Hi everyone,
I recently moved into my first apartment, so I’ve been using Marketplace to find furniture and other things I need. Up until now, everyone I’ve dealt with in Sudbury has been amazing.
Yesterday, I bought a robot vacuum. Looking back, there was only one photo, no video, and I had a bad feeling about it, but I ignored it.
When I got home, I found the vacuum was filthy. It was full of dog hair, and the dust bin hadn’t even been emptied. After cleaning it, I realized the main brush wasn’t spinning, and it barely picked up any dirt. Instead of vacuuming, it just pushed everything around.
I messaged the seller right away, sent videos showing the problem, and politely asked if I could return it for a refund since it clearly wasn’t working as advertised. At first, she apologized and told us it had been her son’s vacuum. She said he had bought an off-brand replacement brush, (probably because the original one was broken). The problem is that the replacement brush she gave us is way too long for that vacuum, so it doesn’t even fit properly.
After that, her attitude completely changed. She started insinuating that we must have broken the vacuum within an hour of buying it. After only a few messages, she blocked me on Marketplace.
Since she blocked me, we contacted her by text using the phone number we had sent the e-transfer to. We explained that we only wanted to return it because we couldn’t afford to lose that money. Instead of trying to help, she told us we had to prove it was already broken before we bought it, even though I had taken photos and videos the Instant I got home and before I even tried to cleaned or used the vacuum. She also told us to use our savings to buy a new brush. I was honestly shocked. She was rude, dismissive, and almost seemed to enjoy the situation. At that point, it felt like she knew exactly what she was doing.
I know it’s partly my fault for not testing it before buying, but I also believe sellers should be honest about what they’re selling. In the end, after an uncomfortable face-to-face interaction with her and the person who was with her Trying to gaslight me, I decided to leave the vacuum at her front door and leave.
Please be careful when buying on Marketplace. I hope sharing this helps someone avoid making the same mistake I did. People like this are ugly on the inside and honestly, in her case, the outside matches too.
