Megathread Northern Ontario Wildfire Donations

Hello, Ontario. As you are aware, there is currently a very severe fire affecting Northern Ontario.

There are a number of evacuation orders, and a number of people have had to evacuate with little to no notice. Many of them have been evacuated to Thunder Bay, and are in need of supplies.

Here are some ways to help our fellow Ontarians:

  • Thunder Bay Community Pasture are helping livestock owners get their animals to safety in the area. If you or someone you know needs help saving livestock, please contact them. They accept cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and with Murillo facility smaller livestock like turkeys and chickens. They stress that they need to be contacted first before you show up with livestock.
  • Northern Reach Network are seeking emergency temporary animal foster homes, and they are assisting with pets that have been left behind in the affected communities.
  • Both the Nokiiwin Tribal Council at 384 Fort William Road and the Superior Inn at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay are accepting donations for evacuees. They've posted that they're in dire need of baby and toddler supplies (especially diapers and formula) and cat and dog food and supplies.

If you are aware of more organizations supporting the community, please let us know.

Discussion Is anyone else getting sick and tired of Americans complaining about the wild fires?

3.8k Upvotes

Every other post I see is Americans saying 'i can't breathe with all this smoke from the CANADIAN wild fires', 'it smells awful because of the CANADIAN wildfires'. I'm living through it too and I understand. But the emphasis put on Canada, so they can finally point their little grimey fingers at something.

Like pls Kyle, there's people's homes and livelihoods being burned down. Endangered species are losing their already low population. Let's have a little respect 🤏

Politics Doug Ford thinks you're stupid

1.4k Upvotes

He thinks you will look at his propaganda ads with the Protect Ontario logo and believe that since he has managed to have his team slap together some stats on whatever less-than-bare-minimum he has allowed to occur to enable forest fire management and fighting, and that you will not see all around you that it is NOT ENOUGH and we are in a crisis situation.

He has not addressed us with whatever his new plan is, acknowledged the suffering and losses up north, the health impacts now and down the road. He is on vacation while the province burns, stepping out only to shill for a company that isn't Canadian, to promote a day to "help" the kids whose families he has taken from time and time again, and who have very little opportunity to thrive in this wrecked province.

Time to act, time to spam him, time to spam your MPPs, join the protests, stop being apathetic, and forevermore - VOTE.

Discussion I'm a professor of wildfire management: AMA about smoke and fires

Hi r/Ontario! My name is Eric and I'm an Associate Professor of Disaster and Emergency Management at York University, where I specialize in wildfire management. I'll be here around 1pm Eastern to answer questions you might have about the fires, about the smoke, about how to stay safe(r), and anything else that comes to mind. I'm also going to be in r/Toronto at the same time, so if you have specific questions about the GTA, you can ask there.

Looking forward to your questions and chatting!

Edit: Wowza, you folks can ask a lot of good questions :p. I'm going to let it close as scheduled at 5pm, but I'm going to keep trying to answer questions over the coming days... and will do this again in the future if there's interest! Please be patient with me as I try to catch up on so many good questions, and feel free to reach out if there's ever anything I can do to support you or your communities (my email is easy to find on the York website).

Discussion Is there any discussion about declaring a state of emergency due to air quality?

I just got in from walking the dog. My eyes are stinging and I can feel the phlegm buildup in my lungs. I fear for people who have to work outside. I know most employers will not cancel work because of the cost. Furthermore, there are sporting events and outdoor concerts scheduled for today which will not be cancelled.

Surely, someone in the government of Ontario must be thinking about the health consequences and the long term cost to our health care system.

Right?

Housing Reminder to replace filters.

I'm talking about your cars air filter, cabin air filter, and your furnace filters.

Once this stuff settles, replace them they'll be a lil beat up.

For those without central air, I'd recommend looking up Corsi-Rosenthal box fans.

Cheap, effective.

All the best to you all.

Question Need help finding a reliable vet for our dog

Upvotes

I'm reaching out because we're feeling overwhelmed and hoping someone here has recommendations.

Our senior Labrador has been diagnosed with *jaundice, and we've just found out he has a tumour on his liver. We don't yet know if it's cancerous, and we're looking for a reliable veterinary hospital or specialist in Ontario* that can perform the necessary testing *as soon as possible

If anyone has experience with veterinary oncology, internal medicine, liver biopsies, or diagnostic imaging, we'd really appreciate hearing where you went and how your experience was. We're willing to travel anywhere in Ontario if it means getting him seen quickly and receiving excellent care.

Any recommendations, advice, or even things you wish you had known during this process would mean so much to us.

Employment A reminder that Ontario law gives you the right to refuse unsafe work!!

If your job requires you to be excessively in this air and you are not an emergency responder you most likely have the right to refuse unsafe work. It will involve going to your health and safety committee or supervisor depending on your company structure but it's better than this!

Discussion Toronto outdoor workers: are you still being asked to work today?

Hi everyone, this is Estella with the Toronto Star. I'm working on a story about whether Toronto outdoor workers are still required to work today and, if so, whether they are being provided with masks.

Toronto is currently ranked second for most polluted air in the world on IQAir. Environment Canada urges people to limit time spent outdoors, or use a “well-constructed” respirator mask if outside.

If you're affected, please send me a DM or leave a comment here. Thank you, and take care, everyone.

Discussion Air conditioning is now absolutely an necessity

For the last decade I’ve seen many calls to arms to set limits on indoor temperatures and summer temperatures rise. These extended smoke events are making even clearer to me that central air is now a necessity to keep air quality safe. or at least tolerable at night when resting.

so whats to be done ?
