper preseason, and they have brought in several interesting players. I hope that Noah can enter the group phase of UECL again (though all depends on a draw), but even with that their squad is deep enough to cover 2 competitions, especially if Ararat-Armenia also enters Europe (they are less ready to compete in 2 fronts).

I also added the full early Fantasy price list and my current top three Noah picks. They are probably the hardest club to choose from, as you never know who is going to play. There is a good chance Doumbia would be their main striker in APL, while the signings Lazetic/Gonzalez would play in UECL.

APL Starting my 2026/27 APL previews with Ararat-Armenia

With the new season getting closer, I decided to write a few club-by-club previews, starting with Ararat-Armenia.

I looked at what has changed since last season, their transfers, key players, and what we might expect from them in 2026/27. I also included an early look at their possible Fantasy assets and prices.

As I mentioned here before, I’ve also been working on Fantasy Football for APL Games, and I’m happy to finally confirm that it will be available for the 2026/27 season - the first Fantasy game for Armenian club football.

For Ararat-Armenia, I’m predicting a 2nd-place finish. They were the most consistent team in the league last season, but they are rebuilding important parts of the squad, and a longer European run (I hope they will qualify after their strong start) could make the domestic season more difficult like it happened to Noah.

What do you think? Where do you expect Ararat-Armenia to finish, and how do the early Fantasy prices look to you? Anyone clearly too expensive or too cheap?

Can anyone explain training in Armenia?

Whether for the national team or the club teams, what style of training do they show the players? Are there coaches and trainers that come from Europe to show them? Do the players watch tape to understand the game more? I’m genuinely curious how the team hasn’t made any progress the way they should when in basketball a country like South Sudan managed to reach the Olympics and they are a brand new country to basketball? Is it internal issues in the federation that prevent it? How many practices do they have a day and do they incorporate weight training?
